Eared Grebe from the loon family and they are the most abundant grebe in the world, the Eared Grebe has four subspecies ranging over western North America, Central
America, Eurasia, and Africa.
These little guys can dive under and swim underwater for quite a distance before resurfacing. In fact Eared Grebes are almost entirely aquatic birds, in fact it is estimated that they swimming below the surface of the water as much as 15% of their time of the water to find food.

I'm glad we stuck around for the show at the end of this Ohio Foothills Flickr outing because we were REALLY rewarded with this larger than life sunset. The group wanted to return to this spot to photograph an abandoned barn. I'm not sure that I took any shots of the barn. I focused on the sun until it was gone.
There was a cool winding road in the shot too, but apparently the calibration between my laptop and my desktop is off because the winding road is gone now. I've heard others say that Flickr darkened their shots, but this is the first time I've had it happen to me.
This will be one of my entries into the Ohio Foothills challenge for the month of November - "Sunrises and/or Sunsets". I'm still trying to decide on my second entry.
This is one of my entries into the Ohio Foothills group's January challenge, "Mellow Yellow". The pop with the same name as the theme was the first thing that came to mind when the challenge was picked.
I decided to take a closeup of a Mello Yello bottle and use one of my iPhone camera apps, "Camera+" to add a filter effect to it. This particular filter is called "Tailfins". I also used selective color to make the label with the words the only part that was true color.

I created this card for the SSS Flickrchallenge#219. Products used are the Fresh Cut Floral Stem die and the Just a Note Die.
A few of the Ohio Foothills gang ventured to the Columbus Zoo to see the Christmas "Wildlights" on Saturday.
It was snowy and cold when we arrived. The snow left a nice dusting and the wet pavement it created made for some great colored reflections.
This is one of my favorite shots from the night. I liked the stacked trees and layered colors.
I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

This shot was taken for the Ohio Foothills group's March 2010 Challenge. The challenge topic requires matching a picture with song lyrics.
This card was created for the Club Challenge Things with Wings. I'm also entering it in the SSS Flickrchallenge #234.
Products used to create this card:
* Butterfly Blossom Die and Best Wishes Stamps and Dies from Waffle Flower.
* Blossom Field Embossing Folder and Pawsitively Saturated Ink in Morning and Twilight from Simon Says Stamp.
This trillium was one of many along the "Valley of the Ancients" path at Cave Canyon (formerly 7 Caves), which is a part of the Highlands Nature Sanctuary/Arc of Appalachia Preserve.
They were holding their annual Wildflower Pilgrimage with programs, hikes and field trips all weekend. While I waited too long to try and get a spot in one of the field trips, there were plenty of self-guided trails to take.
I checked the radar before my friend and I headed to Cave Canyon and it appeared that the rain was gone. However, that wasn't the case. Fortunately, it was just a light drizzle and the trees protected us from a lot of it.
I will be using this as one of my entries for the Ohio Foothills April Challenge - "Spring Has Sprung".
I drove past this tree on a work assignment this past summer and didn't have the chance to stop for photos. I knew I just had to return. It took me longer to return than planned, but the scene was well worth the wait. It was evening and the 'golden hour' rays were quite nice across the whole fall scene.
This is one of my entries into the Ohio Foothills "Trees of October" challenge this month.

We all scream for ice cream!
Area county fairs helped me scout for "neon shots" for the Ohio Foothills group's August challenge.
I actually didn't have any ice cream though. My friend and I were looking for fried cheese! Of course, we had many other things too.
That is a fact I did not know until I photographed this blue jay with his head cocked just right for the light to catch his eye.
He landed in the pine trees in the backyard and was looking for an opening to go for the bird feeder. I've had this in my "Ready to Post" folder for quite some time. It definitely fits the criteria of the Ohio Foothills May Challenge - "My Backyard".
This old home in downtown Beaver caught my attention last year when I was photographing the Beaver Oktoberfest. It was taken on the same night as the old truck in the previous photograph.
This is my second entry in the Ohio Foothills Flickr Group for the September Challenge, "Old, Busted, Broken, or Rusted".

Continuing the neon theme today makes me really want a nice tall glass of Pepsi.
Thanks to Learning Junkie for picking the Ohio Foothills August challenge subject as neon. It isn't really something I put much thought into photographing before, but does make for interesting and colorful subjects.
I liked the reflection of fair rides in the windows of this food stand.
When the Ohio Foothills contest for the month of June was announced, I had to get my shots done early since I was going on the disabled list for hip arthroscopy. I did plan ahead though and went looking in the flowers of several neighbors (with long-standing permission from them) to find insects. I lucked out by finding this cool little spider on this lily.
The photo below in the comments shows more of the lily. It is click-able if you want to see it bigger.
Four a month challenge piece. I am experimenting with adding semiprecious stones and 14k gold bezels to the twigs.
Knowing that I needed to get some house and/or cabin pictures for this month's Ohio Foothills challenge, I took a brisk walk after one of the recent rounds of snow.
As usual, the challenge was a challenge. I don't photograph a lot of houses, so I tried to think outside the box and look for different angles. The shot above is one such example.
So, this is one of two my entries for the Ohio Foothills January 2011 challenge - "House/cabin in the snow."
“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” - Luke 2:8-11
My first photographic subject when I arrived at one of my favorite birding spots was this tree's emerging leaves. I liked how they just seemed to be bursting open and uncurling. I'm not sure what kind of tree it is. Perhaps someone else can tell me? :)
Flickr is an amazing place. I have learned so much from it.
This has been posted tonight as my final entry into the Hocking Valley Photography group's April 2013 challenge.
It's the eye of the tiger
It`s the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he's watching us all
with the eye of the tiger
--- Survivor, 1982
This shot was taken for the Ohio Foothills group's March 2010 Challenge. The challenge topic requires matching a picture with song lyrics. This is my cat, Tiger.
