Nothing starts the day off right than the morning paper to find out whats going on in the world!
(Yes I know tv and the internet is more instant in the news gratification department, but the paper is a tried and true classic where one relaxes while eating and reading the paper making their next move of the day.)

The new macro lens I'm using? Now THAT is pretty sweet.
DSC03838 - Yes, it still produces wonderful photos. But the only instant gratification comes from the solid, mechanical, satisfying click of the shutter.
The Leica IIIf is from 1952 and the Summar 5cm f2 lens is from 1936. I apologize to the hard core Leica purists for using a non-matching hood-lens combination. The little hood fits, and I love the design.

My wife was nice enough, at 1am in the morning, to stand in and let me take some photos of her from the wedding she participated in. I wish she could have dressed here, at home, before leaving for the wedding, which would have yielded less wrinkles in the dress.
This was a wedding, I was told not directly, that I would photograph...didn't happen; this was FAMILY too (Oh well). The best thing about this situation is that I processed and printed up the photos the same morning, finishing up at 4:30am. The next day, we were in the same vicinity that the newly married couple would be, and someone said (who was at the wedding, plus whom I never met before), "Oh, you all have your wedding photos back already?"
All the gratification that I needed not being the official photographer. Not sure to this day why I didn't photograph this event, but at least my wife gave me a chance. Love ya!
Note: I wanted to do all of my edits via Lightroom. Although I had some success from it, the constant updating of the sidecar file really slowed down the editing process at times; having to close the application numerous times. Moreover, it can be done if you have the time.

George Honey (25 May 1822 – 28 May 1880) was a British actor, comedian and singer. He was in the original productions of Caste by T. W. Robertson, and Engaged by W. S. Gilbert.
His acting career began in November 1848 at the Princess's Theatre, London, in the role of Pan in Midas. He was not regarded as a comedian in his early career, but as a singer; he joined the Pyne & Harrison Opera Company and appeared in several operas. One of these was The Rose of Castille, in which he appeared in the original production in 1857 at the Lyceum Theatre, London. Another was Martha in 1858 at the Drury Lane theatre, in an English translation; a reviewer in The Musical World wrote, "Mr. George Honey made an amusing caricature of Lord Tristan, but was not always to be praised for his extravagances."
From the early 1860s he concentrated on the dramatic stage, mainly in comic roles playing dissipated characters, for which he became popular.
In 1865 he appeared in William Brough's burlesque Prince Amabel; in 1866 he was in Watts Phillips's The Huguenot Captain.
In 1867 he appeared at the Prince of Wales Theatre in the original production of Caste by T. W. Robertson, which opened on 6 April; he played the part of Eccles. In the Daily News on 8 April, a critic wrote about this production:
Instead of the conventional clowns who are put in by slop-work dramatists to lighten the serious interest of their work, we have real characters who think, speak, and act like human beings, and yet are intensely amusing and interesting. The drunken father, evidently made up from Mr. George Cruikshank's pictures of The Bottle, is admirably played by Mr. George Honey, who made his first appearance at this theatre, and who never acted better.... The make-up, the voice, the manner, the savagery in one part, the hypocritical maudlin grief in another, the toadying to wealth in another, the disgust and abuse when wealth refuses to deposit even a sovereign, the exits and entrances of this character, are things to be gratefully remembered....
He was in the original production, which opened on 16 April 1870 at the Vaudeville Theatre, of For Love or Money by Andrew Haliday.
He appeared in the play Money by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, playing the part of Graves. He first took this role in 1869; the play was revived at the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1872 and 1875, where it made a greater impression on audiences. In the Standard on 31 May 1875, a critic wrote:
A noticeable and welcome feature in the revival is the return of Mr. George Honey, who resumes his part of Graves, one of the most genuine and unexaggerated examples of pure humour the modern stage has witnessed. Before Mr. Honey has uttered three sentences the character of Graves is distinctly placed before the spectator. The manner in which the sigh of grief for the memory of "sainted Maria" gives place to the approving criticism on the glass of sherry, and the aspect of bereavement changes to a look of gratification as his eye lights on the pleasant face of Lady Franklin, is irresistibly amusing; and the subsequent scene between the two is the perfection of comedy acting....
He was successful in the original cast of W.S.Gilbert's comedy Engaged, which opened on 3 October 1877 at the Haymarket Theatre; he played the part of Cheviot Hill. He returned to the role of Eccles in Caste, from January to May 1879 at the Prince of Wales Theatre.
He retired due to ill-health in 1879; he died in London in 1880

