Longtime Vicenza Military Community member and World War II veteran, U.S. Army Col. Myron Murley (retired) is presented with the French National Order of the Legion of Honor Medal in a ceremony July 25 at his retirement home in northwest Italy. Murley participated in the liberation of France during the Second World War and was a founding member of VFW Post 8862 in Vicenza in the 1990s.

Members of the 82nd Sustainment Brigade remembered Black History Month with stories, poems and song on Feb. 20. Performers from the unit reenacted great figures from Black history at the Pope Theater, including this reenactment of Claudia Colvin, the first black woman to refuse to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama city bus nearly nine months before Rosa Parks, who was considered the mother of the civil rights movement.

In 1960, the 10'6" 500# replica of an infantryman was designed and sculpted by Pfc. Manfred Bass and assisted by Pfc. Karl H. Van Krog, under the direction of Maj. Gen. Paul L. Freeman Jr., then the commandant of the U.S. Army Infantry School. The model was an officer candidate named Eugene J. Wyles.
It was named “The Infantryman” — simple enough — and installed on Eubanks Field, US Army Fort Benning
In 1964 it got a new location, Infantry Hall, and a new name, “Follow Me,” after the motto of the Infantry.

A shot put competitor participates in the Mid-Carolina Senior Games, May 6, at Hercules Fitness Center. The games, held annually, promote physical fitness and strong mental health for seniors ages 50 and above. Game events include skills such as shot put, softball throw, high jump, basketball, poetry, pottery and woodworking. Seniors who medal at the Mid-Carolina Senior Games qualify for the North Carolina Senior Games state finals, held each fall in Raleigh, North Carolina, and for the Senior Olympics, held every two years.
