I love the way that each pane of glass in this building, which is alongside the River Thames in London, has a different distortion on the view it reflects. There are some great patterns in each individual little box!

It is hard to fold the fabric on a concave edge, because it pulls and stretches it .This way you can distort the grain line of the fabric. What I do is slide the stick along the cardboard edge in short back and fourth motions, while holding the stick close to the table surface. Its like you are holding a ruler and the stick is your pen, and you are drawing a line along ruler's edge. The difference is that you press the stick towards the cardboard edge, and you do it piece by piece rather than in one long motion. This way you'll do a minimal damage to the grain-line of the fabric.

Of course you can skip all that stick issue, and just clip the seam allowances and go strait away to the iron. Maybe it will work for just fine :) For me, it didn't! I needed to "bake" that cardboard shape before the clipping in order to get a more precise finish.

One more week and many things to organize.

I am becoming excited! Yeah!

I modified the Distance Estimator of Subblue's Mandelbulb example using the formulas in Knighty's post: this picture is a Menger sponge with a simple rotation around the z-axis.

This could have been a lot of fun to explore, if not Pixel Bender kept crashing on me when using GPU rendering. Grrr. I had to turn to CPU rendering, which takes several minutes for a single frame. Much too slow for proper exploration. Perhaps it is time to try out QShaderEditor or Tacitus.

Having completely no free time makes me feel mesmerizing of the days I had so much free time to spend on taking photographs and still didn't. I feel so bad about it but I'm so excited for the things to come in the future!

This is how I feel as this school year goes by. Nothing is what it used to be in the past.

For this week's Get Pushed challenge, I was paired with the lovely JeezyDeezy . Please go check out her uplifting photostream!

Her challenge to me was the following:

"Hi Amanda!

I'm so excited that we've been paired together, a fellow Canon girlie - yahoo! My first DSLR was a Rebel XS, and I loved loved loved that camera! I checked out some of your exif data and it looks like you've got 18-300mm covered by various lenses, yes? That's great!

It was hard for me to come up with a challenge for you because you have a fairly diverse photostream, you are not afraid to try new things, and you've been doing this push thing for a few weeks now.

I have, however, noticed a lack of wide open landscapes in your collection. You love getting nice and cosy with bugs, frogs and flowers, but for this challenge, I'd like you to pull back - wayyyyy back.

I also want you to have a subject in your photo. But let's not have him/her/it take up very much space. Like only a corner, or the bottom 1/7th of the photo, for example.

Now the kicker - you must add either a reflection or a distortion of some sort.

Oh, one more thing - please have a splash of red somewhere in the shot.

Now.... I understand you may be under the throes of a certain hurricane this week, and, although I have very little storm experience, I'm pretty sure this could mean you would be reluctant to take your precious camera outdoors, and understandably so. So I would like to offer you the option of meeting the above challenge in an indoor space - but, it will have to be a wide open space. An airplane hangar comes to mind, but of course, I'm sure you can come up with something creative on your own.

To recap:

1. Wide open landscape shot

2. Small subject

3. Reflection or distortion (but not just a shadow)

4. Splash of red.

The rest is up to you, can't wait to see what you come up with!"

Yikes! She caught my fear.... "the big picture." I've been so reliant on getting up close and personal with a photographic subject to make photos more interesting. And of course she had to add a few extra things in there to make things a little more difficult.

So... here's what I came up with. The day after the hurricane, my husband and I went driving. We didn't have any power, and needed to charge our phones in the car. We drove to Farmville, VA (our old college stomping grounds) and found ourselves at Briery Creek Lake. I dressed myself in a red skirt before we left thinking there might be a photo opportunity, but I'm not sure if this is a big enough splash of red. I took quite a few, but I wasn't able to check them out on the computer until a few days ago.

Turns out, this is the best I came up with. I was pretty unimpressed with the water... I was hoping for more of a reflection, but I guess the time of day we were there wasn't reflection time.

I asked Julie if it would be okay to use editing to create a distortion, and she agreed that would be okay. So, I threw it in the GIMP and distorted the view a bit. I'm not exactly sure if that's what she had in mind, but I liked it better than layering.

Also... I'm adding an alternate in the comments. This is a photo I took of a guy fishing at the local park. He was wearing white, so I GIMP-ed him up to make it look like he had on red. I feel like it looked painted on, which is why it's not my first choice. What I do like about this one is the reflection!

Thank you, Julie for my fantastic challenge. I hope it meets your expectations!
