The Extra Mile - Points of Light Volunteer Pathway, dedicated to the spirit of service in America, is a series of bas-relief medallions in the sidewalk forming a one-mile walking path that begins at the corner of 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, goes north on 15th to G Street and continues right on G Street. The privately funded initiative of the Points of Light Institute debuted in 2005 with twenty initial honorees, each of whom is memorialized with a likeness and a brief biography, cast in bronze. he line of markers will eventually go to 11th Street, head south for a block to F Street, west along F Street to 15th and back to the beginning, when future honorees are selected by a nine-member panel.

 

Edgar "Daddy" Allen (1862-1937) was inducted to the Extra Mile on October 14, 2005. Allen founded Easter Seals in 1919. Inspired by his vision and passion, Easter Seals creates solutions that change lives and assures that children and adults with disabilities can live with equality, dignity and independence.

Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was inducted to the Extra Mile on October 14, 2005. As an influential African American, living in a time of escalating segregation, Washington negotiated a course between accomodation and progress in advocating greater civil rights for blacks. His philosophy of "request" not "protest" allowed him to gain the respect of Presidents and politicians, but sometimes alienated thoe of his own race. Washington believed education was a cornerstone for the advancement of blacks and his efforts to raise money for his belowed Tuskegee Institute helped secure its well deserved reputation as a leading education institution for African Americans.

W.D. Boyce (1858-1929) was inducted to the Extra Mile on October 14, 2005. Inspired by the "good turn" of an unknown English scout, Boyce brought scouting to the United States. The Boy Scouts of America made it possible for millions of young Americans to benefit from its value-based educational program.

Ernest K. Coulter (1871-1932) was inducted to the Extra Mile on October 14, 2005. Coulter's enduring contribution is the founding, in 1904, of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America youth mentoring movement. As a social welfare activist, journalist, lecturer, author, lawyer and advocate for children's rights, he offered a lifetime of service to others.

Dr. Edgar J. Helms (1863-1942) was inducted to the Extra Mile on October 14, 2005. Helms founded Goodwill Industries in 1902, an innovative system whereby goodwill collects used items from the community and sells them to Goodwill stores to fund its employment, training and job palacement programs aimed at helping people with disabilities and disadvantages participate fully in society.
