It is obvious by its common name that Throatwort was once regarded as an important medicinal plant as a gargle for soar throat. It in reality has no medicinal value, & the belief to the contrary was due to its throat-shaped corolla which in the supernatural imaginings of the Doctrine of Signatures meant God had given the flowers this shape as a message to humanity to use it to cure throat ailments.

Conservation Concern: Green-listed in Ireland. The European population is considered to be Secure.
Identification: Medium-sized white heron, with long black legs, yellow feet, black bill and blue-grey lores, and two elongated nape-feathers in breeding plumage.
Similar Species: Unmistakable in Ireland. Great White Egret is a rare visitor from Continental Europe, but is twice the size.
Call: Rook-like hoarse 'aaah' on alighting from the ground. At colonies, hoarse hard gargling 'gulla-gulla-gulla…' often heard.
Diet: Takes a wide variety of animals including small fish, frogs, snails and insects and forages across a range of wetland habitats from lakes to flooded grassland. Often forages alone; but maybe encountered in small groups.

A series of photos with Cow Elk. I tried to include a sequence that illustrates her behaviour the day I spotted her. She spent a lot of time with her head held way up almost like she was gargling, then started thrashing the water with her front hooves. There is also a big difference in the images from when she was backlit compared to when she was frontlit.
Hey, that's what they called it. This was during Dueling Banjos, which did not feature the ace banjo player. Rather Ken was either yodelling, or gargling beer for the guitar part.

We have been in a drought for over three weeks, so I have taken to keeping the birdbath filled. Well rewarded with the antics of the local crows with everything from bathing, drinking and gargling.
A Blackthorn shrub in the nearby fields of Haccombe close of Exeter, UK. === Blackthorn, also known as 'sloe', is a small deciduous tree native to the UK and most of Europe. It is spiny and densely branched, mature trees can grow to a height of around 6-7m, and live for up to 100 years. Blackthorn, also known as 'sloe', is a small deciduous tree native to the UK and most of Europe. It is spiny and densely branched, mature trees can grow to a height of around 6-7m, and live for up to 100 years. Olive is an adorable cross-eyed tuxedo who is still adjusting to indoor life. She's quite playful once she's comfortable, and she's gotten very good at hiding in all sorts of nooks and crannies. She has the funniest meows -- it's often a high-pitched gargling sound. Someday she'll be a completely cuddly little kitty, but right now she's still hesitant to accept affection. She was the runt of the litter, so she's quite small, but has plumped out a bit since discovering how delicious wet food can be!
