Dough recipes tell you to knead the dough until the surface is smooth and elastic. I probably could have kneaded it a little bit more to get it even smoother, but I decided this was close enough.

In 1876, Walt Whitman observed farmers walking their cows across Buttermilk Channel at low tide from Brooklyn to Governors Island. What was once a simple act of walking in the 19th century has become an impossible feat by a complex web of infrastructure, economics and politics, subways, buses, and ferries. With this historic act in mind, we will explore concepts of bridges and crossings on Governors Island. Using simple materials we will imagine ways to span distances, connect points, and otherwise cast lines that make two into one. Part history, part drawing, architecture and exercise, this way will recast the island's recreation space into a river of bridges.

The elastic waistband on a pair of Hawkeye's jeans.

Dropped right outside my house , this one looks ancient but so probably been sitting there for some time.

Copying everyone's Anthropologie copies... I was running out of ideas and almost counted each elastic separately to get 5 things instead of 1!

Strong, comfortable elastic hand chain. The beads are thread on a strong elastic cord. That makes them comfortable to wear, as they follow your hands movement. All my Jewelry is unique and one of a kind.

Elastic City Education Director Ben Weber invites young participants and their loved ones to become a living typewriter that creates cooperative public poetry, letter-by-letter.

Each participant will take on the role of a letter of the alphabet, tagging their personal character onto huge sheets of paper using large custom-made stamps.

The living typewriter will experiment with graffiti, poetry and propaganda using teamwork, improvisation and nonverbal communication. Hop to it!

This way holds 30 people (this includes parents) and is presented in partnership with the Staten Island Museum.
