In May 1976 I was a 16 year old Junior in high school with a 10 speed bike and a 110 instamatic. The ex Lehigh Valley branch down to Lima was about a mile and a half from home. You could hear the Conrail local to Lima blowing for the crossings at Rush Mendon Road and at Rochester Junction, and I would have plenty of time to ride over to Sibley Road or to Monroe Street in Honeoye Falls and get the train at the crossing. Here is PC RS-11 7604 at the Monroe Street crossing in Honeoye Falls, NY sometime in May 1976. Scan of a matte finish print.
Penn Central 9577 is stopped at the Main St. crossing in Honeoye Falls, NY at dusk on April 21, 1977. The brakeman is walking up to flag the crossing with a flare. This is the Conrail local that ran from Rochester to Lima and return on the old Lehigh Valley Rochester Branch. The train is heading back North after finishing up its work in Lima, about 5 miles to the South. My chase vehicle at the time was my 10 speed bike, and I did chase the train from Lima to Honeoye Falls. It was getting dark at this point and I still had about a 4 mile bike ride home.
CR 2516 & 2500 spot a gondola on the old Peanut Line in Honeoye Falls, NY on February 27, 1980. It was hard to tell that there was actually any rail in those weeds. The gondola was for a waste concern company IIRC. View is along Norton Street, looking toward Main Street in Honeoye Falls.
Conrail U25-B 2516 at Monroe Street in Honeoye Falls, NY on March 28, 1980. This was the branch down to Lima, and part of the Lehigh Valleys Rochester Branch.
LA&L 425 & 426 lead 50 cars South at Golah Road in Rush, NY on March 12, 2025. The high waters of Honeoye Creek even had a decent reflection.
In a view from the high bank of Honeoye Creek the LA&L road train has the trio as it heads North with 22 cars on February 24, 2025. Usually I get in the water with waders on, or along the shore on the other side of the creek, but thought I would check out a different angle.
Lucky shot! The guy in the car looks like he could be a character in a Dickens novel, and the name of the bookstore is Bleak House
LA&L 433 & 425 lead 20 cars as they cross over mostly frozen Honeoye Creek in Rush, NY on January 16, 2025. The ice was good and solid where I was standing.
The Conrail local to Lima is on the return trip North and is stopped at Honeoye Falls, NY after sunset on April 24, 1979. The crew would tie it down and wait for a ride back to the city. It was not unusual to find the local tied down for the night at Honeoye Falls or Rochester Junction.
The Conrail Lima local is at Rochester Jct. in Mendon, NY on July 20, 1979, putting its train together for the trip North to Rochester, The small Rochester Jct. yard is grown in with weeds. The cars from Lima are on the right. It was common practice to take just the cars that were going to Honeoye Falls and Lima when the Southbound train got to Roch. Jct. All the cars that were from customers on the Northern end of the line would be left at Roch. Jct. and picked up on the return trip North. This view is looking East from Plains Road.
Honeoye Falls.
It's not the same without the beautiful bright red background. They put in dull red paneling.
The flagman gets ready to climb back onto CR 2031 at the Corby Road crossing in Lima, NY on February 20, 1979. With the snow packed deep on the tracks, the local left its train in Honeoye Falls and ran light down to Lima and return to clean the rails off. The light was fading as the 2031 crossed Corby Road shortly before dusk.
Conrail's Lima local has outlawed at Rochester Junction on the return trip back to Rochester, and is awaiting the rested crew on 1/9/1980. The local often outlawed at Honeoye Falls or at Rochester Junction. The crew would arrive shortly and the train would head back to Rochester. The train is parked on the ex LV Rochester Branch, next to the station platform and old MOW building.
Conrail RS-11 7601 leads the Lima local back North and across the trestle over Honeoye Creek in Mendon, NY on March 21, 1979. This branch line was part of the Lehigh Valleys Rochester Branch. The trestle was located just a short walk South of the Sibley Road grade crossing. This line was abandoned by Conrail in 1981. I used to fish here frequently in my younger years as this is only about a mile and a half from the old homestead.
LA&L 418 is at the South end of one of the Fall Foliage excursions in West Rush, NY on October 18, 2014. The train is crossing the bridge over Honeoye Creek. I spent many days of my youth fishing in Honeoye Creek, mostly in "downtown" Rush, and watching LV freights go by there.
Conrail 7600 spots a couple of hoppers at Beam Milling in Honeoye Falls, NY on 5/1/1979. The Honeoye Falls station is out of view to the left. This is ex Lehigh Valley trackage that Conrail used until 1981.
Probably the best view in the entire Finger Lakes region in upstate New York. This is the Harriet Hollister Spencer Recreation Area at the south end of Honeoye Lake - a stunning place for hiking or just enjoying a book!
Shots taken around downtown Honeoye Falls.
Late afternoon sun let me catch some reflections in Honeoye creek just behind the falls.
I had just finished showing properties and set the GPS to go to my next appointment in Honeoye Falls. I almost always set the GPS to take the back roads instead of the main highway. I was driving along, minding my own business when suddenly I passed this temple. How could something like this sit in Henrietta and I've never heard of it before? It is stunning and I don't even know if I could find it again!
WNYP 426 & LA&L 425 lead 22 cars as they cross Honeoye Creek in Rush, NY on October 28, 2024. I was standing in ice cold water up to my crotch to get the shot. I need to spend the money for a new set of chest waders. Good thing I brought along dry socks and shoes to put on when I got done.
The Conrail local to Lima, NY is headed back North at Corby Road at sunset on April 24, 1979. Corby Road was about half way between Honeoye Falls and Lima. The train outlawed at the Main Street crossing in Honeoye Falls on this day, and it was pretty dark when it got there. I did get a couple of pics of it there, but they are not the best quality. This was ex Lehigh Valley Rochester Branch trackage.
Riding through Honeoye Falls yesterday,I noticed some commotion in the creek. I stopped and managed a few snaps of what must have been a couple running late for their ceremony. Good luck kids!
Have to go up there for a look every year around this time. You never quite know what your going to get.
Honeoye Lake, one of the smaller Finger Lakes, in the distance.

The train is at Corby Road, which was the only grade crossing between Lima and Honeoye Falls. This trackage was part of the Lehigh Valley Rochester Branch, and it only survived under Conrail until 1981. RS-32's and RS-11's were common power for the Lima local at the time.
Conrail was a little over a year old when SW1500 9577 was leading the local across the ex LV trestle over Honeoye Creek in Mendon, NY on 4/28/1977. The train is returning North from Lima shortly before dusk. The trestle was called "Pa Pa Trestle" by many. It was pretty grown in along the sides until it got out over Honeoye Creek.
