(Re) Discovering Flatbush was a community mapping and documentary project where teens documented that which is important, needs improvement and is changing in their Flatbush, Brooklyn neighborhood. As part of this documentation, teens photographed the neighborhood and then presented the photographs to the public, asking people to categorize them or write a response according to three questions:
• What do you like about your neighborhood?
• What need improvement in your neighborhood?
• What is changing in your neighborhood?
These categorized photos and responses were then attached to a map of Flatbush mounted on a giant canvas, in their approximate locations. By visually mapping out the places and people of value, the things in need of change, and what is already changing as a work of art, the project aims to show a clearer picture of what the neighborhood is and what it wants to be.
The project was taken to the Community Board 14 2009 Youth Conference at Brooklyn College where the CAMBA teens invited community members and other teens to contribute to a final artwork.
