We used an expensive Delcom USB HID Visual Signal Indicator RGY for around USD100.

We eventually get approval to buy it. After our build lamp arrives, we find a cheap alternative using a USB Universal E-mail/Webmail/IM Notifier.

Kicking it in the evening at BlueTitan/SOA's SF HQ, Note the LavaLamps in the background. They are hooked up to the build system so that if the build fails, the red lamp switches on. If the build is succeding, the green lamp stays on.
