Coming around base onto final - off in the distance you can make out Mt. Scenery on the island of Saba
One of the minor trials areas where sub-critical explosions were made on various radioactive materials
Looking out over the eastern extent of the Musgrave Ranges - you can't really tell but the highest peak in South Australia is visible here, Ngarutjaranya
Leveled off at 4,500' for now approaching the seasonal waters of Lake Watherstone. Because so many of the lakes in Australia are seasonal they don't show up on the VFR charts, making navigation even harder
Looking out towards the massive Lake Torrens, a seasonal salt lake. Seasonal?! It's pretty huge for a seasonal body of water
Looking out over the large south Lake Eyre which, although it is seasonal is big enough to show up on the VFR charts so this served as my first waypoint
I do not recall if these features were planned on my route or I noticed them and chose to investigate. I can't find anything on them but I did circle them. I guess out of curiosity
Once again passing Beresford Dam as I set to follow the road labeled as the Oodnadatta Track on Google Maps
Passing over the colonial settlement of Strangway/Mound Springs, back in the day this was an area rich with springs from artesian ground water
Looking northeast out across Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park as I continue to climb up through 10,000'
Stepping down to a lower altitude to better see ground features I can compare to Google Maps satellite photos to help ensure I'm not drifting too far off course
Spotting an airfield is one of the best ways to determine my position, since most are marked on charts as well as being easier to pick out on GMaps. Right next to a lake? Bonus for easier locating
Not at all sure what this is, possibly some kind of mining site, but it and the nearby airport were easy to identify on the maps so I could adjust my heading slightly
