Meiji Shrine (明治神宮 Meiji Jingū?), located in Shibuya, Tokyo, is the Shinto shrine that is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shōken.[1] When Emperor Meiji died in 1912 and Empress Shōken in 1914, the Japanese people wished to pay their respects to the two influential Japanese figures. It was for this reason that Meiji Shrine was constructed and their souls enshrined on November 1, 1920.[2]

After the emperor's death in 1912, the Japanese Diet passed a resolution to commemorate his role in the Meiji Restoration. An iris garden in an area of Tokyo where Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken had been known to visit was chosen as the building's location. Construction began in 1915, and the shrine was built in the traditional Nagarezukuri style and is made up primarily of Japanese cypress and copper. It was formally dedicated in 1920, completed in 1921, and its grounds officially finished by 1926.[3]

The original building was destroyed during the Tokyo air raids of World War II. The present iteration of the shrine was funded through a public fund raising effort and completed in October, 1958.[4]

Meiji Shrine was brought into the flow of current events with the 2009 visit of United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. After arriving in Tokyo on her first foreign trip representing the newly elected President Barack Obama, she made her way to this shrine in advance of meetings with Japan's leaders to show her "respect toward history and the culture of Japan." [5]

Meiji Shrine is located in a forest that covers an area of 700,000 square-meters (about 175 acres). This area is covered by an evergreen forest that consists of 120,000 trees of 365 different species, which were donated by people from all parts of Japan when the shrine was established. The forest is visited by many people both as a spiritual home of the people and as a recreation and relaxation area in the center of Tokyo.[2] The shrine itself is comprised of two major areas:

[edit]Naien

The Naien is the inner precinct, which is centered on the shrine buildings and includes a treasure museum that houses articles of the Emperor and Empress. The treasure museum is built in the Azekurazukuri style.

[edit]Gaien

The Gaien is the outer precinct, which includes the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery that houses a collection of 80 large murals illustrative of the events in the lives of the Emperor and his consort. It also includes a variety of sports facilities, including the National Stadium, and is seen as the center of Japanese sports. It also includes the Meiji Memorial Hall, which was originally used for governmental meetings, including discussions surrounding the drafting of the Meiji Constitution in the late 19th century. Today it is used for Shinto weddings.

Alex had a unique approach to the production of his design folio work. Alex was constantly drawing. He spent most of his classtime just drawing, even when he was supposed to be doing something else. He needed to draw to think. So what you see here isn't necessarily pretty but this folio is stuffed with ideas. Alex's approach demonstrates precisely and accurately the method of idea generation and refinement promoted by the department. Note the large number of drawings on eachpage. this allows the student to easily cross reference and tag from one idea to the next. Extensive annotation also helps to reveal design thinking and comments should always be relevant and refer back to the specification. It is clear that Alex has a thorough understanding of the more technical aspects of the course and he repeatedly suggests ways in which his concepts might be made.

Alex went on to do very well at Higher Product Design. Some of his work also features on this site. He's now studying maths at Warwick University.

This is a KD1JV design. A simple voltage indicator for QRP radios. It could be a lot smaller, but I had this altoids tin and wanted to use it. I used a sort of ugly style, along with a single Manhattan pad for the 'hot' part of the circuit. There's a simpler version of this that uses two LEDs and no trimpots that a german guy designed. Steve Weber suggests using fixed-value resistors, and since I am using 1% tolerance components, I could have. The adjustment is funny because the upper voltage 'knee' has a sort of 'off-center' behavior when you're raising the voltage to find it. It tends to cling to a certain color, then snap to both LEDs lit a few tenths of a volt above and below the 'knee.'

The lower voltage cutoff point, however, is smooth and continuous with the dimming and extinguishing of the green side of the LED fading into red. As simple as this is, I had a hard time making it work, and this is the 3rd iteration of it I had built before it functioned right.

The department has been building up a library of design related reference books over the last few years. Pupils are encouraged to make use of these books on a regular basis. The photographs here demonstrate the tremendous wealth of content contained therein.

The sequence has been shot in such a way that the cover of the book is shown first and a few sample pages are included to give the student an idea of the content the book contains. Pupils may then approach staff and request a short term loan.

Overall, this single aircraft design that is ready for building and going into serial production absolutely obliterates Lockheed's SR-72 (Mach 5) by DOUBLE the margins and a fraction of the costs, and BOOM, Virgin Galactic, etc.

