Towards the end of 1914, early in World War I, disturbing rumours began to circulate that the newest German submarines were capable of a much higher surface speed than British boats, one report giving their speed at about 22 knots. The rumours were sufficiently strong to force serious consideration of the matter by the Admiralty, and at the same time consideration was given to the idea that submarines should have a high enough surface speed to be able to work with the fleet. The reports concerning the speed of the German submarines proved to be spurious, but the idea of a British submarine with a high surface speed gained ground. The immediate result of this concern was the development of the J Class, which were unique with their three shafts. Originally eight boats were planned but this was reduced to six and then increased to seven. As a result of these changes the boats originally intended to be J7 and J8 were renumbered in April 1915 as J3 and J4 respectively.

J7's submerged displacement of 1,760 tons was 60 tons less than that of her sister boats. Her conning tower was located further aft and the gun was mounted in a lower position.

HMS J7 commissioned in the Royal Navy on 15 September 1917 under the command of Lieutenant Commander F.H.D. Byron RN and was allocated to a flotilla based at Blyth, Northumberland.

On 5 November 1917 J7 departed Blyth for her first patrol. Whilst on patrol in the North Sea on 6 March 1918 an enemy submarine was sighted, but J7 was unable to attack and the enemy passed from sight.

The submarine was under refit during April and May 1918 at Walker Naval Yard on the River Tyne. She sailed for patrol on 25 May and evaded a U-boat attack the same day.

On 10 July an enemy submarine was sighted and both vessels dived. Shortly after a sighting was made of an enemy submarine on the surface, going away, J7 surfaced, challenged and opened fire. The enemy dived. An enemy submarine was sighted on 23 July, but J7 was unable to attack and the enemy disappeared.

On 5 October 1918 J7 dived to intercept a reported submarine, but broke off the search without contact.

The boat was at sea when the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918. She returned to Blyth on 15 November. On 19 February 1919 she proceeded to Jarrow.

Following the conclusion of hostilities in World War I, the Admiralty in 1918 presented the six remaining boats of the J Class to the Australian Government - J6 had been sunk in error in 1918 by a British ship. All the submarines commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy at Portsmouth on 25 March 1919, as tenders to the submarine depot ship HMAS Platypus, J7 being the senior boat, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Oswald E. Hallifax DSO RN.

The beam tubes were removed from all six J Class submarines before they sailed for Australia. The tubes were despatched separately to Garden Island. The reasons given for the removal were that the beam tubes were not a success and that increased accommodation was required.

HMS Submarine J7 off the River Tyne prior to sailing for Australia in February, 1919.

On 9 April 1919 Platypus and the submarines, escorted by the light cruiser HMAS Sydney, sailed from Portsmouth for Australia, their first two ports of call being Gibraltar and Valetta.

On the night of 28 April, the night before the vessels arrived at Port Said, J3's starboard main engine shaft snapped. Thus handicapped she could not keep up with the others and consequently on departure for Aden on 30 April, J3 was in tow of Sydney.

The vessels arrived at Aden on 5 May. On the same day the light cruiser HMAS Brisbane, which had left Portsmouth on 17 April, also arrived. On 7 May all the vessels sailed for Colombo. Brisbane took over the tow of J3 while Sydney took J5 in tow as that boat had also developed engine trouble. Three days after arrival at Colombo on 15 May, Brisbane sailed with J5 in tow, taking her all the way to Sydney, where they arrived on 27 June.

J3 was taken in hand at Colombo for repairs. On 31 May Sydney, J1, J2, J4 and J7 sailed for Singapore, followed on 2 June by Platypus and J3. The vessels were reunited at Singapore from where all except Sydney sailed on 18 June. Sydney sailed for Australia a few days later but did not rejoin the other vessels. On 29 June Platypus and the five submarines arrived at Thursday Island, although J7 was three hours late because of trouble with her engine lubricating system. The last call before Sydney was Brisbane, Sydney being reached on 15 July.

Having arrived in poor condition, the submarines were taken in hand at Garden Island Dockyard for refitting. After her refit was completed J7 sailed for the submarine base at Geelong, Victoria.

After uneventful service, little of which was spent at sea, J7 and her five sisters paid off into Reserve at Westernport on 12 July 1922. The boats had become victims of the worsening economic conditions of the time, coupled with their high cost of maintenance.

On 1 November 1929 J7 was sold to Morris and Watt Pty Ltd of South Melbourne. She was towed from Flinders Naval Depot, Crib Point, where she had served as a reserve source of electric power, on 4 December 1929. She was dismantled and the hull sunk in 1930 as a breakwater at the Sandringham Yacht Club, Sandringham, Port Phillip Bay, where it remain

The practice of the Middle Pillar is especially important. The Tree of Life is a tool used to categorize and organize various mystical concepts....Within Thelema, the Great Work is the spiritual endeavor aimed at realizing one's True Will and achieving a profound mystical union with Nuit, the Thelemic personification of the infinite and boundless expanse of the universe. This path, crafted by Aleister Crowley, draws inspiration from Hermetic alchemy and the Hermetic Qabalah. The cornerstone of Thelema is the Book of the Law, received by Crowley in 1904 through a communication with the entity Aiwass. This text became the central scripture, heralding a new Aeon for humanity and outlining the principles of Thelema..

