Andrew Shilliday presents the Desired Powers (Cognitively Robust Synthetic Characters in Digital Environments)
Here are a couple from the chart:
- Must include rigorous, declarative definitions of all the concepts central to a Theory of Mind - concepts like lying, betrayal, evil and so on.
- Cognitively Robust Synthetic Characters will know and believe things about what others know and believe and believe about ....

Computational Consciousness
Can be defined as a fully functional computational equivalent of the human mind in its higher cognitive abilities
Two approaches: piece-by-piece versus grow.
Sidenote:
Human brain is the last and grandest biological frontier,
the most complex thing we have yet discovered in our universe.

The Centre for Mental and Cognitive Health at Headley Court in Surrey, England.
A newly-refurbished greenhouse and allotment area in the grounds of the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Unit at Headley Court have been refurbished with the help of a local charity, The Queen Elizabeth Foundation, for the patients to use as part of their rehabilitation while there.
By using horticulture as occupational therapy the idea is that, from a physical point of view, patients will get used to working at different heights and levels, lifting and moving things around.
In addition, there is a cognitive benefit to this as it will enable patients to learn to ÔthinkÕ again and undertake tasks in a logical fashion.

Regular viewers will recognize some similarities to previous maps, most notably, income, population density, education and high-speed Internet access.
This map was created by the Martin Prosperity Institute, in conjunction with Lumosity - a cognitive neuroscience research & development firm with ties to USCF, Harvard, Stanford, Berkely, and others, that builds software tools for improving brain health and performance.
The metric developed by Lumos Labs was based on cognitive training and tracking software "Lumosity" seeks to track “brain performance” or cognitive capacity of cities in a more direct way by measuring the cognitive performance of more than one million users in the United States who use their games against their location using IP geolocation software.
The analysis controlled for age, so the reason the cities score well is not simply because they have many young people. Instead, the analysis seems to show that users living in university communities tend to perform better than users of the same age in other locations.
America’s 25 brainiest metros, according to Lumosity’s metrics:
1.) Charlottesville, VA
2.) Lafayette, IN
3.) Anchorage, AK
4.) Madison, WI
5.) San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, CA
6.) Cedar Rapids-Waterloo-Iowa City & Dubuque, IA
7.) Honolulu, HI
8.) Johnstown-Altoona, PA
9.) Champaign & Springfield-Decatur, IL
10.) Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN
11.) Boston-Manchester (MA/NH)
12.) Austin, TX
13.) Rochester, NY
14.) Gainesville, FL
15.) Fargo-Valley City, ND
16.) Lansing, MI
17.) Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-San Luis Obispo, CA
18.) Burlington-Plattsburgh (VT/NY)
19.) Pittsburgh, PA
20.) Syracuse, NY
21.) Baton Rouge, LA
22.) Columbia-Jefferson City, MO
23.) La Crosse-Eau Claire, WI
24.) Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York, PA

I have a theory that the sheer complexity of road systems, and the signs that try to explain them, make a significant contribution to traffic collisions in the city. Police report forms list "Failed to look properly" and "Failed to judge other persons path or speed" as by far the most common contributory factors. I don't think people "fail" as such, they are simply confronted by too much detail in too short a time to be able to process it all. "Cognitive overload" is a phrase that comes to mind. Driving is demanding enough already. Having to look at and act on an array of signs like this is going to be a significant distraction. Only those who already know their route and who don't need to look at the signs will be really safe.
In this picture notice the variety of colours, shapes and positions of relevant signs. Also notice the glaring distraction presented by the fly posted advertisement in the middle of the major route sign.
For cyclists, note how obscure the two most relevant signs are. One says "End of bus lane", another indicates a shared pedestrian/cycle path. On my first approach I saw neither of them. My attention was firmly on the traffic and on the road layout. I think I can see 11 separate signs in this picture.

There is no such thing as a no sale call. A sale is made on every call you make: either you sell the clients some stock or they sell you a reason they can’t.¹ It's all about bucks, kid. The rest is conversation.² You want to be greedy when others are fearful. You want to be fearful when others are greedy. It's that simple.³ When good news hits the front page of the NY Times, sell.⁴

Learning
Usually, cognitive architectures are based on a number of different modules
Example: Hybrid System
[ see Hybrid intelligent system approach. ]
Obviously, coherence problems and inconsistencies can occur, in particular, in hybrid systems.
In hybrid architectures, two main questions can be asked:
- On what level should learning be implemented?
- What are plausible strategies in order to resolve inconsistencies?
Idea of this talk: Use occuring inconsistencies as a mechnaism (trigger) of learning.
He was quite dynamic speaker, in motion, this was about the best photo I could get.
This is a pretty extensive AI research team.

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) offers a helpful treatment for people who are experiencing the effects of mild to moderate dementia.
What is CST?
Many experts working in dementia care and treatment have recognised the positive effect of these psycho-social sessions. The CST experience is often seen to be as effective as medication. However, CST usually produces the most positive impact on participants who used it in combination with medicine.
CST is offered as a seven week therapy which provides practical and social stimulation to help reduce the harmful effects caused by dementia. This treatment is shown to benefit the quality of life and cognition while remaining cost-effective.
Benefits of CST for dementia patients:
CST offers improved cognition and quality of life
CST is shown to perform as well as some anti-dementia drugs
It is more cost-effective than some medication
The benefits can offer continued value for a period following the sessions
Participants enjoy contributing, learning and socialising
Is CST cost effective?
The therapy was evaluated as cost-effective when measured in terms of quality of life for the individuals taking part.
The most cost-effective results came from the effect on those who received anti-dementia medication in combination with CST. The effectiveness was below the £20,00 recommended by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
Combining the quality of life improvements with health care costs, CST could save the NHS a net benefit of £54.9 million per year.
NICE-SCIE guidelines recommended that people who were diagnosed with mild to moderate dementia should have the opportunity to participate in a CST programme. It is currently offered by NHS trusts throughout the UK.
