So we went to the Ritterfest in Potsdam (ritter being German for knight) and it was like one of the American Renaissance Faires about which I've heard so much for so many years. It takes the level of geekdom of our Western Australian Society for Creative Anachronisms and adds superoctane. These nerds are seriously pumped up, living half in and half out of a semi-delusional state reenacting the middle ages that owes nothing to man-made pharmaceuticals (thought: I think I've been reading too much Neal Stephenson). The level of detail and, to be fair, skill shown by these many dudes (and dudettes, or hell, lords and ladies or whatever) was really impressive; and on the whole it was done with a light sense of humour. The Viking in the foreground (this troupe had come from Russia for the weekend) engaged in a little light headbutt competition with their spangenhelms that's quite different from the head-in-butt I'm used to from medieval reenactionists (?) back home and online from the US -- guys who would earnestly try to argue what it was like to stand in a Viking scilburh (shield wall) wearing a chainmail coat and with a sword and shield because they have fashioned their own coat of armour out of washing machine pieces and a length of iron they stole from a Westrail train yard . . . Maybe you get the picture. It was a very cool day, lots of bratwursts were conquered by the glorious company of Baron Varren von Fremantle and and Lady Attila "Alice" ni hEochaid. I won't even mention the toys -- medieval weapons made from wood for kids, hand-sewn tabards and cloaks, actual carved ox horns for drinking -- that we practically there for the asking. I'm seriously contemplating a second childhood (some would say I'm already there).

GORGEOUS gown. The talent of some of the costumers out there is pretty incredible. Seen at Gallifrey One 2010.

Every year I go to "Paw*Con". It's not a real, proper convention, though; my friends and I started calling it that because, in the furry fandom, gatherings of furries tend to be "meets", "circles", or "cons". Plus, it only became "Paw*Con" when we moved it from being hosted at Rozberk's place (where we called the gathering of Macro/MIcro fans, "Roz*Con") to Milwaukee where Geemo, Seph, and Quinn live.

I've been going every year since 2001. Each year I cook for my friends, we hang out, play games, see movies, and go to restaurants all while enjoying each other's company. Seeing as the first time we did this ended just days before my father passed away, this annual gathering has taken on a larger meaning for me than (probably) most others in attendance. For me, it's an annual reminder of my "family of choice": my closest friends, no matter how far apart we are.

The road trip started on a Thursday afternoon and took almost 6 hours to drive from Minneapolis to Milwaukee. But it was worth the trip. Some time around passing Madison, I looked into my rear-view mirror, saw the sunset-touched sky, and felt a wave of relief wash over me. It was as if my stresses and troubles were fading away.

This image shows my drive through Wisconsin.
