A Ritsumeikan University student participating in Kyoto's Festival of Ages has her veiled straw hat tied into place before the commencement of the procession.
A few of the 12 layered robes worn by the Heian period courtiers during Kyoto's Festival of Ages :Jidai Matsuri.
The costumes of the 2000 participants are made using traditional techniques and are worth over $25 million.
During the Heian period (794-1192), the kimono, and the subtle matching of the different colored layers were considered the great arts of everyday life that revealed the character of the owner. A woman’s skill in matching colors and choosing clothes was a better guide to her character and charm than the physical features she was born with. The details about a woman’s clothing revealed her artistic sensibility, more highly valued than ethical goodness. The Heian society was “on the whole governed by style rather than by moral principles”. The layered color patterns of the "juni-hitoe" (12 layers) reflected many things including rank, seasons, directions, virtues, and elements of the earth as they related to spirits of nature. The multiple layers also helped in staying warm in winter. Eventually, sumptuary laws of the Edo Period standardized the number of layers to five.

A particpant in Kyoto's Festival of Ages, a Heian period lady in waiting.
The festival was first held in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100 year anniversary of Kyoto becoming the Imperial capital, and to raise Kyoto's morale after the loss of the capital and Imperial Court to Tokyo in 1868. The 2,000 participants in the procession wear period costumes representing styles from throughout Kyoto's history, beginning with the modernized soldiers of the Meiji era, corresponding with the end of the Kyoto capital in 1868, back to the founding of the capital with characters from the Heian period.
The costumes, authentic even in their traditional production, are valued at over $25 million.
Not my photo. This is from the Barbie 1999 Special 40th Anniversary Edition calendar.
These girls are using the accessories from the BMR Final Touches accessories packs that came out in 1997.
The model on the far right is a repainted doll that is also featured in the Barbie 2000 calendar in September.
Masayo as Lady Shizuka. You can see her in full maiko mode here.
Lady Shizuka, a famed Kyoto dancer of the late 12th century, who was the lover of the hero Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune. Hers is a sad story. Yoshitsune was a brilliant Genji general in the Gempei War (1180-1185) fought between the great families of the Heike and the Genji. His success, however, earned him the distrust of his half-brother, Yoritomo, the leader of the Genji. In 1185, Yoritomo forced his half-brother to flee and live like an outlaw.
Four years later facing capture and certain execution, Yoshitsune committed suicide. Shizuka, pregnant with his child, was captured by Yoritomo. Reportedly, she danced for him and so charmed him that Yoritomo spared her life and that of her unborn child only if it was a girl. Unfortunately, the baby turned out to be a boy and was soon put to death so it would not grow to manhood and seek vengeance for its father.

All of us who have been brides, or witnessed a friend or family member in the last moments of preparation know how it feels.....the butterflies, heart pounding, that rush of emotion that you cant contain. It is in these moments as a sprouting photographer that I feel lucky to do what I do. In this particular moment I could feel the pressure building, then when the bride finally succumbed & looked at the camera with tears it becomes a moment that you are priviliged to be able to capture.
