Assassin is a young male Hawk. The males tend to be smaller than the females but they have impressive skills in the air.

They can soar and hover. They will perform jaw-dropping aerial dives and fly backward! They are agile in the air and will chase prey down on the ground. Their most dramatic display is their sky dancing, which the male uses to attract a female.

Falconry is the ancient art of hunting with birds of prey. A visit to Dunrobin Castle now includes daily birds of prey flying demonstrations on the Castle lawn. Falconry was originally developed as a means of hunting fast or difficult prey as food for the table, and is still practiced for this purpose in many parts of the world today.

The Harris hawk or Harris's hawk is unique amongst the raptors for hunting in family groups. This co-operative behaviour allows it to capture larger prey than would otherwise be possible.

Found from the southwestern United States down to Chile and central Argentina, Harris hawks are medium to large birds of prey with dark brown and chestnut plumage and a white-tipped tail. They occupy sparsely covered habitats including semi-desert, woodlands, marshlands and mangroves. Some individuals are sighted in Britain; however these are likely to be escapees from falconry, a purpose for which they are one of the most popular hawks.

The Harris's hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus), formerly known as the bay-winged hawk, dusky hawk, and sometimes a wolf hawk, and known in Latin America as peuco, is a medium-large bird of prey that breeds from the southwestern United States south to Chile, central Argentina, and Brazil. Birds are sometimes reported at large in Western Europe, especially Britain, but it is a popular species in falconry and these records almost invariably all refer to escapes from captivity.

"The most social of North American raptors, these birds are often found in groups, cooperatively attending nests and hunting together as a team. When hunting, a group of hawks surround their prey, flush it for another to catch, or take turns chasing it." Cornell Lab of Ornithology"

Harris Hawk pair having a look around as several birds were in the area.

They did a controlled burn at Sweetwater on November 3, 2021. When Vaughn and I visited there on November 25 and the reeds were just starting to grow back. Today, December 20, there was lots of new growth and lots more water fowl and a Harris hawk.
