Lagoa Funda is one of 7 volcanic lakes found in the highlands on the Island of Flores in the Azores. The lakes are the result of activity in one of 3 major volcanic centers. Lagoa Funda (Deep Lagoon) sits in a ~200m deep depression. The volcanic center here was active from ~3430 to 3250 years before present (BP). The activity started with Strombolian type eruptions. Later in the eruption history groundwater was invaded by the the magma. The heating and boiling of the water in contact with the magma created explosive reactions which are called phreatomagmatic eruptions. Geologically, Lagoa Funda is a maar. These geological features are broad volcanic craters formed by these explosive phreatomagmatic eruptions. The cone around the crater is formed of ash and rock particles ejected during the explosions. The resultant rock is often referred to as a pyroclastic rock. The volcanic ash is called tuff. As often happens with maars, the ones on Flores are often filled with lakes.

Church of St. Lucia

The Descatllar (Catllar) knights and the Monastery of Saint Peter of Besalú battled for rule over Abella in the Middle Ages.

The first written reference to the village of Abella dates to 1266. The church dedicated to Saint Nazarius was not documented until 1326, when a beneficiary was designated. It was already called Saint Nazari and Saint Lucia in 1367, when the bishop authorized a collection for its construction (perhaps replacing a pre-existing chapel). The current building is a single nave with no apse and slightly pointed vault. The main façade faces west and has an oeil-de-boeuf over the main door crowned by a bell tower. The door’s original hardware, which features a bolt finished in the shape of a devil’s head, has been preserved. It was restored from 199t to 1998.

Mariana - Minas Gerais - Brasil

Qual será a próxima?

In 2010, while exploring the surroundings of Mariana, we had the unfortunate experience of coming across this total disregard for nature—the Fundão dam, which five years later would collapse and cause the infamous ecological disaster.

As soon as we stopped to take this photo, an imported pickup truck with security personnel appeared, clearly intending to intimidate our photographic work.

Since the tragedy, no preventive actions have been taken regarding other dams, and no media outlet has visited the more than 400 dams in similar conditions scattered across Brazil. Which one will be next?

The Sampa public transit system is multi-modal. The rail system is at the core - t has 3 lines, 178 stations and a total length of 369 km. The Sao Paulo Metropolitan Railway is the largest urban rail system in Latin America, it transports about 7.8 million people daily and it consists of two integrated networks, the São Paulo Metrô and the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) suburban railway serving greater São Paulo.

São Paulo used to have tram lines during the first half of the 20th century, but they were eradicated due to the expansion of the bus system. (source: Wikipedia)