A very powerful and effective daily ritual/exercise for activating the five psychic centers of the Middle Pillar in the body. In ways, it resembles the arousing of chakras, but follows the Kabbalistic pattern, and the concept of Light descending and then circulating. Each center is visualized as a sphere of colored light about six inches across one at a time, and then its God Name vibrated four times. After all five centers are established, then currents of energy are visualized rising internally from the base and then descending externally to enter again to energize the aura.

The core purpose of Thelema is twofold: to discover one's unique True Will, or life's purpose, and to attain mystical union with the universal consciousness. Crowley described the Great Work as the unification of opposing forces, be it the individual with the universal or the ego with the non-ego. The techniques to achieve these goals are collectively termed "Magick", encompassing Western ceremonial magic, meditation, Hermetic Qabalah, tarot, and yoga. In Thelema, these practices are dedicated to the worship of Nuit, the goddess of Infinite Stars and Space.

In the framework of Thelema's magical Order A∴A∴, the Great Work of the Probationer Grade involves self-knowledge, understanding the nature and powers of one's own being. Yet, Crowley emphasized that the Great Work is not confined to specific milestones; it is a continuous process. Achieving the Great Work necessitates extensive preparation, including comprehensive knowledge of the Hermetic Qabalah, disciplined meditation, and invoking spiritual entities. The pinnacle of this path lies in the discovery and manifestation of one's True Will, as expressed in the Benediction of Crowley's Gnostic Mass.Thelema is a path intended to do two interrelated things: to enable one to learn one's True Will; and to achieve union with Nuit, the Thelemic personification of the infinite and boundless expanse of the universe.[1] This unification of opposites, the individual and the universal, is reiterated by Crowley in his book Magick Without Tears:

The Great Work is the uniting of opposites. It may mean the uniting of the soul with God, of the microcosm with the macrocosm, of the female with the male, of the ego with the non-ego.[2]

The techniques for accomplishing these goals Crowley called Magick, a word he used to describe Western ceremonial magic (especially invocations and eucharistic ceremonies) supported by Buddhist meditation, Hermetic Qabalah, English Qaballa,[a] tarot, and yoga,[1] all set in the context of the worship of Nuit, the goddess of "Infinite Stars and Infinite Space".[3]

Within the system of the magical Order A∴A∴, the Great Work of the Probationer Grade is considered to be the pursuit of self-knowledge to, as Crowley said in The Confessions of Aleister Crowley, "obtain the knowledge of the nature and powers of my own being."[4] However, Crowley continues, the Great Work should also be something that is integrated into the daily life of all.[b] Although Crowley often discussed the idea of "succeeding" or "accomplishing" in the Great Work, he also recognized that the process is ongoing.[c]

The ability to accomplish the Great Work requires a great deal of preparation and effort, according to Crowley's system. The programme consists of several key elements, including a thorough knowledge of the Hermetic Qabalah (especially the Tree of Life), disciplined concentration (i.e. meditation), the development of one's body of light (in order to experience other planes) and the consistent and regular invocation of certain deities or spiritual beings ('assumption of godforms').

Within the mystical and philosophical system developed by Crowley, the core task for a practitioner is the discovery and manifestation of True Will. The realisation of this True Will is itself the Great Work, as expressed in the Benediction at the end of Crowley's Gnostic Mass, where the Priest blesses the congregation with the words:

The LORD bring you to the accomplishment of your true Wills, the Great Work, the Summum Bonum, True Wisdom and Perfect Happiness.[5]According to Crowley, there is a single definition of the purpose for ritual magick: to achieve Union with God through "the uniting of the Microcosm with the Macrocosm".[6] Since this process is so arduous, it is also acceptable to use magick to develop the self (i.e. one's body of light) or to create ideal circumstances for the Work (e.g. having access to a place in which to do ritual undisturbed). There are many kinds of magick, but the categories of ritual that are recommended by Crowley include banishing unwanted forces, various forms of invocation, and the eucharist, which "consists in taking common things, transmuting them into things divine, and consuming them".[The path of attainment is largely defined by the Tree of Life. The aspirant begins in Malkuth, which is the everyday material world of phenomena, with the ultimate goal being at Kether, the sphere of Unity with Nuit. Through various exercises and practices, the aspirant attains certain spiritual and mental states that are characterized by the various sephiroth that ascend the Tree. Crowley considered a deep understanding of the Qabalah to be essential to the Thelemite.[d][e] The practice of the Middle Pillar is especially important.[7]

The Tree of Life is a tool used to categorize and organize various mystical concepts. At its most simple level it is composed of ten spheres, or emanations, called sephiroth (sing. "sephira") which are connected by twenty-two paths. Each sephira and path is assigned various ideas, such as gods, cards of the Tarot, astrological planets and signs, elements, and so forth. The sephiroth are represented by the planets and the paths by the characters of the Hebrew alphabet, which are subdivided by the five elements, the seven classical planets, and the twelve signs of the Zodiac. Crowley's Liber 777[8] is one of the most comprehensive collections of such qabalistic correspondences.Another key element to Thelemic mysticism is the ability to concentrate. This skill has two modalities: the first is the rapid, accurate, and efficient movement of thought (which is the realm of magick) and the other is the stopping of thought altogether (which is accomplished in Yoga). In the first, it is the manipulation of all ideas into one idea, and in the second is the taking of that one thought and reducing it to nothing.[f]

