Art by Fernando Botero, 'Danseurs', 2000
The hotel's lobby is a hive of activity with a 10ft bronze sculpture of a cat by sculptor Fernando Botero. It leads onto the library,
No(!)... this is not a Trojan Horse! So, rest assured, your virus scanner will not have a problem with this photo. This sculpture is made by Fernando Botero Angulo. He is a Colombian figurative artist. His works features a figurative style, characterized by an exaggerated and disproportionate volume. Some people call it "Boterismo". Botero is globally acknowledged for his ‘Horse’ sculptures, which are located in several international locations, and are landmark works of art that draw in thousands of visitors.
One of Botero's Horses 'lives' in the old Terminal (T2) at Aeropuerto de Barcleona; that's Barcelona's international airport. This spot has become the traditional meeting point in T2. It is an imposing figure that welcome's travelers as they enter main departure hall. Although it's difficult to miss, many passengers, tourists and visitors seem to ignore its presence and just walk right past the sculpture without stopping to take note of this impressive sculpture. Luckily not everyone... like yours truly. And the funny thing is, that the general interest in this sculpture peaked quiet impressively while I was making this pano. I had to wait several times before I could continue my sequence of photos(12), as people crossed my line of fire to make their own picture... grrrrrrrr!
The most striking aspect of this sculpture is it's exaggerated and very corpulent proportions. Most representations of horses emphasize the slender- or skinniness and speed of this animal. Fernando Botero on the other hand has chosen to portrait a powerful workhorse with muscular, almost giant-like dimensions. The color and dimensions also add to the 'mythical air'.
So, when you arrive at the airport, don´t just walk by this magnificent horse. Take a moment to examine it and leave a sugar lump or a carrot!
About this photo:
This pano consists of 12 individual hand-held photos. The initial merge was carried out by using Photoshop Merge (CS4). Due to the rather difficult roof structure of the T2 departure hall, I had to manually fix several alignment issues. After that I adjusted some color toning and brightness problems. Partly by adding an extra layer (on top of the 14 I already had) and using the HRD tool of Photomatix. This layer has a an occupancy of 28%. Last but not least, I added a High Pass filter layer set at 10pixels to enhance the sharpness. This layer has an occupancy of 56%; just enough to enhance the lines.
This pano has a range of 196 degrees. The original photo is 10.751 x 4898.
That's all folks!

Celebrate Life!
Kunsthal
Rotterdam, 2016
This summer Kunsthal Rotterdam is proud to present a large-scale retrospective of the world-famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero (1932). This selection from Botero’s own collection provides a panorama of the artist’s personal favorites from his considerable oeuvre. ‘Botero: Celebrate Life!’ will exhibit almost a hundred paintings, sketches and pastels as well as a few sculptures, including the enormous eye-catcher ‘Caballo’, Botero’s famous sculpture of a horse.
Visitors will be able to see paintings of life in Latin America based on reminiscences from his youth, and reproductions of classical masters in the recognizable Botero style. The bull-fight and the circus are also featured in these works. Botero’s art is full of Latin American life. The gigantic, inflated bodies and objects appear weightless in spite of their volume, which sometimes even seems to make them look as if they are floating. This volume is a recurrent feature in Botero’s work and gives his art an exuberance that can be comical or moving. The series of female Santas, inspired by the iconic images of female saints, is remarkable. Botero represents them as worldly heroines with meaningful accessories such as a bible or candle, putting their halo in sharp contrast with their clothing and posture.
Latin American life
'Botero: Celebrate Life!' shows how Fernando Botero creates a magical world full of characters and scenes from daily life, of which politics and religion form an important part. Although his work appears at first sight to be airy and light-hearted, the violent history of his native country Colombia can be felt. His origin and background have influenced Botero profoundly, which finds expression directly in his works of the president, executions and weeping widows, and indirectly in his paintings of people partying, dancing with expressionless faces under the light of naked light bulbs.
Homage to the Old Masters
Fernando Botero is a multi-faceted artist who draws on both the Latin American tradition and the history of European art. He pays homage to famous works by such Old Masters as Diego Velázquez, Jan van Eyck and Piero della Francesca. The works are a tribute to the artists whom he studied for years and an ode to the techniques, craftsmanship and aesthetics of the Old Masters. Religion is one of Botero’s favorite themes. He comments on it satirically in paintings of nuns, cardinals and popes. Other themes in his work try to capture the magic of everyday life in Latin America. For example, his images of bull-fights include not only the matador, but also the singers, musicians, dancers and various members of the bull-fighter’s family. His still-lifes show the fruits and beverages of the South American continent with their brilliant colors and popular delicacies. And in his paintings of the circus we can recognize the comical and absurd postures in which not only the constantly recurring volume but also the use of color are highly determinant elements.

