We had the mother of all electircal storms tonight and I spent 3 hours with me ole mate Kelv just staring at it (oh, and taking photos of it as well). It was just incredible. Reminds you just how small us humans really are when it comes to mother nature...

Just look what the little people get up to while you're at work! Idea shamelessly stolen from pikebubbles Now, where are my keyboard wipes?

(Sorry for yet another plug - Don't worry - I am running out of plugs...!)

Do you own a DSLR camera?

Do you want to learn loads more about Light Painting?

I am delighted to announce the release of my very first E-book.

A step-by-step guide to Light Painting

After five years of spinning lights around, I have finally managed to find the time to fulfil what has been a personal goal of mine for some time, writing a book about a subject that I love: Light Painting.

www.davidgilliver.com/photography/

You do not need to be an experienced photographer to get the hang of and enjoy Light Painting. The main aim of my E-book is to try to save anyone who is new to Light Painting a heap of time by highlighting some of the key considerations that should be made such as:

*****Getting your head around Light Painting*****

We take a closer look at the general concept of Light Painting: How does it work? What effects can you create?

*****Camera Settings*****

I discuss the DSLR camera settings that work best

*****Light Painting Tools*****

We take a look at a variety of portable light sources and look at examples of Light Paintings that can be created using each of them

*****Light Painting Creations (including ‘How to create the perfect Orb’)*****

We take a closer look at several of the more popular forms of Light Painting: Orbs, Ribbons, Physiograms, Domes and Star Trails. I describe in complete detail with photographic illustrations and descriptions how you set about making each one. Every year I receive lots of emails from people asking me how I create my Orbs – this topic is covered in great detail

*****The Full Monty*****

Putting everything into practice. Join me on a night photography Light Painting shoot where we look at the entire creative process from start to finish

I have not held anything back, as I wanted to share everything with you that I have learned over the past five years. This book is truly a labour of love and I hope you find it incredibly helpful.

This E-book is 55 pages long, costs only £12 and is absolutely crammed with useful information and helpful tips.

As always, thanks for showing an interest in me and my work and the very best of luck with your Light Painting journey.

David

She has been incredibly alert right from the off, and her eyes follow us everywhere we go which I am told is very rare for a new born. At least we know she has great eyesight :O)

To Write Love On Her Arms

TWLOHA is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery.

Earlier this year I created a body of work especially for TWLOHA. By adding light to darkness (by way of Light Painting), I hope my photography conveys this important message: It is never truly dark.

I find the concept of being present in each of the photographs yet remaining invisible quite incredible. I have an undeniable presence in each photograph yet there is no evidence that I was there other than the light sculptures that have been left behind.

Some individuals will associate nighttime with negativity, as natural light has faded, leaving everything in darkness. However, as my photography proves at the end of each long exposure, there is still an element of natural light there, proving that it is never truly dark.

You can find out more about TWLOHA by visiting their website www.TWLOHA.com and you can also find out more about this particular body of work here: twloha.com/blog/it-never-truly-dark

I am donating 50% of all proceeds raised through the sale of my Light Painting E-book from the following link to TWLOHA: www.davidgilliver.com/photography/twloha/

It is never truly dark.

I'm so happy it's the summer!

Leaving in a few hours to pick up my youngest brother and his now fiancé from the airport after an incredible 3 week holiday in Europe.

I am so, so happy for them both. He met his soon-to-be-wife in mid 2020 and she met Mum as his love interest initially. I'll never forget Mum coming into my room afterwards to tell me that she had such a good feeling about her and that she felt she really could be 'it' for him. Like so many things, she was absolutely right.

Congratulations little bro. You deserve the world <3

Well, I can't let Jules have all the fun can I? Especially after all the help he gave me in the winter with these physiograms...so this one is definitely for you buddy!

Nice sunny days and dark nights at the moment so going to try and make use of both.

Another weekend of study for me with some big assessments due in the next few weeks but I thought I'd jump on Flickr before bed to post this one from my shoot with David Gilliver a few months back.

My next shoot is in the first weekend of December, which coincides with the end of Term 2 for my Dip. of Digital Marketing course. It's no accident that I've waited until then to shoot. Shooting for us is generally a full day event when you factor in makeup, travel times and the shoot itself and I can't afford that kind of time off with Uni right now - so I guess you'll all just have to wait :)

Congratulations to my sister and bro-in-law for the birth of their beautiful baby son, Oliver.

He is quite simply perfect.

An incredibly proud Uncle.

A more distant shot of the tree I shot last night. It is absolutely freezing out there tonight! Not so sure about my decision to keep the selective colour in this one so I also saved a full B&W alternative just in case. Hmmm...thoughts? Also some good news tonight - the Huffington Post have again taken an interest in my work and have run an article on it - I can't thank them enough. Sadly the conditions were pretty dreadful outside tonight. I headed out with a friend to Saints Bay with the intention of doing some light painting next to the coast, but the sky was horrible! Totally flat, and there was alot of moisture in the air so I ended up just choosing something pretty simple for tonight. There was a lovely looking house hidden in the middle of the trees on top of this hill overlooking the sea. They must have an absolutely stunning view from up there!

That's month 1 down of project 366, and now just 11 more to go! Come on all you 366'ers...we can do this!

Project: MEMORY TOWER

I can finally share some very exciting news:

Just last week I was able to secure a venue for an exhibition of a body of my work that I created inside Guernsey's only tower block - Cour du Parc. The exhibition will take place in November and I cannot wait!

