Tundra howls to signal his pack. The echoed response is chilling and powerful.

Canis Lupus 'Nuka' captured howling during a wolf walk photography tour of the UK Wolf Conservation Trust ( Beenham Farm ). This is the dominant male in the Beenham pack handled at the trust. An excellent experience with such charismatic animals. The trust holds the largest pack in captivity in the UK. This is my practice for a future North America trip in the wild. Guided by Bob Brind Surch of 'Natures Photos'.

It's not unusual to hear wolves howling during the day in Quebec's forests.

Howler monkeys are considered one of the loudest land animals, with their vocalizations heard up to a few miles away, even in dense forest. Howler monkeys generally move quadrupedally on the tops of branches, usually grasping a branch with at least two hands or one hand and the tail at all times. Their strong prehensile tails are able to support their entire body weight.

Edited to bring out a stronger silhouette and vignetting to create a 'moon' light source.

I typed a whole thing and then posted the wrong pic. Argh!

Moby Dick is my favorite American novel, and Melville inspires my landscape and seascape photography! “But as in landlessness alone resides the highest truth, shoreless, indefinite as God - so better is it to perish in that howling infinite, than be ingloriously dashed upon the lee, even if that were safety! For worm-like, then, oh! who would craven crawl to land!” ― Herman Melville, Moby Dick

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.

Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods: We need the tonic of wildness...At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.

A Burt field of sage brush stood defiantly peeking out from miles of golden sands. Like a scene from some Lord of the Rings movie. Ash ridden and quiet as could be.... just a faint howling wind is heard... rolling down over the Eastern Sierra ridge. So softly they swayed... blackened bodies twisting this way and that. Curving this way and that. Their perceived stillness only relative to my time and space of course. Eagerly exploding from the earth like like wooden zombies. Showing off their hidden bones for once... i found this fella deliberately arched for me, accenting his wonderful friend in the background... who just so happen to be in line with a wonderfully radiant splash of evening light as it seemed to emanate from his squiggly frame. Handheld because my tripod was just to fussy and uncooperative at the moment. Hip Hip hooray for high ISO's and inspiring wise ass punks.

This moment reminds me of a quote someone recently sent to me... it's so beautiful I can hardly stand it. Here it is, I hope it lifts you up today and reminds you how resilient you truly are and that you will always be... forever.... in this form or that.... unmovable and eternally you.

"Everything you see has its roots in the unseen world.

The forms may change, yet the essence remains the same.

Every wonderful sight will vanish; every sweet word will fade,

But do not be disheartened,

The source they come from is eternal, growing,

Branching out, giving new life and new joy.

Why do you weep?

The source is within you

And this whole world is springing up from it."

-- Jelaluddin Rumi

Ok, you can smile now.

Thanks babe.

Howleen shows off her aerial kung fu skills!

As you can see, I decided to take Howleen's hair down. I really didn't like that conehead look she had, but I wasn't too sure what I wanted to do with it until I saw a couple of photos of her with hair similar to this. From the right angle, it looks like a sunburst.

This shot isn't quite how I wanted it. I love the paper background, but it's too much the same color as Howleen is. I would've preferred a blue background, but it was proving to be too tricky to photoshop it that way (particularly because her hair is so wild).

It's still pretty cool, though, I reckon.

The spots came from one of Dyrk Wyst's textures called "the gift of snow".
