Gannet - Morus Bassanus

Northern gannets are the largest seabirds in the North Atlantic, having a wingspan of up to 2 metres (6.6 ft).

Gannets are colonial breeders on islands and coasts, normally laying a single egg which is chalky blue in colour. They lack brood patches so use their webbed feet to warm the eggs. It takes five years for gannets to reach maturity. First-year birds are completely black, and subsequent sub-adult plumages show increasing amounts of white.

The most important nesting ground for northern gannets is the United Kingdom with about two thirds of the world's population. These live mainly in Scotland, including the Shetland Isles. The rest of the world's population is divided between Canada, Ireland, Faroe Islands and Iceland, with small numbers in France, the Channel Islands, Norway and a single colony in Germany on Heligoland.

The biggest northern gannet colony is on Scotland's Bass Rock; in 2014, this colony contained some 75,000 pairs. Sulasgeir off the coast of the Isle of Lewis, St. Kilda, Grassholm in Pembrokeshire, Bempton Cliffs (as seen here) in East Yorkshire, Sceilig Bheag, Ireland and Bonaventure Island, Quebec are also important northern gannet breeding sites.

Gannets hunt fish by diving into the sea from a height and pursuing their prey underwater. having a number of adaptations which enable them to do this:

no external nostrils, they are located inside the mouth instead;

air sacs in the face and chest under the skin which act like bubble wrapping, cushioning the impact with the water;

positioning of the eyes far enough forward on the face for binocular vision, allowing them to judge distances accurately.

They can dive from a heights of up to 30 metres (98 ft), achieving speeds of 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) as they strike the water, enabling them to catch fish much deeper than most airborne birds.

Organizing my feeds! About time, too. This is after.

I loved the fact that my nephew Sebastian is having one bottle feed a day. So lovely to sit, relax and enjoy this bundle of gorgeousness for that time. Love love love this little one!

They let you feed the orphan lambs, Sam was too nervous to try at first but Tanith threw herself into the activity with gusto! Sam did manage to do it, but I wasn't able to take a picture of her :(

This Perigeuex shopkeeper was standing in her doorway feeding an abandoned hedgehog while her dog, Doudou, sat on the pavement making sure no one came too close

This was one of the shots I got of the buffalo... Not very pleasant surroundings because as you can see their feeding trough is where the water collects and as a consequence they are walking in mud.. It is my understanding that they are raised for slaughter for the meat...

Every summer we have lots of young birds around. Fun time to feed them with the family.

Rest area on the I-17 on the way back to Phoenix, Arizona.

We were supposed to get only a light dusting of snow but it's up to around 3-4" so far and counting. I'd forgotten what a great shelter the table itself made on the deck but Lynda remembered and set feed out in an old water dish. There's also a board next to the house protected by the overhang that gets lots of visitors. I keep trying to catch a shot of the varied species that congregate together - this and the next are the best so far but it seems more crowded before I get the camera in place.

Hundreds of birds hanging around in Osaka castle Park

I came across 20-30 vultures feasting on the body of a deer. They seemed too excited about their meal to worry about me, although several did fly up to perch on a tree branch to keep watch.

Knowing that some viewers will be sensitive, I'll keep the majority of the deer's body out of what I post. But, I went away, amazed by the sheer number of these large birds, and by the absence of fear while I was present.
