Impression 3D par Gnieark

When working this image I had no "pre-conceived" idea or plan. I actually was looking for a way to convert it to a IR image but that wasn't working. So while playing around with different blending modes in layers I stumbled across something that got my creative juices flowing. After that I put it through NIK several times, and then through filters in Photoshop some more. And like a good cook I couldn't duplicate this again if you asked me. HA!

But I must give some credit to one of my contacts who inspired the last layer of this, Reid Masons Autumn Image. Reid does some amazing work and I saw that image the other day and was blown away. So while sitting there yesterday working on this image I felt it needed one last layer and so I thought of Reids image and decided to go into the filters to add the brush stroke layer. Thank you for the inspiration Reid.

ISLAND

Vilamendhoo island is on the south-east edge of the South Ari Atoll. This area has some of the best dive sites in the Maldives. The island is a uniform oval shape and as a result quite samey all the way round. It is not the prettiest island we have ever been to, but it does have everything you ever need on a Maldives holiday, and that counts for a lot.....hence this is our third visit here.

DIVING/SNORKELLING

Vilamendhoo has the best dive centre, the best diving and some of the best snorkelling in the Maldives.....no contest! That is the big selling point of this island, there is a huge amount of diving going on here! When we were there the dive centre was being run by Sonja, she is married to Illy a Maldivian divemaster, an amazing couple. Sonja doesn't dive too much now but Illy is a great guy to dive with. They have two or three dive boats going out every day and the dive sites are spectacular, there is even a manta point on the other side of the atoll. I only did ten dives this time but unfortunately managed to format the SD Card that had most of my dive photo's on so not many dive pic's to put in the album for this holiday!

MEALS

The Maldive islands have no agriculture or industry, they have to import everything so it constantly amazes us how they manage to provide us with such a huge variety of great meals. When we are in the Maldives breakfast is always the best meal of the day and on Vilamendhoo it is no exception. We like to get up around 5:00am for coffee then go out for a run around the island while the sun comes up.....a stunning time of the day! Generally we have the beach to ourselves so it's like having your own private island. After the run we will cool off with a bit of snorkelling in the lagoon or out to the drop off. Cooling off is a relative term considering the water here is around 30 degrees all year round! All that gives you a fantastic appetite, hence our love of breakfast. We stayed at the adults only end of the island this year and the views from both sides of their restaurant here are breathtaking. What a start to the day!

WEATHER

Expect it to be hot and sunny. This holiday, like most of our visits to the Maldives, was in late December. Although the wet season used to be over by the end of November the seasons are changing here, as they are in other places around the globe, so if you're unlucky it can still be a bit unsettled in December.

MALDIVES

The climate is perfect this time of year, you just have to put up with a few stray showers. For a totally relaxing beach holiday the temperatures are absolutely perfect in the Maldives, around 30 degrees, day and night. The evenings are slightly balmy.....perfect for the tee shirt, shorts and the 'No News No Shoes' uniform of the Maldives. The water temperature is always around 30 degrees and it is the same 30 metres down, maybe dipping to 28 degrees in their coolest season. This area of the world is just stunning, there is simply nowhere else like it. You have to be prepared to relax here, there is not much to do except snorkelling, diving, reading and sunbathing. But if you can get into that vibe, the Maldives slows you down like no other place on earth.....then you are in chillout heaven!

The history of New Year's Concert

Dr. Clemens Hellberg

Long way of approaching

New Year's Concert 2013 ©

The international popularity of the New Year's Concert gives the impression as if the Strauss reception of the ensemble went back to Johann Strauss I and thus seamlessly to the beginning of the history of the orchestra. In fact, the Philharmonic long ignored this "most Viennese" music that was ever written: Obviously the social advancement they experienced through their Philharmonic concerts them seemed threatened by relationships with the "popular music". This attitude towards the Strauss dynasty changed only gradually. Crucial for rethinking were besides the fact that the members of the unique composer family were enjoying the highest recognition of the great composers such as Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms, several direct encounters with Johann Strauss II giving the orchestra the opportunity the importance of this music and the whole of Europe compelling personality of its creator to get to know.