Sure it can economically cruise at Mach 3-4.5 supersonically at under 50% throttle as well, but 7,000-8,000 NM Range at Mach 10 at over 100,000ft altitude and normalized hypersonic flight along with 6,000F thermal resistence.

The Glasgow subway again!. I originally intended a shot where the trains were blurred by their movement but I didn't set a slow enough shutter speed so I faked it in photoshop. One of the comments referring to a more abstracted version inspired this: one half was duplicted and flipped to make a more symmetrical image. The perspective was dragged out a bit too.

In addition to the duplicate and flip and the perspective tweak, this version has been slightly desaturated and and a multiply self-blend applied for extra contrast.

Test album done with a camera and a technology that inspired people over the past one or two years. The Fuji X100s is said to be the newest iteration of Fuji X technology (resolved AF, resolved operation speed, etc…), sporting the newest X-Trans sensor. Prior to shooting I have read Zach Arias’ article on the camera and my friend Charles Lanteigne’s article as well.

After thorough shooting, I have concluded that this camera and the fujifilm brand caters to people who love shooting with fujifilm film rolls and hate retouching their images.

The Fuji X100s does a few of things right. Experiencing such pleasures is quite motivating to keep using that camera. Makes me wish other cameras had them.

- Images out of camera: They are gorgeous, film-like and very pleasing as opposed to the standard AWB digital look of other cameras. The reason why I believe a lot of people shoot film is that the colors of film don’t require must retouching to be beautiful. So does the images from the X100s. As such, you spend less time in front of the computer and more time shooting.

- Style: The camera is gorgeously retro and operates “kinda” well.

- Provides film-style controls where shutter and aperture are assigned to dial and lens.

- Dat ND filter makes shooting in sunlight enjoyable

- Digital publishing: The images are gorgeous on any digital screen.

From there, it falls apart…

- Images are unusable in conventional ways of digital processing (Lightroom in particular handles badly the files). Files stand up horrible when seen up close. While many of my fujifilm owner friends are trying to convince me to play around with alternative ways of processing, I am not ready to give up my workflow for a more complicated and time consuming one. This just break the camera for me.

- AF is reliable 1/3 of the time, often missing its target

- Hybrid viewfinder mechanism gets stuck in the middle of switching

- The EVF is disgustingly slow and hard to use (coming from the OMD and the NEX-6), so I end up using just the optical which is nice

- Navigating the laggy Fujifilm UI is a frustrating mess

- The system needs to drop out of shooting mode to reboot into preview mode

- In preview mode, you need to enter a “burst” folder in order to view all the burst shots you’ve shot.

- It’s really hard to check to see if your image is in focus or is sharp

- The list goes on and on…

In the end, using the camera is an exercice in patience and frustration for a digital camera user providing files that aren’t optimal for post-processing and an unreliable operation that frustrates more than rewards. Yet with a film approach, the process could turn into a happy ending thx to controls that make the camera operate on a similar path as film. The fact that the camera produces gorgeous out of camera images saves a whole lot of computer time for the people who don’t know much about digital post-processing.

Changed the pedals, swapped grips (small-size ergons with tiny bar ends to large-size ergons with no bar ends plus add-on bar ends) and did a bit of rivendell styling on the bar ends.

I replaced the rear smart sam tire with a mondial. Going to take the smart sam home and put it on the front of my hamilton, with the other mondial in the back. This way both bikes will have "matching" tires. Matching with each other, that is.

I decided to return the brooks cambium that I tried out. I did a 30 mile ride on it and got the worst case of saddle sore I ever had. The thing looked totally gorgeous, but unfortunately I don't get to look at it while I'm riding. I decided that my $30 charge spoon saddle is a better deal, even if I have to replace it every year. (5 spoon saddles for the price of 1 cambium.)

I removed the large basket off the front to take that home. I was planning on buying a 2nd basket, but riv is out of stock. Since I don't need a basket on a bike when I'm not riding it, I'm taking it home. I'll get another basked next time I'm in SF.

Speaking of baskets from rivendell, if you're going to get one, go ahead and get the "huge". I have the smaller one, and realized it's too small. If you're going to be a dork and have a basked on your bike, go all in. Get the huge. It's just way more useful.

The department has been building up a library of design related reference books over the last few years. Pupils are encouraged to make use of these books on a regular basis. The photographs here demonstrate the tremendous wealth of content contained therein.
