L516 emerges through a snow globe atmosphere pulling into New Richmond at night. We might see snow again next week, then again, I'd be perfectly content if it misses us. March 24, 2024.
Almost three years ago, on 12 November 2017, I went with a group of seven birding friends on a very enjoyable day trip S and SE of Calgary. A beautiful old barn on one of the roads was an unexpected treat (for me) and, as I only managed to take a few rapid shots of it through the windscreen from the back seat, I was determined to one day do this drive myself and take a better look at this fine old barn (from the road, as usual).
Three days ago, 21 September 2020, was THE day! It started around 9:00 am with a drive south to the Saskatoon Farm for breakfast. It was very quiet at that early hour and on a weekday, though I knew it would get busier as the day wore on. There are always all sorts of things to photograph there, including colourful flowers, a chicken or two, and various odds and ends. There is sadness at the Farm at the moment, as someone stole one of their much-loved cats, named Alfie, a matter of days ago. He is a pure grey cat and he has a sister at the Farm who looks just like him. She now wanders around the farm grounds, looking for him, in vain. Despite pleas to return Alfie, there has been no response.
From the Farm, the next destination was to go and find the old barn again. When I was there in 2017, I'm not sure if I saw the old rocking horses on each fence post. We were carpooling and I suspect they were out of my view. The barn is certainly weathered, but it is still standing straight and tall.
Driving further S and SE, more barns were to be seen. Part of the drive was in an area that I had explored recently. A few old grain elevators were thrown in for good measure.
As for birds, where were they? Several Mourning Doves, but not a single Hawk of any kind and really no small birds, either. A handful of Grey Partridge taking off were pretty much the only birds we saw. However, this was not planned as a birding day, but as an old barn day, and it turned out to be satisfyingly rewarding!

How did this amazing sphere of granite form? It sits precariously on a narrow pedestal of rock in the Sierra national forest, in easy view of the road along northern portion of the Sierra Vista National Scenic Byway.
It's not a glacial erratic, the guidebook says, because it has the same mineral composition (granodiorite) as the bedrock underneath it. There's continuous feldspar between the base and the globe, too.
Was it carved by humans? There are rock spheres in the jungles of Costa Rica of comparable size that are considered pre-Columbian sculptures. This one, though, is not as perfect; its shape is oblate and irregular. No native Americans of the area were known to make such sculptures, either. So we can dismiss a design inference.
The guidebook explains, "the sphere is the product of erosion along joints and cracks, coupled with thousands of years of weathering." Pretty neat result.
An old photograph appears to show Teddy Roosevelt in a party on horseback by this rock in 1903, but there is some doubt about whether it was Roosevelt or someone else resembling him. He was in Yosemite in May of that year but probably too far away for a ride to Globe Rock, and no documents record a visit by him. It's possible, though.

I copied the idea of putting globes in the antique laundry basket from my friend Mandy. I came up with the putting of a round mirror on top to make it a table.

United Airlines long-haul network is nothing short of impressive; within the Big 3, the carrier operates by far the most comprehensive within the United States and that doesn't appear to change as the airline revealed both new and reinstatements for the upcoming W23 schedule taking place from late-October 2023.
For United Airlines, the airline has 2 hubs located in the West Coast of the United States and both are in the state of California, the largest being San Francisco which is their primary hub within the area and a major gateway to the Asia-Pacific region, whilst Los Angeles comes second place owing to extensive competition with their market share in third place behind American Airlines and Delta Air Lines who both also have hubs here.
Where United Airlines may lack in domestic connectivity, they make up for it with their long-haul network which is due to expand come late-October 2023 as the carrier is introducing 5 international routes across the Pacific, trumping both American and Delta.
When you look at United Airlines history, their international network started to take shape in 1986 when the carrier took over Pan Am's lucrative Pacific Division, inheriting a large chunk of routes towards Asia with both legacy hubs at Los Angeles and San Francisco benefitting, as well as Seattle which that hub would be gradually wound down at the turn of the 21st Century. By 1991, United Airlines international network expanded when they acquired Pan Am's London Heathrow operations as well as their Latin America and Caribbean network in 1992.
Today, United's long-haul network out of Los Angeles is solely filled by their Boeing 787 fleet and that has been the case since 2016 when the carrier converted Los Angeles pilot base into solely Boeing 787s on long-haul flights. On a daily basis, the Boeing 787-9 and longer Boeing 787-10 provide the bread-and-butter of the carrier's long-haul operations out of Los Angeles and that's not expected to change.
Out of the 4 international routes that United Airlines currently serves out of Los Angeles for the S23 schedule, 3 out of 4 are operated by Boeing 787-9s which includes London Heathrow, Melbourne-Tullamarine and Sydney-Kingsford Smith. The sole Boeing 787-10 flight operates daily to Tokyo-Haneda (UA39/38). For the W23 schedule, 3 out of the planned 8 long-haul routes will be filled by Boeing 787-10s, not only with the reintroduction of direct flights to Tokyo-Narita, but also when London Heathrow goes back to daily operations, capacity will shift from Boeing 787-9s to the larger Boeing 787-10.
Currently, United Airlines operates 71 Boeing 787s, which includes 12 Boeing 787-8s, 38 Boeing 787-9s and 21 Boeing 787-10s. United Airlines have 100 Boeing 787s on-order, split between the -8 to -10 models.
November One Six Zero Zero Nine is one of 21 Boeing 787-10s operated by United Airlines, delivered new to the carrier on 26th April 2019 and she is powered by 2 General Electric GEnx-1B engines.

Globe thistles have spherical flower heads with numerous small, cylindrical flowers. They are part of the daisy family ( Asteracae) and are native to Europe and Central Asia. The flowers are often a pale blue or steel-blue colour and are known to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.
The plants are often used as cut or dried flowers for decorative purposes.

A non-invasive, very attractive, insect (see the tiny bee, or maybe it's a hoverfly?) and bird-friendly thistle in the little garden around the Lower Bridger School. The flowers are certainly beautiful.

A species of Globe Mallow (Sphaeralcea). At least 4 species of orange-flowered Sphaeralcea are found in the greater Los Vegas area; I am unsure as to which one I've got here. Photographed in Nevada on Mount Charleston between 7000' and 8000' elevation. Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Clark County, Nevada.
