By emphasising the dual location of perception and cognition Overlaid Realities merges the sensory experience of the museum with the environment of the ‘other’, hosting participatory relationships, whilst converging interdependent processes.

I made a collage to describe the word cognition. I found a picture of Einstein and copy and pasted it into photo shop. I made a gradient background of black and gray. Once I copy and pasted Einstein's head onto my background i had to use the magic wand tool to get rid of the excess around his head that I did not want. Then i wrote the definition of cognition and made the font color green. I also typed the word cognition and added blending options. I created a drop shadow, outer glow, and bevel and emboss. I also added a picture of a brain that i also used the magic wand tool on.

Sketch note from "Thinking, fast and slow" (2011)

Oppenheimer's Garden 2013

A large scale installation at the Gamut Gallery for the Liminal Cognition Exhibition.

The name Oppenheimer's Garden references Oppenheimer's research on the atomic bomb and the mushroom cloud produced by the nuclear reaction. This installation displays a variety of clouds composed of mushroom's which literally translates this devastating phenomenon, but conceptually offers a contradictory display as the cloud's appear to be living organisms.

I've utilized mushroom's in my previous work as a metaphor for the life force, from it's vitality and inability to be constrained in Heisenberg's Garden, to it's nature with energy in Albert's Garden and now in it's relation to water in Oppenheimer's Garden. All living organisms are mostly composed of water, condensed clouds if you will. Oppenheimer's Garden is in essence, a translation of the life force juxtaposed with the greatest form of destruction we've yet come to know.

Who am I to scan the holy stars, to witness the settings of the sun, to have the service of the spring for my survival? How shall I ever reciprocate for breathing, thinking, for sight and hearing, for love and dreaming? Some delicate cognition weans us then from mistaking the benignity of the world for ownerlessness, its symbolic living for dull order.

The tree squirrel – This animal along with the white tailed deer are two studies of contrasts that are difficult to explain. Looking at their development and adaptation to their environment, few other species can show equal abilities for survival. Squirrels vs bird feeders will always demonstrate that the squirrel will find a way to get around any human invention that is designed to keep them off the feeders. Any victory by humans will prove temporary as the draw of food creates mental ability far beyond existing capabilities. The same can be said about the deer population in this country. Feed a deer all year long so they are conditioned to return to the same location every day for food and a hunter has created a sure “kill” on opening day. Get up well before sunup, face the cold weather, climb into a deer stand, cover yourself in deer scent, and do not move or make a sound. We all know that the deer will not come to that location on opening day, or any other day of hunting season. As soon as the season closes, they return for food.

Here is the paradox – Put a paved road anywhere near these two animals and all adaptation is gone. Instinct, intellect and sanity have no influence on what they will do when confronted with a moving vehicle at the same time they want to cross the road.

I have read that a good portion of the stimulus money has been set aside to study this problem in the name of fixing global warming and energy consumption improvements. The program has been given the name CFCA. Pronounced CIF-CA, it stands for “Cash for clunker animals”. Bring in the remains of any squirrel or deer that has been killed by a vehicle on the highway and you will be compensated . The list used to include opossums as well. However, too many were waking up and walking away after they were paid for. An effort at tagging those already purchased proved that some were being turned in repeatedly. A decision was made that it would be inappropriate to call them clunkers. The IRS and TSA have both been asked to keep records of the “clunkers” to see if trends can be determined. Dragging the remains through a body scanner or metal detector has not helped. Using the extensive investigative arm of the IRS has provided several new “social programs” to be funded and BP Petroleum has been required to pay for the studies. Both agencies are hiring more employees to fill the needs of a demanding public.

Advertising agencies have followed the study with a great deal of interest. The term they use for what happens inside the mind of these animals is “Conative dissonance”. It is the feeling of discomfort when simultaneously holding two or more conflicting cognitions, ideas, beliefs, values, or emotional reactions. In a state of dissonance, a squirrel will run past a car and then turn around and run back into the path of the tires. A deer will freeze and wait to be hit. People, it has been determined, feel “disequilibrium”, frustration, hunger, dread, guilt, anger, embarrassment, anxiety, or other uncomfortable reactions. Such a condition will cause most people to “spend money”. Next time you have exercised caution at the grocery store and purchased healthy foods and then are confronted with sugar sodas, candy by the register, and cheese crackers, picture yourself as the squirrel that has just turned around and run into the path of the oncoming car! How many times has the cashier said, “do you want me to put this in a bag, or do you want to carry it out in your hand?”

One last comment, if you are feeling uncomfortable about now, eat a candy bar, stop reading, look at other pictures, or ignore this posting and you will feel better.