Meanwhile, I'm far more active at Instagram, where it takes seconds to crop any shot to a lo-res square the size of a $#!+ty iPhone screen, and a single click to slap a 'creative' kitsch filter onto it. INSTAnt GRAtification! (finally deciphered the Instagram name).
One of the charms of film photography is the lack of instant gratification. I captured this scene in the middle of March and since then had been slowly filling the rest of the roll with other images. Now is July, and I finally made the last exposure and developed the film. Aside from being just a pleasant view, I now enjoy the memory of that early spring hike along the Rose River in the Shenandoah National Park.

Passing by the bus stop on Charleston and Maryland Pkwy., I noticed this man and his walker. I went to the side of the bus stop and pulled out my Polaroid camera. I then attempted to get his attention to see if I could take his portrait. He appeared to be in a deep nap at that moment, so I didn't want to continue trying to get his attention. I also couldn't miss capturing this moment either. I decided to just take the Polaroid, and then I stuck two dollars in an opening on his backpack.
Walking around Finlday, OH the other day, I couldn't help but lug around the Polaroid 420 Land camera and perfect my technique. So far so good!

Today I am grateful for homemade food. As I have gotten older I have realized that certain foods just don't sit well with my body. In addition to age, each pregnancy has taught me a thing or two about what works for my body. The thing about food that is hard, but oh so important, is deciding that what you eat is more important to your vitality than the instant gratification of food that will leave you feeling drained, bloated, or sick. I am grateful I have the choice to choose which foods I eat and how I cook them. As well as learning to listen to my body enough to know what is the right for me. #htfgratitude
They're never easy, are they?
Two people with different personalities, backgrounds, goals, styles, needs, desires, and hopes---trying to meld their lives in a way that creates a new entity that exceeds the sum of the two individuals. Something that nurtures and supports; appreciates and enhances; understands and forgives, entertains and distracts, celebrates and respects, cherishes and adores. All the while trying to avoid the minefields of neuroses, insecurities, misunderstandings, differing dynamics, and the inevitable just plain "bad days".
I'm thinking about all this because, this past weekend, I almost blew it completely with the most important person in my life. You'd think after waiting a lifetime to find the right one that I would be more careful, but alas, I can be a real idiot sometimes.
It's kind of a wonder that I believe relationships can work at all. I loved both my parents dearly, but by the time I was about 8 I was wondering why two people who were so completely different, and who argued as much as they did, were still together? And my grandfather next door made me his trusted co-conspirator in devising ways to get out of the house on weekends so he wouldn't be shut in with my nagging grandmother. I adored her- and had a vastly different relationship with her- but could see why he needed to escape. Around the same time we lived a few doors down the street from Sal and Marie and their four kids, including Cathie who was one of my best friends. At least once every few weeks the kids would all be herded over to our house and my mom would go over to help Marie cover up the latest bruises Sal had imposed. I got to observe that dysfunctional relationship for way too many years before she finally took the kids and left him.
Looking back on those troubled relationships with a more experienced eye, I understand that there was real love involved in all of them. But love alone isn't enough to make a relationship a good one. And for all the rosy feelings at the beginning of one, not all relationships are meant to work out. Sex is a fabulous thing- I'm rather quite fond of it - but if I'm going to spend my life devoted to someone, it's going to be because of a good deal more than my raging hormones.
I'm picky. This is what I look for in someone:
-kindness
-intellectual curiosity
-passion about something
-spirituality
-humility
-creativity
-non-conformity...I value "otherness"
-thoughtfulness about and participation in global issues
-thoughtfulness about and participation in national politics/issues
and the three most important things
-a sense of humor
-a sense of the absurd
-the ability to put up with my complex, odd and inconsistent personality.
Quite a lot to expect, eh? And- of course- it's what I hope t offer the person I love.
Years ago, everyone I knew had read "The Road Less Travelled" by M. Scott Peck. After seeing reference after reference to it, and having people ask repeatedly whether or not I had read it, I finally picked it up. To be honest, I didn't find it to be the mind-bending tome everyone else seemed to think it was, but there were two indelible concepts I took from it. The first had to do with the problem of "procrastination" and, while I won't go into details here, I will say that a few paragraphs he wrote profoundly changed my way of dealing with that problem. The other concept that really resonated with me was the notion that LOVE = WORK.
His point was precisely the first line of this essay. To love someone truly and deeply means that you're willing to put in the real effort involved in the herculean task of melding two disparate lives so that you both grow together and enrich each other's lives, making both of you stronger, happier individuals. Sometimes it means letting go of your own needs to serve the needs of the other. Sometimes it means learning new ways to communicate. Sometimes it means saying something you'd prefer not to, that could possibly be hurtful to the one you love, in order for the relationship to get stronger. And trusting that they will know you are telling them out of love. It's hard work. Every day. But like crops in the field, the end result is nurturing and sustaining...it offers health and happiness.
When I was younger, nearly everyone I knew was interested in "coupling up". Somewhere around the beginning of my 40s, though, fewer and fewer of my friends seemed interested any more. "Too much work" they'd say. "A partner just saps my energy". "Not worth the effort". "Noone understands me". They did, and still do, treat me like I'm from outer space that I not only believe that love relationships are valuable and necessary, but that I think hard work and compromises are worthwhile efforts to make in pursuit of the right one. We've become so fixated on "instant gratification" in our society. When that intersects with the "ME uber alles" that seems to be so many people's mantra, it's no wonder so many relationships fail. Don't get me wrong. I don't think that all relationships are good ones. And I understand that many relationships fail because the needs of each person get consumed or pushed aside by the needs of other person or the commnual needs of the couple. The partnerships I'm in favor of give each of the individuals more personal strength and vitality, more support, more individuality, and more freedom to soar than they had when they were not in the relationship. Otherwise... what's the point?
This past weekend I was wallowing in a bit in self-pity. I let my insecurities overwhelm my intellect. I was impatient. I didn't communicate well. And I wasn't listening hard enough to my heart. Then I reverted to my very worst trait, and ran away from a conflict rather than dealing with a problem. It's not the first time I've regressed like that. Luckily I'm a big one for owning up to my mistakes, and on Monday I called him to apologize.
It's not often that we find a person we think is worth working hard for. Someone worth confronting our own demons for. Someone worth the sacrifices and growing pains. I'm very lucky to be in love with one of those.

