This is a rather unique old fire truck, it is a circa 1980’s Van Pelt pumper that was formerly used by the Newark Fire Department in Alameda County California. P.E. Van Pelt had been working as a distributor for the Dodge Brothers when he built his first fire truck for the Oakdale, CA fire dept. This led to him forming P.E. Van Pelt Inc. in 1925 which became the largest manufacturer of fire apparatus in the western half of the United States. The company built fire trucks on a variety of commercial truck chassis as well as on their own custom chassis beginning in 1960. Van Pelt fire trucks were commonly used by a large number of fire departments in California, Oregon, Washington and other western states. Some of their models included the Custom 300 Cab-Ahead and the Hi-Ranger Firearm snorkel. The Van Pelt corporation was purchased by now defunct fire apparatus manufacturer FMC in 1978 and production of Van Pelt fire trucks continued until 1987 when the factory was closed and the name retired.

The Newark Fire Dept before being taken over by the Alameda County F.D. had several trucks that were painted either yellow or yellow with a blue stripe - which is one of my favorite apparatus color combos. I did an extensive editing job on the last 2 pics of this fire engine to show what it would look like if it had the blue stripe. One feature of note on this rig are the polished aluminum wheels. This type of wheel (or wheel covers) are normally only seen on commercial trucks sold exclusively in the European market. This is one of the few American fire trucks that I have seen with these European style wheels.

Taken, I suspect, quite early in the morning in Central New York during a visit there in April 1981, this picture shows two FDNY fire engines, plus a NYPD truck. The two fire engines are No.65 on the far side of the street and No.23 nearest to the camera. The NYPD vehicle is No.18. Any help with the type of vehicles pictured or the exact location would be much appreciated.

Despite my deep intense hatred of HTI generics I'm not totally against generic diecasts per se as long as they don't dominate a toy manufacturers line up and that they are believable.

Despite some criticism from some collectors I actually really like the new Matchbox MBX Fire Dasher which debuts in the very latest Mix 5/Case E. Styled very much along the lines of a classic American Fire Engine circa the 1950's it looks contemporary and is a great way to avoid paying license fees and the complexities of getting a casting approved. This 40/60hp Gobron-Brillié began life as a seven-seater touring car and was operated on chauffeur-driven charter trips between London and Paris by Westminster Bridge Garage. Around 1910 it was sold and converted for use as an estate fire engine and was fitted with a Merryweather Valiant steam pump. The increased weight of the fire fighting equipment led to the vehicle being fitted with stronger lorry wheels and solid tyres.

Founded by Gustav Gobron and Eugene Brillié in 1898, Gobron-Brillié was one of the best known early French car manufacturers. They were famous for the opposed piston engines which were designed by Brillié. Although he left the firm in 1903, his engines continued to be used until the early 1920s by which time the company was known as Automobiles Gobron. The last Gobron cars were built in 1930.
