Monday, 6 April 2015: Chhokang Paro (3030 m) to Chumling (2385 m)

Two treats to start the day, before we’d even left Chhokang Paro: excellent cafetiere coffee at the Tsum Valley Cafe (chairs in the courtyard of a family house near to Namgyal’s) and a group of monkeys sunning them selves on rocks in the fields on the path out of the village.

Retracing our steps back down the Tsum Valley, Anthony and Hazel took the direct path to Chumling (चुम्लिंग) with Tsering, while Val, Namgyal and I took a more roundabout route distributing LED solar lights to homes in the remote communities of Gho, Renjam / Rainjam and Domje (Tumje / तुम्जे). Tampa and saag at the final farmhouse - very welcome. Tea offered everywhere.

Our path entailed lots of ups and downs, stretches along the banks of the Sardi Khola / Syar Khola / Tsum Chu river and rising back up to terraced fields and suspension bridges traversing the high steep slopes of the hills above.

Calling in at the gompa in Domje we met a Tibetan nun on her way to Mu who'd crossed the 5000m Nangpa La on her journey from Tibet.

Lazy afternoon in Chumling, and opportunity to enjoy this relatively large village in the sunshine and to gaze across the valley at Ripchet, a long village clinging to a narrow ledge.

Dinner in the weaving rooms again, and a thank you dance and song from the village ladies.

A few drops of rain - in KTM the forecast had been for bad weather across the whole of Nepal on 7/8 April. We were keeping our fingers crossed....

Industrial Ethernet master blocks are available with EtherNet/IP or PROFINET protocols. EtherNet/IP masters support daisy-chain connections with a built-in switch as well as support the Device Level Ring (DLR) topology for easier troubleshooting. PROFINET blocks support Fast Start UP (FSU) as well as the Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) for easy setup right out of the box. Both master devices have easy-to-use, lockable pushbutton displays for quick setup and provide webpages for configuration or diagnostics purposes.

At the time, I wasn't clear why we were distributing medicines. The missionaries had brought quite a bit. I'm guessing they were distributing anti-worm medicines. I simply gave a helping hand.

The white birch antler is Inonotus obliquus. The sclerotia presents a tumor shape (sterile mass), which is mainly distributed in the northern hemisphere, such as Russia and Finland, at 40 ° ~ 50 ° north latitude, and in Heilongjiang and Jilin in China. The organic chaga mushroom is a folk medicinal fungus in Russia. Its effective components have attracted extensive attention of researchers in the United States, Japan and other countries. According to the preliminary research, Chaga contains Inonotus obliquus alcohol, oxidized triterpenoids, lanosterol, suppository acid, folic acid derivatives, aromatic vanillic acid, syringic acid, etc. The organic chaga mushroom powder has the effects of anti-cancer, lowering blood pressure, lowering blood sugar and reviving immunity.

Organic Chaga Benefits

Treat diabetes

The treatment of diabetes patients by ultrafine powder of Betula platyphylla showed that the whole blood viscosity and plasma viscosity decreased after treatment, fibrinogen, hematocrit and erythrocyte aggregation index were significantly lower than before treatment. The cure rate of diabetes powder by inoborus powder from Komsomlshi pharmaceutical company in Russia is 93%.

Anticancer effect

It has obvious inhibitory effect on a variety of tumor cells (such as breast cancer, lip cancer, gastric cancer, subauricular adenocarcinoma, lung cancer, skin cancer, rectal cancer and Hawkins lymphoma). Prevent cancer cell metastasis and recurrence and enhance immune ability. It is also used to cooperate with radiotherapy and chemotherapy of patients with malignant tumors to enhance the tolerance of patients and reduce toxic and side effects.

Prevention and treatment of AIDS

It has obvious inhibitory effect on AIDS. E1 mekkawy et al. (1998) reported that the triterpenoids ganoderiolf and ganodermanontriol could significantly inhibit the cytopathic effect of HIV LD on MT-4 cells; The fruiting bodies and the active components, especially triterpenoids, of the white birch antler can inhibit the proliferation of HIV in vitro; The anti HIV effect of white birch antler may be related to its inhibition of HIV reverse transcriptase and protease activities. This effect needs to be further confirmed by in vivo administration.

Anti aging, inhibiting infectious viruses and preventing colds

The decline of immune function is one of the most obvious characteristics of aging. In immune organs, the function of B cells regulated by thymus and bone marrow and their ability to secrete epidemic globulin decreased. These changes lead to the weakening of the immune function of the middle-aged and old people against external antigens and the reduction of the ability to monitor the mutated antigens. Modern research has proved that the decline of immune function caused by aging can be delayed or partially recovered. Among many measures and drugs to prevent and treat the decline of immune function, traditional Chinese medicine for strengthening and tonifying has been proved to be effective. White birch antler can remove free radicals in the body, protect cells, prolong the division algebra of passage cells, improve cell life and promote metabolism. Therefore, it can effectively delay aging and prolong life if taken for a long time.

New Jersey State Troopers distributed 580 coats to students of Elizabeth Public Schools during their 6th Annual Coat Drive on January 10.

The donation, collection, and distribution of coats to Elizabeth Public Schools students was made possible through the tremendous assistance and collaboration with Elizabeth Public Schools team members, Wakefern, Elizabeth Police Department, Elizabeth Fire Department, Union County Sheriff's Department, Union County Department of Corrections, Hispanic Law Enforcement Association of Union County, and At Heart's Length, along with community friends and families. Retail companies that assisted with the coat drive included Old Navy stores at the Mills at Jersey Gardens in Elizabeth, Hamilton Marketplace in Hamilton, and Aviation Plaza in Linden as well as Sears and Boscov’s of Woodbridge Center Mall in Woodbridge.

