I keep paring down my cookbook collection and then end up buying a bunch more. Nashville's library system has a great cookbook collection too, so I like checking books out and trying a few recipes here and there.
Easy and wonderful frosting, especially when you check the larder and you are out of confectioners sugar!
My mom is one of the most organized people I know. She has an assortment of cookbooks she put together from recipes she collected from friends, family, and newspapers. Next to each recipe she tried, she would write her verdict - excellent, very good, average. I think it's so brilliant, but have never managed to do a similar project. I love reading through these cookbooks - it's like a walk through my childhood.
I had to have this little cookbook because the cover is just FREAKY! Note the bunny who just appeared out of the top hat with some scarves and a glass jar full of black peppercorns, and also the gross whole fish in newspaper! Everything looks rather over-stimulated...
Thursday nights are grocery nights. I plan out my menu for the coming week, hitting my cookbooks or Cooking Light magazines for inspiration, then virtually tossing the ingredients into my FreshDirect cart online. I LOVE grocery shopping from the comfort of my own couch.
On this week's menu: Braised Beef Short Ribs (inspired by AnnieKnits' beef extravaganza), Devilish Chicken (a spicy-asian recipe from Rachael Ray's Big Orange Book) and an easy stand-by of spaghetti.
I plan our entire month of dinners in advance. It really helps with the grocery shopping and it is so much easier to know what is for dinner when we come home from work. Sometimes we have problems sticking to the set meal and end up going out to eat, but I'm proud to say that this month we haven't had a restaurant dinner once!
By the way, we're not on any special diet, but these cookbooks have some yummy recipes!
And if anyone has a great recipe we should try, hook me up.