Thanks to Ross Weston for assisting me inside the 'Tower of Terror' - It was both exciting and terrifying in equal measure!

For full details on the exhibition, please head on over to Ormerland, the details are now all on there:

I was telling my stepdad a few weeks ago about something that happened in April this year on our last weekend trip up to Mathoura to see Dad. My stepdad thought it was so funny that I thought I'd share it with you all.

Everyone has different beliefs about the afterlife. I choose to believe our loved ones are still with us in spirit form because I'd personally prefer that over them not existing in any form. I have no proof of this, of course, just a known confirmation bias that I will always be looking for evidence of something I hope is true.

In April this year, I had what I think has been the biggest sign that Mum is still around. Again, I'm fully aware she may not be but if she's not, it's one hell of a coincidence.

My youngest brother, his girlfriend, our close family friend and I were visiting Dad and his (ugh) partner that weekend. Dad had started giving us things from the house that he wanted us to keep. Some of the things he gave me were 4 boxes of family photos, along with assorted random bits of paper that were mostly certificates, old media articles, company documents etc. I only glanced through them at the time but I went through many of the old photos with Dad and we learnt more about him. I always loved listening to Dad tell stories from his past. As a creative person, I was always able to easily visualise the situations he'd describe. These memories will always be some of my favourite times with him.

At separate times over the weekend Dad had pulled both of my youngest brother and I aside and asked us to please look in on his partner afterwards. That he worried about her and would like to know that she was being checked up on. For many reasons neither of us were thrilled with this request, though we (of course) had expected it. My youngest brother told me later he wrote it off pretty quickly. He has plenty of good reasons not to want to keep in contact with her and I fully supported and understood his decision. Mistakes of the past should never be brought into your future if you can help it.

I struggled a bit more after our conversation. I'm sure it's pretty clear by now if you've been reading my posts for awhile that I/we couldn't stand her. She has always been that nuisance that we had to tolerate for Dad but we never enjoyed being around her. We found her insipid, small minded and incredibly selfish. She was/is a terrible mother and, unsurprisingly, a largely absent grandparent as well. Our family was very fortunate to have an incredible mother who was always there for her children and had an unending amount of love and support for those she adored. Also unsurprisingly, Mum always disliked Dad's partner. She felt sorry for her kids, who were always second to her own needs, and was always encouraging us to recognise how difficult her kids had it in comparison to us. We knew but, as is typical of kids, we were just relieved not to be them. As an adult, I genuinely sympathise and realise they deserved the upbringing we had as well but were simply unlucky to be born to the wrong person. I feel for them.

Anyhow, that weekend, I was agonizing over staying in touch with Dad's partner afterwards. I knew I didn't want to and I had told Dad as much but I struggled with whether it was the 'right' thing to do.

I was still thinking about this as I brought the last of the 4 boxes of family photos to my car that Saturday afternoon. The sun was out and it was slightly windy. I'd just put the last box in the car when a random piece of paper flew out and I had to chase after it to retrieve it. As I got back to the car to put this paper back into the box, I glanced down and then literally just stopped and stared at it. I couldn't believe what I was looking at. I didn't even know it existed and here it was being (accidentally) handed to me and essentially giving me the answer to my moral dilemma.

It was a letter from Mum's lawyer to Dad's lawyer during the final stages of their divorce in 1996. In it, Mum's lawyer told Dad's lawyer that if Dad's partner didn't stop harassing and abusing Mum, that Mum would have no choice but to take out a restraining order against her.

I had no idea that was even happening at the time. Mum had talked about how nasty Dad's partner was and how tacky she was when she'd turn up to my brother's basketball games in short mini skirts. We figured she had nothing else going for her and had to work with the little she had. We largely ignored her. Now it pains me to think of what Mum had to endure from her. I wish she had told us but then again, it's not like we could have hated her more.

In that instant, my mind was made up.

I used to say to Mum when she was sick that I worried about making the wrong decisions without her. She was my voice of reason and I didn't trust myself to do the right thing without the guidance I relied so heavily on her for.

I needed to see that letter. I needed a reminder, on top of all of the other evidence that had piled up over the years, of who I was dealing with. Emotion can often override logic and, as an emotional person, I had always needed Mum's input to ensure I was making the right decisions for the right reasons.

I believe Mum is still giving me her input, especially that day. It's not in the form either of us would have chosen but it's as clear-cut as I can hope for under the circumstances.

I miss you Mum.

This one just gets me right there!

What a little angel.

xxx

Another shot of Monday night's fantastic sunset taken at Port Soif.

Well it was something that Pikebubbles said that got me thinking. So thought I would see if I could grow a little Bonsi one to send him. All the concentration seemed to drain the light out of me though!!!

(taken on one exposure, no additions after the exposure. I use aperture3 as a RAW converter and will adjust levels, saturation, white balance, brightness and some minor cropping if required.)

I got greedy and wanted more! Good old lens trick was soooo much easier to do with my new tripod and head! Huge thank you to my gorgeous wife :) I have to admit though, I spent a good 45 minutes perfecting adjust the ball head so I could put the cap on, move the camera slightly and do the next dome and repeat again! Tricky to put the lens cap on in the dark without knocking zoom!

Took on some cracking advice from (Flickr usernames) Jules, Pikebubbles and Catchlight of the idea of shooting before midnight and not long after to cover 2 days at once for the 365! Please check out their photostreams, their work is guaranteed to inspire you!