Concentration is essentially the prerequisite for all sustained success, not only in spiritual practices, but in day-to-day life as well. The general program for developing concentration is borrowed almost completely from the practice of Yoga within the Hindu and Buddhist systems. Crowley gives a general overview of the techniques in two books: Eight Lectures on Yoga[10] and in the section called "Mysticism" in Magick (Book 4).Crowley referred to the 'augoeides', a Greek term for the body of light, and connected it with 'the Knowledge & Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel' associated with each human being.[12][13] He stressed that the body of light must be built up through the use of imagination, and that it must then be animated, exercised, and disciplined.[14] According to Asprem (2017):

The practice of creating a "body of light” in imagination builds on the body-image system, potentially working with alterations across all of its three modalities (perceptual, conceptual, and affective): an idealized body is produced (body-image model), new conceptual structures are attached to it (e.g., the doctrine of multiple, separable bodies), while emotional attachments of awe, dignity, and fear responses are cultivated through the performance of astral rituals and protections from "astral dangers" through the simulation of symbols and magical weapons.[14]

Crowley explains that the most important practices for developing the Body of Light are:[15]

1. The fortification of the Body of Light by the constant use of rituals, by the assumption of god-forms, and by the right use of the Eucharist. 2. The purification and consecration and exaltation of that Body by the use of rituals of invocation. 3. The education of that Body by experience. It must learn to travel on every plane; to break down every obstacle which may confront it.

According to Crowley, the role of the body of light is broader than simply being a vehicle for astral travel — he writes that it is also the storehouse of all experience.[g]

The benefit of astral travel is essentially one of education: it is akin to exploring one's own spiritual universe[h] and understanding its fundamental components so that the one can eventually master it. The general object is the "control of the Astral Plane, the ability to find one's way about it, to penetrate such sanctuaries as are guarded from the profane, [and] to make such relations with its inhabitants as may avail to acquire knowledge and power, or to command service".[16] Also, "one's apprehension of the Astral Plane must be accurate, for Angels, Archangels, and Gods are derived therefrom by analysis. One must have pure materials if one wishes to brew pure beer".[16]

Crowley believed that what was experienced during "astral travel" was not relevant in terms of what is "real" or "unreal". He thought that the only value to this practice is in the utility it provides to the practitioner.[i] He believed that the body of light is more important than simply for astral travel—that it is also the storehouse of all experiences.

Harmony in Duality: Exploring the Concept of the Middle Pillar in Esoteric Traditions... represents not just physical balance, but a profound harmony between opposing forces. This symbolic pillar represents not just physical balance, but a profound harmony between opposing forces .

Benefits of The Middle Pillar

Development of Concentration and Visualization Skills: The Middle Pillar Ritual requires sustained visualization and focused attention, helping practitioners improve their concentration skills. This heightened focus can extend to other areas of life, enhancing clarity, and mindfulness.

Alignment and Balancing of Energies: The ritual aligns the practitioner with divine energies, facilitating balance, and harmony within the individual's subtle body. This energetic alignment can foster increased spiritual and psychological equilibrium, promoting overall well-being.

Strengthening Connection with the Divine: By vibrating Divine Names, the practitioner seeks to attune to these divine energies, strengthening their connection with divine consciousness and promoting spiritual growth.

Psychic and Spiritual Development: Regular practice of the Middle Pillar Ritual can stimulate psychic faculties, potentially leading to experiences of heightened intuition, spiritual visions, or other metaphysical phenomena.

Manifestation and Transformation: By harnessing and circulating divine energy, practitioners can use the Middle Pillar Ritual as a powerful tool for personal transformation and the manifestation of their will. This practice allows individuals to become active participants in their spiritual evolution.

I will introduce "The Middle Pillar Ritual" as Israel Regardie initially taught it and later updated by Chic Cicero. I will then add the Archangels to the basic Middle Pillar Ritual, and lastly, I'll add some variations that I have learned from other authors, such as David Rankine and John Michael Greer. Finally, I'll explain how I practice The Middle Pillar and Lightning Flash Rituals.

I have practiced "The Middle Pillar Ritual" and my variations for over 45 years and have gained some insights that may aid your practice. However, ultimately you will most likely modify the ritual according to your own experiences, which is how it should be. As a co-founder of a Hermetic Qabalistic Order, I've observed that most of us have the best results by starting with the basic rituals as taught historically, such as the Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram and The Middle Pillar Ritual, and after many months of practice, begin adapting the rituals as needed based upon your results and insights.

The Middle Pillar Ritual - Part One

KETHER Visualize a point of light like a star. Inhale and visualize a stream of light descending to your Crown forming a white circle of 8 inches. Breathe in and on the out-breath, vibrate EHIEH (pronounced Eh-heh-yeh). Repeat 3 times.

DAATH With the next in-breath, bring the stream of light down to the throat center and visualize a soft gray circle of 8 inches. Breathe in and on the out-breath vibrate YHVH ELOHIM (pronounced Yah-Way Eh-Low-Himm). Repeat 3 times.

TIPHERETH With the next in-breath, bring the stream of light down to the heart center and visualize a bright yellow circle of 8 inches. Breathe in and on the out-breath, vibrate YAHWEH ELOAH VA-DAATH (pronounced Yah-Way Elo-Ah Va-Da-Ath). Repeat 3 times.

YESOD With the next in-breath, bring the stream of light down to the groin center and visualize a purple circle of 8 inches. Breathe in and on the out-breath vibrate SHADDAI EL CHAI (pronounced Shad-I-El-Chi). Repeat 3 times.

