Ernest Bevin was laid up here on 29 May 1978.
Scanned from a slide taken by the late Lyndon Rowe, now in my collection.
Just a few doors down from the home of Gertrude Stein, the apartment that Ernest Hemingway described as "“one of the best rooms in the finest museums except there was a big fireplace and it was warm and comfortable and they gave you good things to eat and tea and natural distilled liquors made from purple plums, yellow plums or wild raspberries,” I saw this note in a window.
There was something very thrilling about walking along the same path from Gertrude Stein's salon to the Luxembourg Gardens, following the same footsteps that Matisse, Picasso, Cezanne, Hemingway, Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald took to go for a walk in the park, and then there was this note.

In Ernest Shackleton's Cape Royds Hut, Antarctica used in his 1908 Expedition during which he got within 92 miles of the South Pole but had to turn back back because one of his men was seriously ill. If it hadn't been for that the South Pole would have been his and not Amundsens who got there three years later. The hut is more or less how he left it.