Known worldwide, the reputation of Harry’s Bar is well established and its history is unbelievable. Giuseppe Cipriani, creator and soul on the bar, was a passionate man. Born in 1900, this great humanist traveled a lot and worked in the biggest hotels in Europe. One night, at the bar of the Europe Hotel where he was a barman, he met Harry Pickering, a young disillusioned and wealthy American and lent him 10.000 liras. A few months later, Pickering gave him his money back, with interests! With those 40.000 liras, Giuseppe opened Harry’s Bar. A legend was born. The biggest artists then frequented this legendary bar: Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Truman Capote, Georges Braque, Peggy Guggenheim… The most renowned drinker has been Ernest Hemingway who had an appointed table for many years. Giuseppe Cipriani also invented a famous cocktail in Harry’s Bar: the Bellini, made of Prosecco (Italian champagne), mashed white peaches and a pinch of sugar, served ice cold. Following the success of his bar and its unique atmosphere, he also opened the Cipriani restaurant and the Cipriani Hotel.

Fernando Botero Angulo is a Colombian figurative artist, self-titled "the most Colombian of Colombian artists" early on, coming to prominence when he won the first prize at the Salón de Artistas Colombianos in 1958. His work includes still-lifes and landscapes, but Botero tends to primarily focus on situational portraiture. His paintings and sculptures are united by their proportionally exaggerated, or "fat" figures, as he once referred to them. Botero explains his use of these "large people", as they are often called by critics, or obese figures and forms thus: "An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it."
Botero is an abstract artist in the most fundamental sense of the word, choosing what colors, shapes, and proportions to use based on intuitive aesthetic thinking. Though he currently spends only one month a year in Colombia, he considers himself the "most Colombian artist living" due to his insulation from the international trends of the art world. Botero gained considerable attention in 2005 for his Abu Ghraib collection, which began as an idea he had on a plane, finally culminating in more than 85 paintings and 100 drawings. The Circus collection followed in 2008, with 20 works of oil and watercolor. In an interview promoting his Circus collection, Botero said: "After all this, I always return to the simplest things: still lifes."

I'm obviously improving on getting the focus right with stationary objects anyway! It has also become evident that I should have a 'hands' set.......
This is a glimpse of the female figure, from two twenty foot tall sculptures standing either side of the elevators, on the ground floor entrance of the Time Warner Building at Columbus Circle.
The sculptor, Botero, has established a reputation for his rendering of very generously proportioned men and women, in both painting and sculpture. I was pleasantly surprised to see that two anatomically correct, but enormous nude figures depicting 'Adam & Eve' were tolerated, in what I had perhaps erroneously considered might be a conservative country, with respect to the frank portrayal of nudity in public art..
I'd also just like to say thanks to the folk from the NYC Social Group on flickr, who were so helpful in the run up to our arrival and during the stay there. In particular Lasadh in the run up to AND throughout the whole trip but also, Aaron Edwards before we arrived, and amg2000, Harry J Bizzarro, RubyMae, Simon Pride for joining us for a flickr-walk in the drizzle at Brooklyn's Greenwood Cemetery, and on our last evening. Finally, on our last day our completely chance encounter with NYCArthur who on our last morning before flying home, spotted us taking photographs, wandered over and said... "Do you know of flickr?"! :)
Velvia & B&W still to come!
