The first project project in my monthly uploadings.

I've found that these are reallly fun to do! I shot more than 9 in hopes of having a perfect 10, but some didn't work out as planned.

The idea sprouted from Sophomore Seminar, when I was totally stuck with "When I Dream." I tried to switch my idea to do "Close to Home" but didn't want the letter grade drop. I still shot when I went home the next weekend, just to see what I could shoot.

Out came the hockney-esques.

I took Kitty to PetSmart this morning to get her nails trimmed. Afterward I came home and Darek dropped me off at Bob & Max's on his way to work. Bob, Max & I had lunch at The Chicken Ranch before heading to the Palm Springs Art Museum to see the David Hockney exhibit. I was a fun day.

This title of this 1960 work is Latin for "Work conquers all," which was the motto on the coat of arms for the City of Bradford. The Fondation Louis Vuitton is hosting an excellent retrospective of Hockney's works through August 31, 2025.

Recently I visited the L.A Louver to see an exhibition of artworks by David Hockney, called “Painting and Photography”. It was actually my first time for both and particularly because I had been interested in seeing some of Hockney’s paintings. I became familiar with Hockney’s work during an art class where one assignment was to select an artist, research him, and give a presentation before the class. And in doing some research I found that Hockney’s work and personal history had been quite interesting, and you can’t really judge a book by its cover. As well, he had been working on developing a phone app, so it was likely that new works would not be on the horizon, I’d figured. But as it turns out Hockney is quite a workaholic and has produced quite a few works in recent years.

So once I had the pleasure of visiting the gallery and seeing the new works up close I found some parallels between his concepts and the same art class in which I had learned about perspective before doing research on Hockney. As I studied his “photographic drawings” I could not help but notice how the lines of perspective had indeed been changed. I knew from experience that if these works had been submitted for critique the instructor would have said things like, “Wait, this is wrong…and this here..see this?...Yeah, go ahead and pull up a chair…Okay, this line should be more like…and this edge should be parallel to this line…and then this…etc., etc.”

I considered all of this and what makes these photographic drawings really interesting is that the rearranged perspectives are not exactly nonsensical. Hockney’s rearrangement gives the drawings a “fisheye” quality, similar to a television where the front is convex and the back is narrowed. I had a discussion with a woman who was viewing the exhibit and she was saying she did not get what a “photographic drawing” is. I told her I imagined it was probably a matter of using some kind of software to “drag & drop” each item into arrangement. As an artist and user of software you can’t help but notice the capabilities of such functions. I think that may also be a part of what the artist was saying about developing phone apps and working with tablets. It is a matter of using technology to explore creativity and design.
