Magor Marsh in lovely winter sunshine.

GWT 630 was the first coach to be purchased by South Yorkshire Motors after the cessation of hostilities in WW2, being acquired in 1948.

Purchased for preservationupon withdrawal the vehicle has had a number of owners. The last one to use the vehicle was Classic Coaches of High Wycombe who certified the vehicle on acquisition. Sold to Red Arrow of Huddersfield, on the failure of the Classic Coaches business, it was not used, being in need of some remedial attention to the bodywork caused by outside storage. Having been purchased by Greg Lawson in 2004, the vehicle is at present being overhauled and repainted so that it can take to the road again in 2009.

Dewsbury Bus Museum open day on 14th March 2010

A rather battered leafcutter bee on some purple loosestrife. Magor Marsh SSSI.

After Oscar had made off with the apple, most of the other people left, but I stayed on. I therefore saw this second vole emerge from a burrow much further along the reen (water-filled ditches are called reens on the Gwent levels) and swim directly to the apple feeding platform. It looked less than impressed with what it found.

Attending the spring open day for the Dewsbury Bus Museum is GWT 630, a Burlingham-bodied Albion Valkyrie CX13 which was new in December 1947 (66 years old), and with a top speed of 30mph. It has been preserved as South Yorkshire (Pontefract) 61, being owned and operated by GP Lawson trading as Yesteryear Coaches - I have a photo of this in York outside the former LNER offices (Cedar Court Hotel)

New to Todmorden JOC on February 1st 1967 is Willowbrook CF1312 bodied Leyland Leopard L1 NWW 89E. This bus has had a few different liveries, but had never been withdrawn or sold on to another company during its working life.

When new it was in the livery as seen today, but after Todmorden JOC merged with Halifax Corporation it then took on their colourful livery instead; and then later gained the WYPTE green and buttermilk livery when Metro was formed.... it then went into preservation in 1984 immediately after being withdrawn from service.

I was asked to bring a few toads to the Magor Marsh open day, so the night before I walked along the canal after dark, and came back with four. I put them in a box, with an air hole, and left them overnight.

In the morning I had two taods in the box, the other two having escaped through the air hole. A short search retreived both of them.

They went down very well at the event, as they are slow enough to be handled (unlike the frogs brought by someone else). I released them unharmed back where I found them that night.
