Our new, FREE ebook is full of tips for getting, and staying, in shape! ift.tt/1yZjNkx

About a month ago I left the camera at home and went for a walk with a friend along some sea cliffs just south of Sydney - it was an area I had not explored before and I wanted to use my eyes and look at different compositions. It was a great morning exploring and imaging how it would look through the camera lens. I came across this spot and I knew I would return - but it took a month for me to come back because I was waiting on some good cloud to a nice long exposure and of course some really rough sea conditions (the sea was pumping the morning I took this image).

This was a solo shoot and my senses were heightened - I was also standing about a metre from the edge of a large cliff with an 80 metre drop - thats as close as I get and I was wary. I was after an image that fairly captured the rugged beauty of the sea cliffs that dominate the Sydney coast. After taking this image a rain storm (you can see it in the left of the left hand side of the sky) rolled in and I got soaked!!

I processed using a very different technique to try and bring out the highlights and the darks using the one image - double processing its called and its a technique I will be using again - very effective. The image was processed in PS CC.

Brendan is a amateur photographer based in Sydney Australia who loves exploring and shooting sea and landscapes in different areas sometimes with good mates other times by himself to improve his skills. I'm always after followers so don't be afraid to follow me on my photographic adventures.

it was pizza night...!! Which means it was beer night for me. We always anguish over what we should get and we always get the same thing. Very quick contactless service and the pizza was delicious. OH, and so was the beer. A fine local product.

I lovee this shot.

Took me forever to get.

And I scratched myself 7 times in the process, but I love how it turned out.

Ugh.

I need to borrow Weirdly's camera and remote.

Its EXTREMELY hard getting like that when your short, and the most your camera has is a 10 second timer -.-

I've been playing around with the settings, hence the quality is a bit better ;)

Insect eyes are really difficult to get and often look smooth until you hit the right spot for the focus...... and then the multi-segment eye lenses leave you wondering how they ever see anything as we would?

A frustratingly noisy and not-well-focused shot of a humpback whale breaching. When photographing wildlife, you rarely get the shot you want, so you take the best of the shots you did get and call it a better day.

My loot for this month

Taking pictures of what I get and writing down the prices is my way of keeping an eye on my spending.

I know there are people who get a kick out of looking at loot (I do!), so that's why I share this with you all ^_^

discovered these three new babes in the barn this morning with their mama Toffee.

i'd meant to get and go out in the middle of the night to check on the three due ewes but didn't do it.

glad it went smoothly, and that i slept through the night.

hoping we're working our way into a more dependable breeding flock that can birth without assistance!

she tried to reject the smallest lamb, head butting him away from her and into the walls of the barn, but that little lamb is being strong and persistent, nursing regularly. Later in the day she's been encouraging it to nurse more than not.

Barred Owl - Shenandoah National Park

This is a re-process and crop of an Owl photo I captured back in December of 2008.

Back in May I learned that one of my Bear photos had been stolen from the Web, then mass printed and mass inserted into custom wooden frames that were being sold in gift shops and waysides throughout Shenandoah National Park. Photo Thieves Identified The offending company is Wisconsin based Gift Works Plus.

I learned a lot about photo copyrights from that ordeal, and most of that information I have shared in this previous post: www.flickr.com/photos/lwbrown/8881919764. And for this very reason is why I now place a Copyright watermark on all my Web posted photos, as my signature watermark obviously did not serve the purpose very well in this digital age.

Unless one has their photos officially registered with the U.S.Copyright office, chances are you'll be lucky to actually break even after pursuing a photo thief through the judicial system. This blog by Ian Plant clearly paints that picture: Photography, Copyright and the Internet.

My Retribution

There is more than one way to skin a cat, fight fire with fire, an eye for an eye, etc., etc. After realizing I didn't have much chance for any monetary action, I put my thinking hat on to figure out how I was going to retaliate. Then it hit me - give them bad publicity on the grandest stage of all: the Internet! So I put my web development skills to use and for $3.99 a year I purchased a domain (www.GiftWorksPlus.us) and then used a free site builder tool (actually it was a rather lame tool but to avoid paying hosting fees I opted for it). I built a web site that clearly depicts the dirtbag company that Gift Works Plus really is.

In a few short weeks, the search engines started indexing it and my little $3.99 site is now listed on the first page of search results alongside the dirtbags themselves! HA! (see screenshot below in first comments box, or click here) They deserve all the bad publicity they get, and are gonna get, for a long time to come - because I'm gonna keep chipping away at this stone for as long as it takes. And for $3.99 a year, I may just develop a few more sites to drive the point home even further. HA!

The very first person I met here on the Banks has remained a dear friend since day one. He rented an apartment to me in the off season during house hunting for a beach house of my very own. He allowed dogs... I had a cat, Loki, who ended up very sick the week before I was supposed to come down. I called...I explained and asked if I could push it off for a week. He very kindly said yes. That week went by and the cat was not that much better and needed to be subcutaneously given fluids every other day for another week. I called again and asked if his pet policy included cats. There was a hesitation and so I explained the situation. He asked if the cat was trained...no accidents outside his litter box. Yes, he is and he sleeps a lot and is very well behaved. He took pity on me and rented to us...we searched for a house for 8 days...and late on the 8th day found one of interest and so we asked about extending the stay until the upcoming Monday, after asking what it would cost to do that. This allowed us to get all the offer stuff and beginning negotiations in order before heading home. When we went to pay him the extra, he told us not to...that extra time was no big deal. My first experience in what was to be my new home began with the kindness of this stranger. I knew as he said goodbye when we left that he would be a good friend. I was also certain I would get his dog to like me!!!