MALKUTH With the next in-breath, bring the stream of light down to your feet and visualize an earth-colored circle of 8 inches. Breathe in and on the out-breath, vibrate ADONAI HA ARETZ (pronounced Ad-Do-Na-I Ha Are-Rets). Repeat 3 times.

Circulation of Light

Side to Side: Begin to circulate the light around your auric field, down the left side, and up the right. Repeat 3 times.

Front to Back: Now circulate the light up your back and down your front. Repeat 3 times.

Shower of Light: Pull the energy up from your feet (Malkuth) to the top of your head (Kether), and now visualize a fountain of energy flowing down all around you. Repeat 3 times.

Ascending Spiral: Visualize the light spiraling around the outside of your body from Malkuth to Kether. Repeat 3 times.

Cross your arms right over left on your chest and chant the Divine Name that you are most devoted to 3 or more times until you feel a Divine Presence.

The Middle Pillar Ritual - Part Two

My Middle Pillar Practices

KETHER

In the Sefer Yetzirah - Aryeh Kaplan's translation, he says: "The Sefirot are the means through which God communicates with His creation. They are also the means through which man communicates with God." He goes on to say: "One should not in any way worship the Sefirot or pray to them. One may, however, use them as a channel." For me, meditating on the symbols and energies of the Tree of Life stimulates reciprocal energy fields within me. If we use the tree to both ascend and descend and receive its polarities in harmony, it is always a great advance to our being. Invoking and then connecting to Kether is challenging at best. In her classic Mystical Qabalah, Dion Fortune states: "It (Kether) is the Primal Glory because no created being can attain to its essence." She says that Kether is the "Concealed of the Concealed." So, we will be dealing with an extreme abstract when we invoke Kether. But Kether is paramount for our intention of establishing the Tree of Life in our Aura.

Kether, often referred to as "The Crown," represents the first and highest emanation in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Within the context of the Middle Pillar Ritual, Kether is symbolically linked to the divine unity, the prima materia, the original point of emanation from the ultimate divine source. It serves as the initial spark of creation, reflecting the purity and totality of the Godhead. It stands as a silent reminder of the transcendental, signifying the beginning of the manifestation process and the birth of conscious awareness.

With these invocations, I visualize the Names of the Sephiroth, the Divine Names, and the Archangelic Names in Hebrew Letters. I engrave these Names in golden letters. For example, the Name of Kether is כתר

The ability to read Biblical Hebrew is strongly encouraged. Reading the consonants is good for visualization, as I just explained. But for chanting the Divine Names, you will need to be able the read the vowel markings below the consonants. In this document, I provide the phonetic pronunciations.

I start by focusing on Ain Soph, the Limitless Light that exists far beyond the sky. I try to understand Ain Soph as "The Source ." Following this, I call for the White Light of the Divine Spirit, stating: "May the White Light of the Divine Spirit descend."

Then, I picture a light beam descending to the Crown Center that is just above the middle of my head. This light forms a white circle, beginning as a small point and growing into a bright, 8-inch circle.

I breathe in deeply, and on the exhale, I chant the Divine Name Eheieh (pronounced Eh-heh-yeh) three times. While doing this, I visualize Eheieh as an Ancient bearded king seen in profile.

Now, I state: "Kether – The Crown." After spending some time feeling connected with Kether, I imagine the brilliance of Kether filling up my entire "body of light."

Next, I breathe in deeply and, on the exhale, I chant the Archangelic Name Metatron three times. As I chant, I picture Metatron as the Archangel signifying the Divine Presence, visualizing him as a radiant white archangel standing far above everything, representing the presence of God.

After this, I reinforce my mental image of the Light from Ain Soph connecting to my Kether Center and visualize the Kether Center as a dazzling white light.

Once again, I declare: "Kether – The Crown." I visualize the radiance of Kether filling my entire "body of light." כתר

DAATH

We now invoke the Hidden Sephira Daath to stimulate its reciprocal energy field within you. Interestingly, Regardie "borrowed" the divine name and archangelic names from Binah. No divine or archangelic name was assigned to Daath at the time of his writing. There was not even a planet or element assigned.

The Divine Name Ruach HaQadosh is now assigned to Daath and the Archangel Anphiel, thanks to David Rankine. Gareth Knight assigned a conjunction of the Divine Names Jehovah and Jehovah Elohim and the four Archangels of the Cardinal Points.

Daath, or "Knowledge," does not traditionally appear among the ten Sephiroth in most Qabalistic Tree of Life accounts. However, it holds a unique place in certain esoteric interpretations, where it is considered a hidden or "invisible" Sephira. Daath is often associated with the abyss or the vast gulf that separates the divine from the mundane. Its role in the Middle Pillar Ritual involves facilitating a deep spiritual awakening, acting as the repository of primordial wisdom and a bridge between conscious and unconscious realms.

I start by envisioning a beam of light flowing down from Kether to my Daath Center, which is located in the middle of my neck. This light forms a light gray circle, initially as a small point that gradually expands into a bright, 8-inch circle.

I take a deep breath, and, as I exhale, I chant the Divine Name Ruach HaQadosh (Roo-Ach Ha Koh-Dosh) three times. I think of Ruach HaQadosh as God, The Holy Spirit.

Now, I proclaim: "Daath – Knowledge." I understand Daath can also mean awareness and understanding. After a few moments spent connecting with Daath, I imagine its gray glow filling my entire "light body."

