Many of the shots turned out pretty blurry or ruined by the windshield wipers.. no worris on the blur, it added to the effect on many.
I guess you have to take what you get and hope for the best.

Debuting Brynn Adams as Celeste Santino. Celeste Santino is the second female lead character on the show. Celeste is Doctor Daniel DiLaurentis's ex fiancee, who he will always have feelings for. I am looking for a camera with a bigger sensor- maybe a real DSLR. I'm looking at the Nikon D5100 (because it has a swivel screen) and the Sony Nex 5 (because it's so lightweight-- this may clench the deal for me) and has a CMOS sensor, and a movable screen. I welcome all camera advice also. Heavy just won't work for me, as I like to hike and walk my dogs and take my camera with me. But I want the best sensor I can get, and a camera that does better in low light and in-doors and takes clearer photos.

I heard this song for the first time the other day and it was one of those things where I just shook my head and smiled and felt like something bigger than me is guiding me along right now. I've had so many of those moments lately. I have an upsetting thought or worry go through my mind while I'm driving and then I pass a billboard that says "Stop Your Worries." I have a thought about how hard things are getting and then I see a giant rainbow and hear a song on the radio about how rainbows come after storms. It's completely comforting and overwhelming at the same time. And I love it. I'm grateful for the clarity to see these signs in my life and take comfort from them.
Today was a good day.
My maternal Grandparents (in the photo above) migrated to Australia from the Netherlands in 1951, with their 4 young adult children. Although my Grandfather had been a sea captain in the Dutch Merchant navy, in a new land many migrants must take any job they can get...and in the early 1960s he was working as the Winchman at a gold mine north of Bullfinch (which is north of Southern Cross in Western Australia); it was called the Radio Mine, managed by Mr Barr. With his eldest son (my uncle) my Grandfather was also working on claim of their own, where they stayed in big old army tents. My Grandmother kept this corrugated iron house near the mine "as neat as a pin". It was lined with newspaper and hessian and in this harsh dry country must have seemed like a different world after the damp lush pastures of their homeland, Holland. But like many, they were made of tough stuff and took it in their strides, how proud I am of them, in hindsight!

I like to work different angles when shooting in the water. This is one of the least obvious angles, shooting straight into the wave from the front. For this shot I raised the camera as high as I could to get the foreground reflection. This is such a dynamic environment to shoot in. Everything changes fast and nothing is ever the same. You get what you get and sometimes it's very very beautiful...

