Our friends Sarah and Scott gave us two growing kits, an amaryllis and an herb garden. The herbs have germinated! The tall ones on the right are cilantro, but I can't remember which type the shorter ones on the left are. I'm being very mindful to water them every day, which is good for me - I'm often much too distracted from taking care of the everyday needs of my life.
In a symbolic fashion, these germinating seeds are nicely representative of the intellectual work I'm trying to accomplish lately. I just started a new writing group with two fellow PhD students, so we are working on nurturing our writing skills together. And at the moment, the dominant force in my life is my constant preoccupation with the nontrivial task of determining a dissertation direction. I need to come up with just one solid focus, but it's not easy to distill from the three dozen research ideas I've collected over the last few years.
Being an interdisciplinary scholar doesn't make it any easier, since my interests fall into several diverse areas - virtual teams and distributed collaboration, network dynamics and complex systems, and sociology of science. However, I'm thankful to have many ideas from which to develop the one that will consume the next two years (or so) of my life.
The kits of one raccoon family just love to play in the trees on either side of my backyard. My son & I find watching them hilarious. We often joke that there seems to be a particularly strong wind but it's only localized in one tree. A couple of branches will be bobbing up & down while the rest sway madly back & forth. Occasionally a head, tail or back end sticks out before disappearing into the tree again.
One evening I was sitting outside when this family arrived so I went inside to get some dog kibble so they'd stay around while I was outside. The kits will eat some & then play in the trees or water while mom finishes off what's left. I brought my camera out with the kibble so was able to capture some of their antics. Photos aren't that sharp as the kits are never still & I don't know exactly where a part will pop out. Hope you enjoy this series & that it gives you an idea how sweet & playful they can be.

This is an 'edibles' kit.
Here's one of my new introductions! I call it a garden-in-a-bucket, and this particular one is an 'edible' kit. It includes the white, plastic, short bucket you see, a bag of my hand-mixed potting mix, and three varieties of seed that I've successfully container grown myself.
Here's a picture of the rim of one of the pinch pots with dry potting mix. You can see the smoothed edges.
As you can see, I dressed it up a bit with shredded mauve paper (recycled from a first attempt at patterning) and some ribbon lengths. I think it looks pretty good! :) I have no skill at arranging things, be it gift baskets or otherwise, so this very simple 'arrangement' made my day.
These cheery green bottles were cut off, smoothed, and I've got them set up as a kit. You get a pack of flower seeds and a pack of herb seeds with this kit, as well as the mix.