“An old fashioned ship's gun, believed to have belonged to an English frigate. It was dredged from the bottom of the Fort River several years ago, and is now in the Port Adelaide Nautical Museum.” [Advertiser 25 Jul 1933]
“Converted into a nautical museum with models, figureheads, photographs, and pictures of ships connected with early Port Adelaide as the main features, the Port Adelaide Museum has been reopened. . . Many interesting nautical .specimens have been acquired for the museum. At a recent auction sale in Adelaide, the bell of the barque County of Merioneth was bought. This ship, which is ending its days at Port Adelaide as a coal hulk, was built at Liverpool in 1880.” [News 9 Aug 1933]
“the Art Gallery has just purchased a rare and beautiful old oil painting on wood by an unknown artist, and probably of the 15th century French period. The Director (Mr. McCubbin) is very enthusiastic about the acquisition of their first example of that period, and so well preserved, too. Subject of the painting: St. Martin of Tours and St. Nicholas. According to Mr. McCubbin, it was in the art gallery at Port Adelaide Institute for many years, but little is known of its Australian history, how it came here, and during recent weeks it has hung on the gallery walls at North terrace, where its striking subject and rich coloring have been much admired.” [Advertiser 21 Oct 1943]
“The painting, known as 'St. Martin of Tours and St. Nicholas,' was purchased by the gallery Board from the Port Adelaide Institute authorities in 1943. It has now been identified by the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, as being by the 'Master of the Uttenheim Altarpiece,' Tyroleset School, and dated about 1460. . . The curator of the institute gallery (Mr. Vernon Smith) said last night that he believed the picture was found in the false bottom of a packing case among a number consigned to a printer who worked in the basement of the institute building, about the end of last century. The printer, E. H. Derrington, gave the picture to the institute. . . the painting was on exhibition at the Port Adelaide Institute's art gallery for many years, but few people knew of its existence. It was lent to the National Gallery in 1943 and subsequently purchased from the institute.” [Advertiser 23 Aug 1950]
“Port Adelaide Nautical Museum. . . Space was becoming desperately short and conditions were very over-crowded. . . New exhibits were continually being presented or lent to the museum. The museum is run and maintained by the Port Adelaide Institute. Money for its upkeep is raised by the institute's subscription library. . .
