By creating a piece with no arms and legs, Botero is connecting with famous armless sculptures from the past, such as the Venus de Milo. Most sculpture's missing parts are due to damage suffered to them, but Botero's torso, is armless and legless by design. This form allows the viewer to focus on the torso's chiseled chest and back which are profoundly defined compared to his other more corpulent works. Botero once said, "In art, as long as you have ideas and think, you are bound to deform nature. Art is deformation."