Next, I breathe in deeply and, as I exhale, I chant the Archangelic Name Anphiel three times. As I chant, I envision Anphiel as the Archangel of Knowledge, appearing as a bright dove gray archangel holding "The Book of Knowledge."

I then strengthen the image of the Light from Kether connecting to my Daath Center, visualizing the Daath Center as a bright gray light.

I announce once again: "Daath - Knowledge." I imagine the brilliance of Daath filling my entire "light body." דעת

TIPHERETH – BEAUTY

Tiphereth, or "Beauty," occupies the central position in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, connecting the upper and lower Sephiroth and symbolizing the spiritual heart of the practitioner. Tiphereth signifies harmony, balance, and spiritual illumination and is traditionally linked with the sun. Within the Middle Pillar Ritual, Tiphereth plays a crucial role as the point of perfect equilibrium, where human consciousness aligns with divine consciousness, facilitating transformative spiritual experiences.

I begin by envisioning a stream of light flowing from Kether and Daath to my Heart Center, which is located in the middle of my chest. This light forms a golden yellow circle, starting as a small point that gradually expands into a bright, 8-inch circle.

I take a deep breath, and as I breathe out, I chant the Divine Name Yahweh Eloah ve-Da'ath (יהוה אלוה ודעת) three times. I visualize a majestic king, a child, and a crucified God.

Now, I proclaim: "Tiphereth - Beauty." After spending a few moments connecting with Tiphereth, I envision its radiant golden yellow light filling my entire "Aura."

Next, I breathe in deeply, and as I breathe out, I chant the Archangelic Name, Michael, three times. As I chant, I envision Michael as the Archangel of Tiphereth and the Sun, appearing as a bright white, red, golden Archangel wielding a sword.

I then strengthen the image of the Light from Kether and Daath, which is now connected to my Heart Center; I envision the Tiphereth Center as a brilliant golden yellow light.

Lastly, I announce once again: "Tiphereth - Beauty." I envision the brilliance of Tiphereth filling my entire "Aura." תפארת

YESOD – FOUNDATION

Yesod, also known as "Foundation," corresponds to the ninth Sephira in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. It serves as the basis for all physical manifestations and is associated with the moon, dreams, and the unconscious. As a significant Sephira in the Middle Pillar Ritual, Yesod embodies the transmutative forces that link the spiritual with the material. It mediates between the human self and the divine, acting as a vehicle for accessing and integrating unconscious contents into conscious awareness.

I start by picturing a beam of light flowing down from my Kether, Daath, and Tiphereth Centers to my Yesod Center, which is located at the middle of my groin level. This light forms a purple circle, starting as a small point that gradually expands into a bright, 8-inch circle. I take a deep breath, and, as I breathe out, I chant the Divine Name Shaddai El Chai three times. I picture Shaddai El Chai as a beautiful naked man, very strong.

At this point, I proclaim: "Yesod – Foundation." After spending a few moments connecting with Yesod, I imagine its purple glow filling my entire "Aura."

Next, I breathe in deeply and, as I breathe out, I chant the Archangelic Name Gabriel (Gav-Ri-El) three times. As I chant, I picture Gabriel as the Archangel of Yesod and the element of Water. She appears as a bright blue and orange archangel holding lilies or a cup.

I then strengthen the image of the Light from Kether, Daath, and Tiphereth, which is now connected to my Yesod Center; I envision the Yesod Center as a brilliant purple light.

I announce once again: "Yesod– Foundation." I envision the brilliance of Yesod filling my entire "Aura." יסוד

MALKUTH - KINGDOM

Malkuth, referred to as "The Kingdom," is the final and tenth Sephira on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Representing the physical world, it is synonymous with the earthly realm and embodies the final point of divine manifestation. In the context of the Middle Pillar Ritual, Malkuth signifies the culmination of the practitioner's spiritual journey, the integration of the divine in the tangible world. It serves as a reminder of the immanent presence of the divine, underscoring the principle of 'as above, so below.'

I envision a stream of light flowing down from Kether, Daath, Tiphereth, and Yesod to my Malkuth Center, located between my feet. This light forms an earthy brown and light green circle, beginning as a small point and expanding into a bright, 8-inch circle.

I take a deep breath, and, as I breathe out, I chant the Divine Name Adonai Ha Aretz three times. I picture Adonai Ha Aretz as the Lord of Earth, taking the form of a young woman crowned, enthroned, and veiled.

At this point, I proclaim: "Malkuth – Kingdom." After spending a few moments connecting with Malkuth, I envision its radiant earthly glow filling my entire "Aura."

Next, I breathe in deeply and, as I breathe out, I chant the Archangelic Name Sandalphon three times. While chanting, I envision Sandalphon, the Archangel of Malkuth, as a very tall archangel dressed in a brown robe.

I then strengthen the image of the Light from Kether, Daath, and Yesod connected to my Malkuth Center between my feet.

I proclaim once again: "Malkuth– Kingdom." I envision the radiance of Malkuth filling my entire "Aura." מלכות

All the energy of the Tree of Life is now in Tiphereth. Sense this balanced energy. Visualize it as a large sphere of Golden Light within your chest.