Johann Strauss and Vienna Philharmonics

Johann Strauss, son

The first meeting immediately brought a premiere: For the in the Great Hall of the Musikverein held Vienna Opera Ball on 22 April 1873 Strauss composed the waltz "Wiener Blut" and directed it "authentically" with the violin in his hand. On 4 November 1873 brought Strauss works of his father and Josef Lanner and the "Blue Danube Waltz" as part of a gala concert organized by the Chinese World Expo Commission to performance, the next meeting there was at the occasion of a soiree in the Court Opera (11 December 1877), in which Strauss the premiere of his "reminiscences of old and new Vienna" conducted, an unfortunately lost potpourri of topics from own or from compositions of his father. On 14 October 1894, the orchestra took part at the gala concert on the occasion of the fifty-year career anniversary of the master, and Strauss thanked with the presentation of a commemorative medal and a telegram: "For the nonce written warmest thanks to the great artists to the famous Philharmonic for both your masterly performance as well for the manifestation of Your sympathy which has given me great joy... Johann Strauss". The next encounter should have tragic consequences. On May 22, 1899, the composer had at the occasion of a performance of "Die Fledermaus" conducted for the first and only time in the Court Opera. By doing so, he got a cold subsequently leading to that pneumonia of which he died on 3 June in 1899.

The Johann Strauss monument in Vienna

Johann Strauss monument

Even after the death of the "King of Waltz" advanced the Philharmonic not immediately to his convinced interpreters. A turning point began to emerge in 1921: At the occasion of the unveiling of the Johann Strauss monument in Vienna's Stadtpark conducted Arthur Nikisch (1855-1922) the waltz "Artist's Life" "on the Beautiful Blue Danube" as well as "Wine, Women and Song", and the example of the world-famous artist apparently made school. The final breakthrough brought the celebrations to mark the 100th birthday of the master (25 October 1925): Felix von Weingartner conducted the "Blue Danube Waltz" in the Philharmonic subscription concerts on 17-18 October and conducted on October 25 a concert, exclusively consisting of works of Strauss.

Clemens Krauss

The real Strauss tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic but established that artist, to this day as perhaps the most important apologist of this music considered: Clemens Krauss (1893-1954). From 1929 to 1933 he conducted at the Salzburg Festival every year a Strauss program and thus anticipating the New Year's Concert.

The first New Year's Concert

New Year's Concert with Clemens Krauss

The origin of this concert falls in the darkest period in the history of Austria and the orchestra. In the midst of barbarism, dictatorship and war, in a phase of constant trepidation for the lives of individual members or their relatives, the Philharmonic on 31 December 1939 put an ambivalent accent: The net income of one the Strauss dynasty dedicated extraordinary concert, conducted by Clemens Krauss, was entirely the Nazi fundraising campaign war winter charity (Kriegswinterhilfswerk) dedicated. In 1941 the Philharmonic Academy "Johann Strauss Concert" was organized on January 1, and in the midst of war by many people as "real Viennese festival of joy" understood but also by the Nazi propaganda in the "Greater German Broadcasting" captured. Clemens Krauss was in charge of the newly created institution until the war ended. During the years 1946 and 1947 was Josef Krips (1902-1974) at the conductor's stand, in 1948 returned Krauss after lifting his two-year Dirigierverbotes (prohibition to conduct an orchestra) by the Allies and headed until 1954 seven other New Year's concerts.

25 New Year's Concerts with Willi Boskovsky

Willi Boskovsky

The unexpected death of Krauss on 16 May 1954 created for the Philharmonic major problems in terms of a successor, and it took several orchestra meetings before just before 1 January 1955 it was decided to entrust with the artistic leadership the concertmaster Willi Boskovsky (1909-1991). The choice proved to be a stroke of luck: Twenty-five times, from 1955 to 1979, Boskovsky conducted this concert and formed it so sustainably that his resignation marked the end of an era - in his camp was that old Austria that outside nostalgic dreams only exists in the magic of Strauss music.

