This butterfly is our largest fritillary and gets its name from the beautiful streaks of silver found on the underside of the wings. The bright orange male is quite distinctive as it flies powerfully along woodland rides, pausing only briefly to feed or investigate anything with an orange hue that could be a potential mate. The male has four distinctive black veins on its forewings that contain special “androconial” scales that are used in courtship. These veins are known as “sex brands”! The female is paler than the male, has rounder wings and more-prominent spots.
Last weekend the feeders were in great demand. Here two gold finches and a pine siskin have perches but a nuthatch and another pine siskin are in flight, anxious to get at some seed.

The Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) feeding one of it's recently fledged chicks. A common woodland and garden bird, also seen along hedgerows and in most places with trees and bushes.
Unfortunatley, this was taken in very poor light, but we don't have control of the weather, and why oh why didn't they move to the right, where there was a lovely green background!

After you have fixed your outdoor cats, set up a feeding station for them. The feeding station can be made out of a rubbermade tote, and will keep the food safe from the elements.
A woman feeding the ducks and geese at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. It's ironic to find so much life and vitality in a place supposedly reserved for the dead.
Junior eats about every 75min during the day and dad seems to be the one doing most of the feeding. So far his favorite foods seem to be frogs and cicadas.