Cross your arms right over left on your chest and chant the Divine Name you are most devoted to thrice or more until you feel a Divine Presence. Chant Yehoshua which is pronounced (Yeh-hesh-shoo-ah) or Yeshua (Jesus). You could also chant IAO (EE-Ah-Oh)

Expand the energy in Tiphereth Center into your full "Aura ." State: I am surrounded by the pure golden light of Jesus Christ; nothing but good shall come to me, nothing but good shall flow from me, I give thanks."

The Middle Pillar Ritual is designed to balance and activate the spiritual energies within the practitioner.

Its name originates from the middle pillar on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, symbolizing equilibrium, and the spiritual ascension pathway.

The primary intention of this ritual is to facilitate the invoking, balancing, and circulating of spiritual energy within the practitioner's aura, also referred to as the "subtle body" or "energy body."

COSTAIN'S contribution to Britain's first essential... export market

PROPORTION OF OVERSEAS WORK NOW 65%--GROUP'S WIDESPREAD RAMIFICATIONS

'Trading profits in 1958 are highest in Company's history...'

Sir Richard Costain, C.B.E., Chairman

THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING of Richard Costain Limited will be held on June 4 in London.

In the course of his circulated statement reviewing the year 1958, Sir Richard Costain, C.B.E. (chairman and joint managing director), said he was glad to he able to report that the group earnings for 1958, excluding Dolphin Square and allowing for pre-acquisition profits and minority interests in subsidiary companies, showed a satisfactory increase.

The sale of Dolphin Square had improved the liquid position of the group and the reinvestment of those funds would, in a year or so, add to the group earnings.

Sir Richard added: Taking these factors and the current prospects into account your Board have felt justified in recommending a final ordinary dividend of 10 per cent. making 15 per cent. in all for 1958 on the ordinary capital as increased by the 100 per cent, free bonus issue.

Reviewing the group's activities, the statement continued:

CONTRACTING

Our order book at the end of 1958 was approximately the same as at the end of 1957, but during the first months of this year there has been a substantial increase, particularly in Civil Engineering. The proportion of work carried out abroad has increased once more and is now about 65 per cent.

We have expanded our interests in Nigeria by the purchase of a controlling interest in Costain (West Africa) Ltd., where work in progress is at a high level and we are confident that this new nation with its thirty million people and great natural resources will have under self-government a stable and prosperous future.

SPECIALIST SERVICES

During the year we purchased the Share Capital of Piling and Construction Co. Ltd., a company specialising in bored piling, and in addition we formed a new Subsidiary Company. Foundation Engineering Ltd., from our existing department which deals with foundation problems. These two subsidiaries are complementary to each other and add to the volume of specialist work which is making an increasing contribution to Group earnings.

ABROAD

The Civil Engineering Division have commenced work on the £4m. boat harbour and jetty at Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf for the Iranian Oil Consortium. Operations have been started on the £4.5m. oil terminal at Khor-al-Amaya for a subsidiary of the Iraq Petroleum Company and recently we were awarded the £8m. breakwater at Escravos Bar, Nigeria, which is one of the largest civil engineering contracts awarded in the Commonwealth. We are associated with the American Company, Raymond International, in all three contracts. In Nigeria, Costain (West Africa) Ltd., continue to be heavily engaged in road work and bridges, some of which are in very difficult country. Our large contracts in Barbados and the Maldive Islands are progressing satisfactorily. The Rhodesian subsidiary is building the Salisbury headquarters of the Rhodesian Selection Trust, which will certainly be the most spectacular building in Central Africa, and is also engaged in several other important office buildings in Salisbury. In Iran we have completed the first major housing contract at Gach Saran and have on hand there further housing and an airfield; we also have housing contracts and a hospital in Abadan. We have recently been awarded a contract for the development of a £6m. township in Kuwait.

AT HOME

For various unrelated reasons our building operations in the United Kingdom were at a slightly lower level in 1958, but our order book is fuller than it was a year ago and enquiries are coming in at a higher rate. Among the major contracts completed during the year were the new buildings for the Royal Naval Engineering College near Plymouth, and an office block for the Legal and General Assurance at Kingswood in Surrey.

The Civil Engineering Division have completed the £1 1/2m. Beckton Outfall Diffused Air Plant for the L.C.C. and are fully engaged on the Maidstone By-pass, although last winter's weather retarded progress.

COSTAIN CONCRETE CO. LTD.

The company has had another satisfactory year and the prospects are promising for all products including railway sleepers and Stahlton floors. For some time this company has been investigating the Swedish lightweight concrete known as Siporex and we have now signed an agreement with Siporex Internationella AB giving us exclusive rights of manufacture in this country and options on several countries overseas This product has a high thermal insulating value, is made to precise measurement, is light, easy to handle, and quick to erect and it can be reinforced and used structurally as roof, floor and wall units. In some uses the cost ex-works is cheaper than existing materials and in the great majority of uses the erected cost is appreciably cheaper. We expect that this will make some contribution to the reduction of building costs in this country. The first factory near Glasgow is due to start production early in 1960.

HOUSING

In the United Kingdom 1958 was a good year and demand and availability of mortgage will probably increase turnover in 1959. The company has enough land for the present rate of building and, provided there is no change in the national housing policy, the outlook for the division should be promising.

FUTURE PROSPECTS

The trading profits for 1958 show a further increase, quite apart from the special capital profit made on the sale of Dolphin Square, and are the highest in the company's history. The widespread and varied nature of the Group's activities must be of great advantage in cushioning the effect of any recessions that may occur in any particular field of our operations.

