This is my homemade cucumber trellis. It is very easy to make and only costs a few dollars. It is much cheaper and stronger than store bought varieties.
This unusual sea cucumber has a long appendage, resembling a sort of strange shoehorn. Photo taken at a depth of 2658 m on the abyssal plain.

The bilimbi, Averrhoa bilimbi, L., (Oxalidaceae), is closely allied to the carambola but quite different in appearance, manner of fruiting, flavor and uses. The only strictly English names are "cucumber tree" and "tree sorrel", bestowed by the British in colonial times. "Bilimbi" is the common name in India and has become widely used. In Malaya, it is called belimbing asam, belimbing buloh, b'ling, or billing-billing. In Indonesia, it is belimbing besu, balimbing, blimbing, or blimbing wuluh; in Thailand, it is taling pling, or kaling pring.
In Haiti, it is called blimblin; in Jamaica, bimbling plum; in Cuba, it is grosella china; in El Salvador and Nicaragua, mimbro; in Costa Rica, mimbro or tiriguro; in Venezuela, vinagrillo; in Surinam and Guyana, birambi; in Argentina, pepino de Indias. To the French it is carambolier bilimbi, or cornichon des Indes. Filipinos generally call it kamias but there are about a dozen other native names.
Possibly originating on the Moluccas, Indonesia, the species is cultivated or found semi-wild throughout Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma). It is common in other Southeast Asian countries. In India, where it is usually found in gardens, the bilimbi has gone wild in the warmest regions of the country.
It is known as many different names in parts of Kerala. Irumban puli, Ilimbi, Ilumbanpuli, Chemmeen puli and Keerichakka are some among them. It is used to make squash, jam, pickles or added to fish curries.

The cucumber is not the kind you can eat. It is wild cucumber, a fast growing annual vine that climbs all over the California live oaks on my property. I have to draw it for my Asilomar job. Rattlesnake grass also grows in the understory in Asilomar.

The tendrils and vines of cucumbers are quite artistic in their structure. Don't you just love that spiral that occurs so often in nature. You can see the spiral even on the hairs on your head (if you have any hair). It is especially noticeable on a child's hair. The twisting of limbs on a tree around the trunk follow the same spiral as does the the arrangement of leaves on a stem. There are many examples in nature. The uncurling of a fern. Fibonacci's sequence. - all is intimately connected with the golden ratio.

The cucumbers vines are really producing a lot. This is the second harvest. We ate a couple with dinner, and Vince is taking a couple over to his mom's house.
Simple, light, flavorful.
1) Peel, seed and cube one large cucumber. Sprinkle with the barest amount of salt and set in a collander.
2) In the bowl of food processor puree one bunch of fresh tarragon with 1/4 c olive oil, 2 tablespoons minced shallots and one tablespoon tarragon vinegar. Puree to almost smooth but make sure stems are reduced.
3) Place cucumbers in clean dish towel and twist and squeeze out as much moisture as you can with out crushing the cucumber.
4) Mix cucumber with sauce and allow to marinate for 20 to 30 minutes before serving. Garnish with sesame seeds.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a widely cultivated plant in the gourd family Cucurbitaceae. It is a creeping vine that bears cylindrical fruits that are used as culinary vegetables. There are three main varieties of cucumber: slicing, pickling, and burpless. Within these varieties, several different cultivars have emerged. The cucumber is originally from Southern Asia, but now grows on most continents. Many different varieties are traded on the global market.