The annual community outreach event has been a small gesture of the memorable impact troopers strive to make towards those they proudly serve and is reflective of their mindset to bridge the gap between those in uniform and communities that have minimal interaction with the New Jersey State Police.

While the winter weather is often unpredictable, one thing that remains certain is people needing winter coats to make it through the cold. Through their generosity and desire to help the greater community, the New Jersey State Troopers and their partners continue to help Elizabeth Public Schools students stay warm each year.

Tragedy at Six Bells

By David John Withers, Brynmawr

My father worked in the colliery all his life and I sort of followed him into the pit. I went to work in Six Bells Colliery at 17 years of age.

When I first went on the 0.18 coal face as a collier's helper I was introduced to my 'batty' Reggie Poe who showed me the tools we were using and two chalk marks 15 yards apart on the coal face. This was our working place, 15 yards long by 4-foot-6 deep by 5 feet high. I thought 'bloody hell' - it seemed a huge amount of coal to shift.

Although the other coal faces in our district were more modern with hydraulic roof supports, we were still using the older friction posts and linked bars. I've still got the scars where one of the bars came down on me!

We had quite a few problems with gas on the 0.18 coal face and the dust was killing. At times the conveyor would start up and you couldn't see each other until the dust settled down.

As boys we often refused to go onto the face because of the amounts of dust there - being youngsters we stuck together even when the officials threatened to send us home. It wasn't much of a threat as I was only earning about £6 odd!

I had been working about two years when the explosion happened. I was working on the 0.18 face at Six Bells on the 'turning shift' and arrived at the colliery on the bus to see the place in turmoil and heard that an explosion had happened. As the explosion had occurred at our place of work, we offered to go down and help as we knew the place, but the Rescue Brigade had it under control and wouldn't let us go down.

It's hard to say my feelings about it all. We knew there was gas there and they said a spark had set it off. I had mostly enjoyed the colliery up to then. I remember four of the men who died - I used to give them snuff with powdered bark mixed in as a joke - there was a good spirit amongst the men at the pit.

Once the explosion had happened it put me off. I finished and I put my notice in soon after. I was too young to lose my life in the colliery. If I had been working the day shift that week it would have been me. The explosion opened my eyes to the dangers and I went into the construction industry instead - I was always good with my hands. The pit made me grow up.

The deaths of 45 men killed 50 years ago in a colliery explosion have been remembered with a service at the site.

A gas explosion ripped through the Six Bells colliery near Abertillery, Blaenau Gwent at 10.45am on 28 June 1960.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, led a service of remembrance at the site.

He also unveiled a memorial to the tragedy, a 20m high sculpture of a miner by Sebastian Boyesen.

Hizmet Relief distributes hot meals in Haiti after the earthquake.

Hizmet Relief sent 119 volunteers to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Hizmet Relief was the first organization to distribute food after the earthquake. Volunteers distributed hot meals to 1000 people each day for 30 days. Because of the earthquake many people were left homeless. Hizmet Relief distributed tents, blankets and clothes.

15 doctors attended this vital campaign and gave medical help to the injured. Hizmet Relief strongly believes that the impact moment is the time when the help is most needed but in order to help people in need for a long duration of time futuristic projects should be brought to life. Hizmet Relief and Kimse Yok Mu built a medical clinic. The clinic is planned to be in operation in the next year.

IOM distributes laundry soap at the UNMISS base in Malakal, close to the POC site.

On May 26, the Jiyan Foundation distributed water-powered air conditioners to the 3,120 families living inside Khanke camp for IDPs. At outside temperatures already approaching 40°C, the delivery of these air coolers is a welcome relief; especially elderly and sick persons are under threat from the extreme conditions.

The Iranian-made air coolers work with less than one ampere, as compared to the 16 ampere that are needed to power conventional air conditioners. Additionally, temperatures remain lower even for some time after the cooler has gone off. This is important in a camp where demand for energy often exceeds the supply and power outages are a daily occurrence. In the coming months, temperatures will rise to even higher levels, making every stay inside the tents without cooling unbearable.

Some 30,000 Yazidi from the Sinjar region live in Khanke camp, and many more in the small village of Khanke, near Duhok.

The distribution of the air coolers was made possible through financial support by Misereor, a German charity organisation.

Mao enjoyed comfort. Various cushions were distributed around the house and he would choose a different one every so often. His favourite spot was next to the front door where he could track who came in and out. A minor problem was that he could sleep so deeply that people could enter and leave and Mao wouldn't stir at all.

In this picture we stayed at an hotel which welcomed dogs and provided him with this magnificent wicker basket and cushion. The little emperor on his throne!

------

(August 8, 2005) Eleni and I revisited Whatley Manor, the hotel where this picture of Mao was taken. We brought some of Mao's ashes to scatter over the ground where he strolled that original weekend in February. The days were crisp and bright. Mao's thick coat always kept him warm. Mostly he walked but very occasionally he would canter.

I liked the idea of leaving some of him here because it is not far from where he spent the majority of his life. The countryside is typically English, green, hilly with beautiful trees. Mao will be happy here.

Eleni sent me pictures of rescue Pekes awaiting adoption in America (Northeast Pekingese Rescue). They are amazing little creatures. I feel as though I want to have every one.
