ESA’s ultra-precise deep-space navigation technique – Delta-DOR – tells us where spacecraft are, accurate to within a few hundred metres, even at a distance of 100 000 000 km.

In order to navigate a spacecraft around our Solar System we have to know how far away it is, how fast it is travelling and in what direction. Each of these steps are explained in this new infographic, "How not to lose a spacecraft".

New research using a decade of data from ESA’s Mars Express has found clear signs of the complex martian atmosphere acting as a single, interconnected system, with processes occurring at low and mid levels significantly affecting those seen higher up.

My reworking of the brilliant Land Art Generator images 'Suface Area Required To Power The World' with one alternative energy source added :)

Originals are here:

www.landartgenerator.org/blagi/archives/127

===========

here's my maths (probably wrong, please correct me if so)

total world energy needs per year:

198,721,800,000,000 kwH

average energy output of a human per hour

0.1 KW per human (100 watts)

365 days at 24 hours a day = 8760 energy hours per year per human

0.1 KW x 8760 hours = 876 KWh energy generated per human per year

world energy needs divided by human supply

198,721,800,000,000 / 876 = 226,851,369,863 humans required

Human body occupies

2m x 1m = 2square metres

assuming machinery and spacing between human batteries

4m x 2m = 8 square metres

requires

1, 814,810,958,904 metres for all human batteries

1.8 trillion square metres

or

18,148,810,958 = 18 billion square kilometres

world land surface area is:

148,940,000 square kilometres (wikipedia)

so would require 221 billion humans to be stacked 121 rows high across the entire land surface of the earth.

very dystopian!

As seen on the side of the shuttle whisking us back to Phuket airport. No eatin', no drinkin', no fuckin'!

It's either that or no giving birth. Which I can TOTALLY understand them having a problem with. That's a lot messier than eating fruit.

What started out as a google search out of curiosity, soon turned into a weekend project of researching all the phones that I've owned so far and distilling that information into this info graphic. As a technophile, I get a kick out of such things. Hope you do too :)

Here's a mountain of data congealed into a single infographic showing how population counts have impacted how much might a constituent wields in Congress. 100 years of it. So drag your eyeballs over the historic ups and downs and soak up the map and sparkline goodness. Then command your brain to turn this information into knowledge, then use that knowledge to feed wisdom.

WOW! Back on January 14th I posted my Doctor Who Inforgraphic. It chugged along for a while, racking up a hundred or so views every day. Then nerdist.com saw it and blogged it and KAPOW!! They told two blogs, and they told two blogs, and so on and so on until it got a whopping 39,777 views on February 9th! Needless to say that's a record for me, and one that'll probably never be broken. This is my fifteen minutes of internet fame.

It's weird thinking about how many people are looking at my little drawing right now. In fact I feel a little naked.

The only down side is that this is an old version. I've revised it since then, incorporating (most) everyone's corrections and suggestions.

Thanks to everyone for stopping by and commenting.

Greater Manchester Police is urging residents to avoid the nightmare of being burgled remembering to leave a light on.

Research involving interviews with convicted burglars supports this simple tactic as an effective deterrent to thieves. It is also cheap and environmentally friendly as leaving a low-energy lightbulb on mid- afternoon to late evening when you are out can cost less than a few pence a day.

What does the DNA of a nation look like?

This is the question I wanted to explore with my visualization of data associated with the UK's National DNA Database, which I built for the July issue of Wired UK.

The final graphic is composed of more than 5 million dots - one for each profile stored in the NDNAD. This graphic was constructed using a custom-written software program that I wrote.
