Most of the books shown on this shelf are travel-related, books I've bought while travelling, or books about writing. All my other books - and there are many! - are packed up in boxes due to a lack of space at my current residence.
There are also three mementos from past overseas trips on this shelf - a sleeping cat enscribed with spiral triskeles from Mont Saint-Michel, Lower Normandy (France); a plastic, pyramid-shaped, gold glitter-filled 'snow-dome' with a black Pharaonic cat inside it from the Khan el Khalili, Cairo (Egypt); and a small statue of a woman in a voluminous traditional robe carved from beautifully burled thuja wood from Essaouira (Morocco). Plus various shells I have picked up on my weekly walks along the beach.
And the velour penguin? Well, that's a whole other story... ;)

A few years back I started sponsoring a child in Chile. Lauren and I get letters every few months, and it's always great.

thanks for looking!
It's strange when I think about the fact that I first came out here to work for Upward Bound at Keene State in the summer of 2005. This upcoming summer with be my seventh New England summer. It's strange how quickly time goes by.
This picture is of the entry way to Appian Way here on campus. Originally Appian Way was a street open to traffic. As the college began to grow grow it would eventually come to own both sides of this street. The street was closed to traffic, paved with concrete instead of asphalt, and is the main thoroughfare for campus foot traffic. On either side of entry way to Appian way there are brick pilliars connected by this wrought iron sign.

Found a great shot for the photo of the day and got to harass a coworker in the process!
FebPhotoADay: Money
I think this would look much nicer with a 100 spot. ;)
“I'd like to have money. And I'd like to be a good writer. These two can come together, and I hope they will, but if that's too adorable, I'd rather have money.”
― Dorothy Parker
For this challenge, I tried lots of different subjects, my boyfriends hands, holding his iPad, my hands, holding a cup of coffee, my hands while painting my nails. None of the results convinced me, so I decided to take a break and finish a letter to my grandmother which I started writing the day before. In between the writing, I played around with my camera and as I checked the results, I immediately knew, this was my picture for today's challenge.
Three of my favourite pairs of shoes.
The colourful embroidered shoes with the ankle straps in the foreground were bargained for in the main souk in Essaouira, Morocco. The guy I bought them from would not lower the price on them because they were the last pair in black and he could tell how much I wanted them.
The pretty pink ruffled heels in the middle were bought at Citystars, Cairo, Egypt. I managed to successfully navigate the deadly cobblestones of Abu Tig marina in these - in the dark and after several mojitos at Smuggler's Pub - with no damage to myself or the shoes.
The kooky, spotted heels in the background were bought in a shop on the rue De Rivoli in Paris, France, last year. I worshipped these shoes in the window of the shop for four weeks until, two days before I left, I finally succumbed and bought them. I'm still wearing them in, so they haven't had a proper outing yet.
the yellow and white button, is my FAVORITE button in the whole world. i do not keep it with the others; it stays in my jewelry box. it is a button off of the winter coat my mom made for me when i was 5 or 6 years old. i loved that coat with my whole heart. sadly, i do not have any pictures of it.....just this button.
I've taken to enjoying burbon on the rocks (or sometimes not on the rocks) as the adult beverage of my choice. I've seen a lot of pictures of drinks, and I wanted to take something that was traditional but different.
I made a soft-box several months ago (a soft box is a lighting device that provides for soft distributed lighting) and I thought that it might be the perfect tool for this photo. I set the soft box on a chair, placed a narrow pane of glass on top of it, and then placed the drink on the glass. This gave me the look of lighting the drink from the bottom.

What I'm listening to....
Really, this comes down to what's going on in my life on any given day. I have a fairly broad selection of music at my fingertips, and sometimes I need it to pick me up, settle me down, or sometimes I just need something to fill the gaps in my day.
Some of my fondest memories of growing up were centred around music. It was a part of our lives, even if we weren't a musical family in the strictest sense. I hung on to a lot of the nostalgic sounds of my childhood (I've heard that at the age of 14 we first start to develop our "own" musical preferences) -- maybe because they remind me of my father, or maybe because they're just stuck there.
Anyway...here's what I'm listening to today. Something new and local (Joel Plaskett's "Through & Through & Through"), something recommended to me by a friend (Miike Snow's "Animal"), and something for my father (Harry Chapin's "Mr. Tanner"). The last selection brings me back to being five years old again, standing barefoot on our orange living room shag carpet, helping my dad thread the reel-to-reel and trying on his headphones which were far too big for my head, but which made me feel grown up.