A new chapter in the history of New Year's Concert

Lorin Maazel

As Boskovsky in October 1979 had to cancel for health reasons for the New Year's concert in 1980, the Philharmonic took again a fundamental decision: with Lorin Maazel an internationally acknowledged conductor he was elected, who directed the concert until 1986.

After that it was decided the the artistic director had to be changed every year. The first was in 1987 Herbert von Karajan with an unforgettable concert, followed him Claudio Abbado (1988 and 1991), Carlos Kleiber (1989 and 1992), Zubin Mehta (1990, 1995, 1998 , 2007, 2015), Riccardo Muti (1993, 1997, 2000 , 2004, 2018), Lorin Maazel (1994, 1996, 1999, 2005), Nikolaus Harnoncourt (2001, 2003), Seiji Ozawa (2002), Mariss Jansons (2006, 2012, 2016), Georges Prêtre ( 2008, 2010), Daniel Barenboim (2009, 2014) and Franz Welser-Möst (2011, 2013), Gustavo Dudamel (2017), Christian Thielemann (2019). Now I'm telling you a secret, 2020 Andris Nelsons!

I believe this was the first time I had been into the Chapter House at York Minster. When we called in it was being prepared for a reception of some form, so I am unsure whether these light effects are normal. Either way it added to the impression and views of the stained glass windows.

the interior I designed for my study. We had to create a shop. I chose one for Gothic lifestyle.. I just wanted to make everything black with some crazy materials. Like asphalt on the floor, bitumen and metal on the walls and ceiling..

Here're some thoughts and impressions on D700 from a few weeks use.

1. big and heavy (compared to my Eos Xsi)

2. but sturdy and reliable, at least it feels

3. out-of-camera jpeg are HELL and almost useless (but doesn't really matter to me)

4. raw images are a lot better, but below my expectation (maybe I expected too much)

5. DR is far below my expectation. Wide DR was a big selling point to me. Dxo Mark claims it has 2 EV wider DR than Eos xsi, but my experience in the filed and some systematic testing (I'll post it later. I found very interesting differences between two cameras) are not quite convincing. Probably it has a better DR than Eos Xsi, but not that great extent. It'd be a good idea to slightly underexpose every time bright objects are in the frame because it makes managing highlight easier and noise levels in dark areas are impressively low in D700, so that you can compensate dark area in raw processing.

6. it is GREAT to have free wireless flash without additional equips.

7. It works great with Voigtlander MF lens thanks to brighter/bigger VF and accurate focusing indicator. MF is a lot easier in D700 than in Eos Xsi.

8. LCD screen is great, but tend to tint yellow. I'm not sure if it's a jpeg processing problem or LCD problem. Probably both.

9. above combined with poor jpeg quality, reviewing images on LCD truly SUCKS. It makes shooting less enjoyable. But images (I mean raw converted) are much much better on computer monitors.

10. ISO performance is very impressive. I think this is the biggest strength of this camera.

I'm not so impressed by this camera especially in DR. Moreover, more than 3 times higher price tag than Eos Xsi is not so well justified. The sensor in d700 is ranked 7th in Dxo mark among all sensors tested, including medium format digitals. I'll try to believe that and make myself convinced. Anyway it's still one of the best FF DSLR on the market with affordable prices (D3 series are beyond my scope. They are ridiculously expensive). DR of d700 was not that impressive in that highlight recovery in d700 does not quite confirm 2EV advantage over Eos Xsi claimed in many DSLR review sites. I'm sure I'd be sad when d700 successor comes out, considering massive DR of d7000 and pentax K-5 (they are supposedly using the same Sony sensors). Their DR are claimed around 14EV which is almost DR of negative film. At that point upgrading to d700's successor would be very tempting.

I'll update this post if I come up with more.
