After lying derelict and getting increasingly run- down, it looks as if the beautiful, elegant Lyceum Cinema, Charles J McNair’s art deco masterpiece in Govan, Glasgow might be getting a new lease of life - there are signs for the Lyceum Hub on the door and people working inside - fingers crossed 😀 #lyceum #lyceumcinema #lyceumcinemaglasgow #artdeco #artdecocinema #glasgowartdeco #glasgowarchitecture #cinema #cinemas #scottishcinemas #glasgowcinema #scottishcinemas #govan #lyceumhub #charlesjmcnair #cinematreasures #glasgowsouthside #southsideglasgow

Dalkeith Palace (c. 1702) on the site of an earlier castle and the seat of the Montagu Douglas Scott family. The Palace was the creation of Anna Scott, the 1st Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch’s widow, who employed architect James Smith. Alterations by John Adam (1762) and James Playfair (1786).

"When the Duke of Monmouth died his widow, Anne, asked James Smith to use William of Orange's Palace in Holland as a model for Dalkeith Palace. James Smith completed this large Scottish Country House in 1701-11: it was deemed the grandest of Scottish Classical Houses."

Former Templeton Carpet Factory on Glasgow Green, opened in 1892. According to Wikipedia, ‘After repeated design proposals had been rejected by Glasgow Corporation, James Templeton hired the famous architect William Leiper to produce a design that would be so grand it could not possibly be rejected, so William Leiper modelled the building on the Doge’s Palace in Venice.’ Love it😀 #templetonsbusinesscentre #templetonscarpetfactory #dogespalace #glasgowarchitecture #scottisharchitecture #glasgow #glasgowcorporation #glasgowgreen #glasgowphotography #ornate #ornatebuildings #ornatearchitecture #gothicstyle

22-storey residential tower block in the Anniesland area of Glasgow, Scotland, designed by J Holmes & Partners and completed in 1968. It is the tallest listed building in Scotland, and is remarkably similar to Ernő Goldfinger's later and more famous Trellick Tower in London. It is the only tower block in Glasgow to have been granted a category A listing

Situated in Glasgow, the Red Road Flats are in the process of being demolished. Some people will be glad to see the back of them but I think personally I will miss them. They are amongst the tallest buildings in the city and the landscape of North Glasgow will be forever altered once they disappear.

arguably this is the only elevation worth capturing...............

and will be seen by relatively few people. Looking forward to expolring the interior in a few months.

Doing an archive tidy up yesterday I came across this negative (another from the department of ‘I don’t remember taking that’) This is the Orient Building in McPhater Street, Cowcaddens, Glasgow before redevelopent, as you can see, it’s not just the building that’s in poor condition, the top picture shows really bad tramlines on the negative and an ugly sign. I was curious to see what Photoshop Generative Fill could do and the picture on the bottom is the result. All achieved by just drawing a ‘matching ants’ box around each area, and applying Generative Fill without tying any text into the dialogue box, just letting Photoshop work it out, quite impressive 😀📷 #photos #photography #photoshop #generativefill #adobe #adobephotoshop #restoration #photorestoration #glasgow #glasgowarchitecture #scottisharchitecture #cowcaddens #orientbuilding #glasgowcity

A beautiful library in Oxford or a church in Rome? No, it’s the glorious interior of Clydebank Co-op, Chalmers Street, Clydebank. I posted a view a few months back and got a chance today to take this from the first floor, ‘B’ listed, designed by Stewart and Paterson and opened on 31st March 1917 as the Central Drapery and Furnishings Warehouse. The four storey red sandstone building was 256 feet long and was the biggest building in Clydebank.

We went to the Banksy Cut and run exhibition in June in Glasgow. The only picture we got was this instax shot taken as part of the exhibition for free,

The 1929 Art Deco of the former C & A department store building in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. When Marks & Spencer closed in the next block, there was talk of how attractive its facade was, for me this is a much better looking building. #marksandspencer #departmentstore #shop #artdeco #artdecostyle #artdecoshop #artdecofacade #sauchiehallstreet #glasgow #glasgowarchitecture #scottisharchitecture #glasgowphotographer #glasgowphotography #artdecoarchitecture

St Andrew's in the Square is an 18th-century category-A-listed former church in Glasgow, Scotland, considered one of the finest classical churches in Britain, and now Glasgow's Centre for Scottish Culture, promoting Scottish music, song and dance.

The church is located in St Andrew's Square, near Glasgow Crossand Glasgow Green, on the edge of the City's East End.

History

The church, inspired by St Martin-in-the-Fieldsin London, was built between 1739 and 1756 by Master Mason Mungo Naismith, and designed by Allan Dreghorn.

While construction of it was started before the nearby St. Andrew's-by-the-Green, it was completed after, making it either the third or fourth oldest church in Glasgow, depending on criterion. The earlier two buildings were Glasgow Cathedraland the Trongate steeple.

It was the first Presbyterian church built after the Reformation, and was commissioned by the city's Tobacco Lords as a demonstration of their wealth and power.

The church was enclosed by a later square, built by William Hamilton between 1786 and 1787, which became fashionable homes for some of Glasgow's wealthiest merchants.

The migration of the city westwards throughout the 19th century, however, resulted in a gradual slumming of the area and a dwindling congregation. The church was last used for a religious service in June 1993.

St Andrew's has played its part in Scottish history; in December 1745, before the church's completion, the Jacobite army, led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, camped around the site, and within its semi-built walls, on its return from their failed invasion of England, and on 23 November 1785, huge crowds of Glaswegians gathered to watch Vincenzo Lunardi take off from the churchyard in a hot air balloon on a flight which took him south-east to Hamiltonand Lanark, before eventually landing in Hawick.

Agnes MClehose (nĂŠe Craig) married her husband James McLehose in the church in 1776.

Agnes is better known as Clarinda whose love letters to Robert Burns under the name Sylvander inspired him to write 'Ae Fond Kiss' for her.
