More Gelli plate monoprints from early 2016.
Gelli monotype on paper
The botanicals/fish spines are made by rolling ink/paint on the plate, pressing the botanical or other
item onto the plate, and then lifting, then putting paper on the plate and pressing to transfer.
5 X 7 inches (printed area)
A Gelli plate is a commerically made gelatin-type plate for monoprint/monotyping that makes it very very easy to pull prints without a press. I got one in January of 2016 and had loads of fun playing with different techniques. You can google for more info on Gelli printing, this link looks pretty good: keetonsonline.wordpress.com/2013/05/16/all-about-gelli-pl...

Gelli fun: acrylics on paper.
I just needed an evening of art last night. Took out the gelli plate and made 21 prints. Some are done. Some need work.
Yes it's an addiction, haha.

I did some floral prints today on the gel plate. I gathered some plants and brought them into the house. To do a gel plate floral, you first ink up the plate with the colors you want, lay the plants on the plate, and make a print. This gives you a negative. You then take the plants off the plate and make another print to make a positive. I was surprised by how much detail showed up in the positives. Image is about 6x6 inches (15x15 cm).

Today I tried making marks with my fingernail and a metal stick in a rolled out slab of Play Doh and using it as a stamp on a gel plate. It is an alternative to using modeling clay which is a bit stiffer. The top image shows what happens when you use the stamp to remove paint from the plate by stamping into a layer of wet paint and the bottom image shows what happens if you paint the surface of the stamp and then stamp it onto the blank plate. After my samples dried, I painted over them with orange paint. After that dried, I brushed on clear fluid medium, put my paper down, weighted it with books, and let it dry for 30 minutes before pulling the print. This works really well to pull all the paint off the gel plate. Both of these are really small 2.25x1.5 inches (5.7x3.8 cm).
The point of an experiment is not to be successful but to find out about a process.
This weekend I pulled out the Gelli Plate again and did some more art journal backgrounds and prints. Blogged here:
These ATC-sized (2.5" x 3.5") inspiration cards were made by me for a series of swaps on swapbot. The first photo is the front of the card, the second is the back. I've been really enjoying creating these miniature pieces of art.
Gelli print, rubber stamps, glitter, Ranger Glossy Accents, Prismacolor pencils/odorless mineral spirits, Smooches gold ink, embossing powder.

Then. we got out the gelli-plate and played.

I’m testing a variety of ways to create texture and variation by scraping back layers and blotting with crumpled up wax paper. I painted layers on the plate using opaque acrylic texturing the colors while they were still wet, letting the layer dry, and then painting the next layer working my way back from the foreground to the background, brown first, then green, then orange, and finally the blue and white sky. After the last layer dried, I brushed on some Golden GAC 100 clear, glossy acrylic primer and extender, put the paper down, weighted it with books and let it dry for 30 minutes and pulled the print. Image is about 6x4.5 inches (15.2x11.5 cm).
