Tools come to us in all sorts of ways - often making for haphazard collection. Here's how I make sense of the sockets I've come across in my life. See the full blog post at Push The Other Button

The drill was spinning rather quickly, so I was surprised that you can still make out some detail in the drill bit.

Random Road Shots - On My Toad Again

On my toad again,

Just can't wait to be on my toad again,

Feels so good to ride my little hopping friend,

And I can't wait to be on my toad again.

On my toad again,

Hoppin' places where we've never been,

Seein' faces we may never see again

And I can't wait to be on my toad again.

On my toad again,

Hippy hopping down the highway.

We're the best of friends,

Insisting that the world keep hoppin' our way,

and our way.

On my toad again,

Just can't wait to be on my toad again,

Feels so good to ride my little hopping friend,

And I can't wait to be on my toad again.

Totally not an attempt at building a Rock Raiders thing, these three little MOCs are something if expect to be in a set from a mining themed line, with each set centering around different characters. Eli here has a plasma-blade armed, rock cutting ATV, a quick scouting buggy, and a fold out stand with armour and tools.

The big wheels are from Star Diamond, and the slitted cheese slopes are from Kre-O.

Lifetime Dream # 23 of my list of 155: I will own a full standing Rigid drill press for my workshop. It will have a build-in light feature for safety, so I can always see what I am drilling. I will have a full, professional set of drill bits with it, so the bits I use will glide through the material I am cutting.

Completed On: December 2, 2006

I have said it before, I was always taught that there is a right tool for the right job, and if you’re going to buy something that you will use a lot and for a long time- spend the money on whatever it is. I use that mantra when I buy guitars and tools. I love working with wood and with my hands, and a lot of the projects that I have to work on involve drilling. Sure I could get the same job done with a regular drill, but for consistency and ease, like the mantra says: right tool for the right job.

I still lament the loss of my workshop, but I will have a nice big one someday. And when that day comes, this drill press will be center stage for the projects that I have to build!

The customer included a set of brass barrels he had made for the guns, all I needed to do was trim the crescents from the kit's moulded barrels and use a 1.5mm drillbit to fit them in place

Here's my first pinhole image.

What I used to make my dSLR pinhole bodycap. See notes on image for more info.

I made a paper template in AutoCad to locate center easily. I cut the brass square, just the right size so the corners would contact the edge inside the body cap. This made it self centering!

I cut the .001" thick brass shim stock using the utility knife. I have a handle for holding things like small drills, deburring tools, and needles. I placed a new sewing needle into that handle.

I placed the needle in the center of the brass (using paper template) and dimpled the brass. I removed the template, put the needle back on the brass, and then spun the brass under the needle, applying a small amount of pressure.

I checked occasionally if a hole had started. The first one I did, I cut the hole using the knife point which made a .015-.020 inch hole. The resulting image was TOO soft!

Using the needle, I stopped as soon as the hole appeared. It appears to be about .005-.008 thick, measuring as well as I can using the calipers and the loupe.

I used the sandpaper to smooth the burr on the hole after I "drilled it".

I used a 3/8" drill to make a hole int he center of the bodycap, well, near the center at least. I wanted to use a 1/2" hole, but that would have meant dragging out the 1/2" corded drill...and I am lazy.

I used electrical tap to tape the brass shim pinhole into the cap after cleaning upthe hole in the cap. All done except taking a picture!

I love old tools and old timey things. Especially old time power tools. Back in the day powertools were so streamlined, sleek and shiny ...they looked like P-51 Mustangs or a Lockheed Electra. They looked like they should be powered by a nuclear reactor inside. I suppose it was inevitable, since they were designed by and used by guys who came back from WWII designed and used these power tools. And in those days America was a "can-do" place and it was reflected in the streamlined, Chrysler building-esque design of everything in the Atomic Age.

This drill-bit fit the hex head screws I got. This was invaluable.

HS Steel vs. Hardened Steel == Burned Drill Bit. This 3/32" diameter drill bit did not survive contact with a harder metal, burning and mushrooming the cutting end instead.
