He's become my favorite
photo subject, outside of my
beamish son, Joshua. Doc is
pictured many times throughout this stream,
as those who have seen these photos know well.
He's a homeless man who lives behind a Sears
store in North Hollywood, California. Keeps all his
belongings in two big garbage bags there. He's a
sweet man, a kind man, though I think he straddles
more than one world at a time. Here he's pictured out
behind the big rose-hued Sears in the heat of a June
day in Los Angeles. He was dressed all in brown -
a brown t-shirt and brown pants. Last time I saw him
he was all in black. Not sure where he gets his
clothes or his haircut. He spends a lot of his time
walking between his home behind the Sears, though
that alleyway there in which I have photographed him,
and to the intersection of Victory Boulevard &
Laurel Canyon, where a friend of his, also homeless,
is always standing, asking quietly for change,
smoking cigarettes and gazing out with red, sad eyes.
Doc and he share cigarettes and money. One day I
was with my son and we saw them together and
spoke to Doc - his friend doesn't talk, but does nod
to acknowledge that he knows me when I pass by -
and Doc was handing him a couple of dollars, and
he was handing Doc some cigarettes.
First time I met Doc he spoke about wanting to
get his mother out of the grave. Lately he's been talking
about his sister. About how much he needs to find her,
and get her help.