It must be borne in mind that 65 per cent. of our business is carried out abroad, and a substantial proportion on the African continent and in the Middle East: in these areas many political changes are taking place which may reduce the amount of work that we earn out. Several years ago, owing to a political disturbance in a country abroad, work ceased completely on one of our contracts, several hundred employees were thrown out of work, and a considerable anticipated profit was lost; it is possible, but I hope not probable, that this could happen again. We feel, however, that these risks are warrantable not only from your company's point of view, but also in making a contribution to Britain's first essential--the Export Market.

Your Board feels that the prospects for 1959 can he viewed with confidence and, subject to unforeseen circumstances, the profits for that year should not be less than in 1958. We should benefit in the future from the Board's reinvestment policy, and from the long term view, I see no reason why the company's development should not continue as in the past, subject to the outside economic and political influences which must affect a business of our nature.

STAFF

We have with your approval, instituted the staff shareholding scheme. 90 per cent. of the shares (totalling 47,431) available to those who were eligible have been taken up and this initial success makes me more confident that this scheme will help to attract and retain the right personnel.

Hallelujah Mountains

•Location Information

oLocation: Pandora

oResidents: Mountain Banshee; Na’vi; Great Leonopteryx (possibly)

•Behind the Scenes:

oFirst Appearance: Avatar

The Hallelujah Mountains (Na’vi name: Ayram alusìng meaning “Floating Mountains”) are floating islands that circulate slowly in the magnetic currents like icebergs at sea, scraping against each other and the towering mesa-like mountains of the region. On Pandora, huge outcroppings of unobtanium rip loose from the surface and float in the magnetic vortices due to the Meissner Effect.

Physical Description

They are overgrown with foliage at the top and straggly beards of vines hang down beneath the mountains like the roots of air-ferns. Their sides are sheer cliffs. Waterfalls, originating on the mesa-like tops, stream down the sides and disperse into spray at the bottoms, like upside-down geysers. The mist then condenses on other floating mountains and flows over the side and disperses, renewing the process. The local peaks and mesas actually project above the level of the craggy undersides of the few floating mountains Jake Sully can see, so it seems obvious that collisions are inevitable.

It is also the place that Norm Spellman wants to visit the most on Pandora—his wish is fulfilled when Grace Augustine decides to move her avatar program operation to the region when she realizes Jake is being manipulated by Quaritch. Most human detection instruments are useless amidst the large magnetic fields. The mountains float like clouds among the fixed mountains and swirling cloud structures. When they are in clear sunlight they cast distinct shadows on the land below.

In Na’vi Culture

The mountains are home to several clans, including Ni’awve and the Tipani. The latter reside in the settlement of Vayaha Village. In 2154 the Omaticaya fled to the mountains, seeking sanctuary at the Tree of Souls. The tree is one of the most sacred sites on Pandora.

The Hallelujah Mountains are also where mountain banshees choose to roost. This location atop the 2,600m high Mons Veritatis makes the final challenge on the path to becoming a Na’vi hunter (known as Iknimaya) even more difficult and dangerous, as the route taken to the top of the mountains is treacherous. One wrong move will send a candidate plummeting to his or her death. The danger of wild mountain banshees is also present. The local Tipani also refer to the entire region around their village as Iknimaya.

Behind the Scenes

The mountains also bear a similar appearance to the Chinese Huang Shan Mountains. James Cameron said that it was the Huang Shan mountains that inspired him to create the Hallelujah Mountains, which would explain the similar appearance. On January 25, 2010 in China, hundreds of locals in ethnic Tujia costumes “officially” renamed the Qiankunzhu mountains after the Hallelujah Mountains as a tribute to Avatar.

Sacred Sites

The Hallelujah Mountains: Fragile Giants

For humans, the Hallelujah Mountains are a stunning vista, a true wonder of the natural world. For the Na’vi, they are so much more.

It’s hard to imagine. And trust us: pictures don’t do it justice.

Whole mountains lifted from the earth like children’s balloons. Billions of tons of rock floating in the air as though hung there deliberately—some the size of boulders, and some miles across. The Hallelujah Mountains are one of the definitive natural wonders of Pandora, objects of surreal delight for every human lucky enough to see them.

As enduring as they are in both fact and imagination, the truth is that the mountains perform a delicate balancing act within the region’s geology and ecology. Most significantly, they represent a cherished, essential part of Na’vi spiritual life. From their role in the iknimaya to the mysteries of Eywa herself, the mountains are a prime sacred site, offering a fascinating glimpse into indigenous belief.

But first, an answer to the question you’re all thinking.

Yes, They Really Float. But How?

Admittedly, it took some digging for RDA geologists to figure it out—literally. The intense magnetic fields covering Pandora—and clustering in this region in particular—were common knowledge during early exploration of the moon, and it was assumed they had something to do with how the mountains stayed in place. But it wasn’t until unobtanium was excavated that a full picture started to come together.

What we know is that, thanks to the superconductive properties of the unobtanium deposits within, each mountain is surrounded by its own magnetic field that effectively keeps the mass in place, as though fenced in. And conforming to the rules of a fence, the mountains can actually shift position within their boundaries—their occasional collisions inspired the Na’vi to nickname them “Thundering Mountains.”