Originally opened as a Long John Silvers restaurant in 1976. Sometime in the 2000's an A&W was added here and the building was given some minor renovations.
This was the only interior picture I managed to get, and it was as I was about to walk out the door. The sign and that bell looked pretty old, which is why I took this picture. The place was pretty crowded for the free root beer floats, so interior pictures would have been hard to get, especially in such a tiny space. Like I mentioned before, the dining room is small (and dark as well), and pretty much all of it is A&W 50's diner themed decor (the drive-in murals, retro looking jukebox) with a few LJS posters thrown in. It also feels really old in here.
Going back a few months back to a day out around Newcastle-upon-Tyne during the Northumberland-Tyneside holiday, on the tail end of the day as we headed back to the car, I got photos of all the buses I could manage to get. And posed almost perfectly at the lights in all its dark blue, route-branded splendor is Go North East's 6302, a Wright Streetdeck branded for 'The Castles Express' X21 route - now an X-Lines route, see my previous GNE photo for what's replacing this arguably-nice route brand.
My son, 19 years old. A year out of high school, he finally lets me take some semi-dressed up shots of him. However, he is never without his Boston hat, so I had to take what I could get and was very happy.
There is a story behind many of my pictures. I don't always share the story but there is often one there. I believe this one warrants sharing. Maybe you had to experience it to appreciate it- so it may having little meaning to most people. To me it was special.
On Palm Sunday April 9, 2017 I left on what was going to turn out to be a 39 day, 3,300 mile spring roadtrip. I would end up visiting Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia.
On day 29 while hiking in Carter Caves State Park, KY I stopped to photograph some wet rock walls with plants growing on them. I had the lens (Canon 18-200) I take 80% of my photography with on a Canon 7D Mark II camera mounted on my tripod. Some how the camera and lens fell off the tripod, hit the trail and bounced off the trail and about 30 feet down the side of the mountain. It literally bounced at least 3 times off of boulders while I stood there speechless watching $3,000 worth of gear being demolished. Not that I thought any of it was worth retrieving, I climbed down and picked up the camera and lens. The lens was extended (zoomed in all the way) and instead of being straight it had about a 25% bend in it. I tried powering up the camera but everything appeared ruined. I took the battery out of the camera and put it back in but no luck. Then I took the memory card out and put it back in. I could not believe it- the camera actually powered up. That didn't mean it would work but at least it would turn on. I managed to twist the lens back into one straight piece but it would not focus manually or automatically.
So with much of the trip and most of the waterfalls ahead of me I didn't have my workhorse lens. The other lens just wouldn't do.
After sulking for a couple of days I put tried the lens again. As if by magic it seemed to have been "healed". So for the next week I used it to photograph probably 10 waterfalls, many wild flowers and numerous mountain scenes including several of my favorites- old barns.
I have not mentioned that for the first 35 days of my trip at least 30 of them saw rain and several times it rained without stop for 3 or 4 days. So I was really anxious to get to as many falls as I could in the little time left. But all the rain had the rivers and streams at flood stage with muddy torrents being the rule. So when the sun came out on day 35 it was full speed ahead to get some good shots. And actually it was day 37 before any of the falls had gone down enough and cleared up enough to even photograph. So day 38 was my last day as day 39 would be spent on I-77 driving home.
I drove from Pipestem State Park to Cabin Creek State Park , both in West Virginia. There were two falls there, Cabin Creek Falls and Marsh Fork Falls. Turned out Marsh Fork Falls were beautiful. Not but maybe a 8 foot drop but perfect flow, great lighting and a great setting of trees and mountain shrubs. I must have stayed there for about 3 hours and took probably 500 shots- the majority with my "broken lens". Before I knew it, it was 3:00 and I hadn't eaten since breakfast.
I knew from a sign I had seen that there was a McDonalds at exit 9 on I-77 in the town of Princeton, WV only about 15 miles away. I had already decided on what I would get and couldn't wait. But when I got there low and behold there was a Cracker Barrel also! So after a big meal including grilled trout I got up to leave and the waitress said to me " Have a Blessed Day". For some reason those words rang in my ear.
So then it was off to McDonalds for a vanilla cone for desert. On the way there I couldn't help but think about what a great day it had been, especially so because it was my last day before hittiing the road and the unpleasant task of pulling a 12,000 pound, 34 foot 5th wheel camper down the mountains, thru the tunnels, capped off with driving through Charlotte in the afternoon traffic. Turns out I would have a blow out on the camper 20 miles above Charlotte.
Anyway, I know this short story is getting longer and longer.
I walked up to the counter in McDonalds and the 30 something year old lady taking orders smiled at me and asked what I wanted. I couldn't help but notice the burn scars on her face and arms. All of her fingers on one hand were cut off at the middle knuckle. Several on the other hand were the same way. As she handed me my change she dropped several of the coins on the counter. I tried to act like it was my fault.
Standing there waiting on my order I couldn't help but think about the words "Have A Blessed Day"! A blessed day? I have a blessed life! It was all I could do to hold it together.
I got my cone and turned around to find a small table. The first person who caught my eye was a man in shorts with an artificial leg! Have a Blessed Day!!???
Driving back to the campground I told myself I wanted one more picture. Boy am I greedy- I can never get enough photos. I had seen a cemetery on a hill at the base of the mountains. I thought it may make a nice photo. When I got there I pulled up to the gate that was locked and got out to take a picture- with nothing less than my old trusty lens. But it wouldn't extend. It wouldn't focus automatically or manually. It was completely locked up!!! How it had "healed" and worked for me for those last days I can not explain. Why when the trip was over it would work no more I can not explain?
On the way back to the campground I saw this young buck and got off a few shots with another camera and my zoom lens. I call it "The Last Photo"!
This evening, Amtrak #4 was running just a weeeee bit late, due to a number of issues out west, so I was happy to have been able to get out and shoot it. Interestingly, the protection power they put on it in Winslow, AZ was the GECX #2037, one of the Tier IV demos/leaser "Smurfs."
This one was actually a bit of a grab shot as I went back to the car to get the wide lens and the train blasted off before I could get back trackside, so I took what I could get and I was fairly happy with the result.