We kept in touch thru the process of getting and renovating the house...and he kindly showed me around the island giving me hints of places good to eat and things to see, and where to shop! Rudder the Beach Dog was friendly but not exactly sure of me. On one of my jaunts to see something new, the wild beaches of Hatteras Nat’l seashore, I was pretty certain that my chances to make Rudder like me were dashed when Butch made him get into the back seat, telling him “Susan is our friend and you need to let her ride in the front!” When we got out, he took off over the dunes, found a driftwood stick and promptly dropped it at Butch's feet to throw, ignoring me completely. Sigh..... but then on the next appearance over the dune, he ran right past Butch and dropped the stick at MY feet! I was over the moon happy...I had been accepted into the fold!

Rudder is now receiving Radiation Therapy, after developing seizures and finding the cause is a tumor. I am assisting in helping to raise money for the balance of the radiation and vet bills ...3 more weeks of therapy to go. It is the least I can do for my special friends. Rudder is doing so much better after his first 3 weeks. The glint of playful mischief is back in his eyes and his beach walks are met with playfulness to other dogs. I am praying that this works for him because he is such a special friend, and is the sun rising and setting each day for his owner. They live on a sailboat...his owners dream come true and they are far from home at the moment as the tumor was found on their winter trip south. 4:30am wake up call to try and beat the Ft Lauderdale traffic and make the 2-3 hour drive to have the therapy and then back to the boat...another 2-3 hour drive. Prayers for Rudder and my dear friend Butch are what I ask. The support is as important as anything I can raise to help them financially...so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers for me. Thank you.

PS. Rudder is a Border Collie and hands down THE smartest dog I have ever met..it is scary sometimes how much he understands...and I honestly can say he is smarter than some humans I have met!!!

The older I get and the longer my hair grows the more of my Pops I see in me

Sketchbooks, where I drew on trips and in urban areas. In sadness and joy. Getting and giving

I’ve probably mentioned everything that I could describe in words in the first northern lights post about this spectacular nature show so instead of focusing on that in this post I will tell you a funny story about me photographing the northern lights two weeks ago.

I’ve been wanting to capture this on camera for quite a while now and I’ve done a fair amount of research into the appropriate exposure times asking how intense does the light get and so on. About a month before the trip I also decided to invest in a new tripod going for a really nice Gitzo carbon tripod and magnesium head with which I’m very happy. The northern lights would be a perfect test for the tripod so I happily packed it in my checked-in bags thinking I’ll get some killer, stable shots!

We arrive to Oslo, from Dubai, via Doha and after hanging around the baggage belt for an hour or so we get told that our luggage never made it. To complement this great news we also get told that the luggage cannot be found in the system and that Qatar Airways, the airline we flew there does not have flights to Oslo until only 2 days later. We head to the hotel in Oslo, trying to make alternate plans for the next 3 days of snowboarding (as all our snow gear was also checked-in), when later in the evening we get a call from the airport telling us that the luggage was found and further to that, Qatar Airways was clever enough to send it with a flight to Copenhagen and then from there get it transferred to a short flight to Oslo. It should be with us by the time we get to the hotel in the ski resort. Great! Problem solved! But wait, the story doesn’t finish here…

Three days later we get to Tromsø and I start carrying the tripod attached to my bag in the event that we stay late in town and the northern lights start showing up. This doesn’t happen in the first night and for the second day, we’re about to leave for the overnight camp to wait for the lights when I suddenly look at my tripod, look at my camera and realize that I have left the tripod plate in Dubai attached to my back-up camera! It’s very difficult to describe my feelings at that particular moment, but I’m sure you can guess.

As a result, all my northern lights images were taken by carefully balancing the camera on bags, snow or any rocks that I could find. I guess the moral of this story is, make the best of what you have with you and if everything else fails, just enjoy the show. :)

A NF&D brakeman waves the power from a westbound freight back to its train at Lawrenceville, VA on April 16, 1979. Some things you never forget. The train had just made a set off on the track on the far side of the power. The track was so bad that the wheels were sinking into the ground and the units pitching in opposite directions so badly that the drawheads were binding. I learned, from a distance, just how bad the track could get and the train not derail!

Ruby washing off the salt before going to the pool before going back to the sea, before going back to the pool, yeah you get..., and on and on and on.

BNSF 8776 leads a string of coal down the grade in Colorado Springs, CO.

If you read the description in my previous upload, you know I was dealing with ice and snow build up on my wheels making my car vibrate something fierce if I got up to about 50mph. Not wanting to endure the shaking or risk causing damage to my vehicle, I decided to minimize my travels. The closest I could get and still have some scenery was right here in the parking lot of the southern trailhead of the New Santa Fe Trail. While this scene looks rural and out there, it's really not. Directly behind me is a major 4-lane road and to my right is Interstate 25 and accompanying businesses and restaurants, but the lens gives the impression that you're out in rural, pristine Colorado. Shhhh, don't tell anybody!

The New Santa Fe Trail, as its name suggests, is a trail that follows the old ATSF roadbed between this spot and Palmer Lake, CO. Once the ATSF was ripped up, the Joint Line became a single-track main south of Palmer Lake. If you start here and walk north, you will have gained about 1,200' of elevation. I haven't made the hike, but I've been on parts of the trail and it's beautiful. Plus, there are trains!