The Eywa Theory

The alternate point of view belongs to the Na’vi. There is nothing unsolved in the Na’vi ontology: everything that exists does so within the system of interconnectedness controlled by Eywa. And by Na’vi accounts, the mountains were lifted as a part of Eywa’s plan. This puts things lightly; really, the Na’vi regard the mountains as one of the greatest symbols of Eywa’s organizing abilities. As we know, it’s extremely unlikely for a mountain to float. Isn’t the fact that these do prove that a higher power made it so?

One natural condition that gives the “sacred plan” idea credence is the interplay between life on the ground and life on the mountains, and how, depending how you look at it, the mountains almost need to be floating in order to sustain this interplay. Which brings us to one interplay in particular, which has risen to mythic levels on Pandora: that of the mainland Na’vi with the mountain banshee.

A Deadly Rite of Passage

A defining characteristic of the Na’vi is the ability to form neural links with some of the animal life of Pandora. And there is no bond more central to clan life—or that more captures the Na’vi imagination—than the one forged with the mountain banshee.

But this bond has to be earned. And that means a dangerous rite of passage called the iknimaya. When a young Omatikaya Na’vi comes of age, he or she may choose to make a long and treacherous solo climb up the vines connecting the floating mountains to the banshee rookeries found in the high peaks. There, the heart of the challenge begins. A banshee never relents to Na’vi bonding advances without resistance, and so the Na’vi only gets one chance; it will end either in free-fall or the banshee leaving its mountain habitat to nest near its rider, who now wears the title Ikran Makto—“Banshee Rider.”

Seeing the Mountains All Over Again

Obviously, the best way to feel the monumental power of the Hallelujah Mountains (and the other ranges of floating mountains on Pandora, such as the one hovering over the Mo’ara Valley) is to see them in person, in the way that the power of the Grand Canyon or the gorges of the Yangtze River can only be experienced when you’re really there. Like the Grand Canyon, the mountains are picturesque, often the first thing people think of when they think of Pandoran landscape. We love to look at the mountains—but to really see them, and all that they signify, you have to put them in perspective. Imagine if the Grand Canyon, in addition to being beautiful, defined how you entered into adulthood, in effect giving you your identity among friends and family. Imagine if the Grand Canyon represented an emblem of a spiritual force guiding every gesture of every day of your life—that its very existence was a spectacular visual proof of that force and its will. Do this, and you will have the briefest glimpse of what the mountains mean to the Na’vi, deeply and personally, and why we must do what we can to understand, respect, and celebrate them. When you consider the wonders of our two explored galaxies, they are literally irreplaceable.

Rather, it delves into the creation of solutions for problems that face us. It requires creative minds to deliver this.”

Coding is but one component of a computer science program. It also includes data and analysis, algorithms and programming, as well as social interactions and ethics that focus on the impact of computing.

Computer science is an integral part of Future Ready Iowa, a statewide initiative that is working to get 70 percent of Iowa’s workforce to be certified in high-demand jobs or college educated by 2025. That’s up from 58 percent today. Though the goal may seem lofty, it is necessary if the state wants to stay competitive in attracting good-paying jobs.

A 38-member Computer Science Leadership Team has been working on creating professional development tied to the computer science standards to be given to the Area Education Agencies (AEAs) for roll out. The group, which consists of a cross-section of Iowans from educators to AEAs to private industry, hopes to have the professional development ready by this fall.

Gov't orders immediate shutdown of chemical plant amid strong protest in NE China

2011-08-14 16:45:34

DALIAN, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in northeastern Chinese city of Dalian on Sunday ordered a chemical plant be "immediately" shut down amid a large-scale protest demanding the plant's relocation over pollution concerns.

The authorities also pledged to relocate the controversial Fujia Chemical Plant, the municipal committee of the Communist Party and the government said in a statement.

The government action was prompted by a protest involving over 12,000 of the city's residents that has been going on since Sunday morning.

The city's Communist Party of China (CPC) chief Tang Jun and mayor Li Wancai previously tried to appease the crowd by promising to move the plant out, but protesters demanded a clear timetable for relocation. Some of the protesters refused to move until a timetable was established.

The plant is a producer of paraxylene (PX), a carcinogenic petrochemical used to create raw materials for the production of polyester film and fabrics. Calls to relocate the plant mounted this week after large waves whipped up by tropical storm Muifa breached a dike near the plant.

Residents are concerned that a potential flood could damage the plant and cause it to release toxic chemicals. Enditem

BCD have been circulating the jigsaws cut by its late member Martin Norgate and this is one of them. Martin was known to create puzzles with unique mental challenges and think outside the box with his cutting schemes.

The 'Piece of Jarlsberg' jigsaw is a 4-layer 3D-enhanced jigsaw - and just as in the cheese the holes do not neatly line up. This is the description given by the BCD member who assembled the jigsaw:

"... On spreading out the pieces you immediately see a fair number of irregularly-shaped glossy pieces and a much larger number of dull beige ones, so it's a start to put the glossy ones together and hope everthing else will fall into place. However two of them have other pieces stuck underneath so you realise there must be more than one layer and further examination shows beige pieces stuck together, so perhaps three layers in all? More helpfully some pieces have rounded red edges which means they must be part of the rind. At this point you can separate them and begin to seriously do the puzzle. After many attempts you are able to construct an outline of the cheese and realise there are four layers. It is important to complete the bottom layer before going on to the next. Martin has exploited the fact that Jarlsberg cheese is full of holes and cut most of the pieces with false rounded edges. The holes don't even line up between layers."

That looks like a jigsaw I'll have to try to borrow!