The wedding is approaching fairly quickly now (how fast the time is flying the closer we get!) and I've finally decided on how I want to do our handfasting cord (we're working a handfasting into our ceremony right after our rings are exchanged). I've found some beautiful ribbon "yarn" and trellis "yarn" that I'm knitting into cords (well sort of cords) and then I'll be braiding them together and sewing in a few beads here and there. I'm really digging the way the trellis yarn is knitting up. This is a great way for this bride to keep her mind occupied.

TheDiet Chronicles Documents an example of healthy eating or rather mindful eating. An idea of a way one "could" eat as a means to eat healthy and enjoy the process. As black belts and martial artist we are aware that Heart Disease is the number one cause of death among Americans and 1 out of 3 people will develop Type 2 Diabetes. It only makes sense then to make Healthy Eating a part of any self-defense program. Statistics show more people will be hurt by what's on their plate than they ever will be by a punch, kick, throw, or grappling match. Learning martial art techniques is important but where it stops the self-discipline of eating healthy and mindfully begins. Just an idea we explore and one that I ask my students to explore as well.

When we left the Florida Keys for Hawaii, I had a mission. I had written about our vacation rental in the Florida Keys and said "Key West is as far south as you can get and still stay safely in the United States." But someone had corrected me. That honor is held by Hawaii Big Island, where they are still making land today. A volcano spews lava into the sea as we speak, making many acres of new land every year. So we rented the white jeep in the picture, and rented a vacation rental house to stay in, on one of these new lava flows, and then went in search of the Southernmost Point in the United States.
I would like to say my wife and son enjoyed every minute of the search. I'd like to say it... but its hardly true. And "no" I wasn't really sure we were going to make it back without a tow truck.
But my GPS said we found the "Southernmost Point" some 20-30 miles from here! And I corrected our Florida Keys web site the first chance I got.. Check it out: 123FloridaKeys.com

Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis L.) Greensboro NC
About this picture: well, it was early Spring here in NC, and many flowers were opening up, and I decided after two years I would start to learn how to use my new fangled camera, so I went outside and started trying to capture some shots. I broke my telephoto a month ago, and was using the 28-80mm Nikon lens. The Redbud in our front yard was in full bloom, and the big bumble bees were everywhere. The aroma was amazing. I wish I could capture that - maybe that's the next invention! I tried to focus in on one clump of bud/flowers - but I am still learning the camera settings and haven't got the DOF figured out! (How I miss the manual SLR!). At least I can still focus! This particular red bud took a direct lightning hit last summer. It took half the tree down, but the other half lived!
About Redbuds in general
Drive down any interstate highway in the piedmont of North Carolina in early March, and you will see splashes of light purple here and there along the tree line, giving the heart a sense of added hope that Spring is coming. This dash of purple is from one of our more humble native trees, the red bud. Why it’s not called the purple bud is a mystery. Not even the bud itself is red, but some see the color as reddish purple, and perhaps growing in different soils it looks more red than purple. But around here both bud and flower are light purple, or at best purplish pink.
The red bud is actually a member of the bean family. As early spring flower turns to fruit, and as the summer progresses, thick dark bean pods about 3 inches long hang heavily from the red bud limbs, and providing another source of food for a few birds such as bobwhites and cardinals, and some mammals such as deer and squirrels, though the red bud fruit is generally not a food favorite. Bees however love the nectar of the flowers. The bean pods persist often well into winter hanging and rattling in the winter wind well after the leaves have fallen.
In our early forests, red buds, along with dogwoods and ironwoods and sourwoods, would have found their place under the great canopy trees of oak and chestnut and hickory and tulip poplar, taking what sun they could get, and offering another level of habitat for animals and visual beauty for human visitors.
The red bud makes for an excellent garden tree. It’s leaf is sort of a rounded heart shape, about as wide as tall, three to five inches across. The tree tends toward a bushy appearance with multiple branches, though it can be pruned to one or two primary trunks. It’s a bit of a gangly tree, no two looking just alike, thus lending character to the suburban yard. It grows fairly slowly and reaches a maximum height of 20-30 feet at most.
In the fall the large red bud leaves turn yellow and tend to fall from the tree all at once, making for easy care.

I was experimenting with turning down the flash a little and I think it was a mistake for these shots that were further away. I think this one is just badly focused.
