I don't think this is Mahjong, it looked more like Xiangqi, the Chinese chess game.

An outdoor chess game with a giant board and pieces at Place d'Armes in Montreal in July 1978.

The background of the photograph shows the building of the Head office of the Bank of Montreal. The building, a Montreal landmark, was built in 1847. The building is on Saint Jacques Street.

In close proximity to the giant chess board is the base of the Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve Monument. The monument was designed by Louis-Philippe Hébert and unveiled in 1895.

The base of the monument shows the smaller statues of Jeanne Mance and Lambert Closse.

The use of a giant board for outdoor chess in Montreal has been reported in a variety of locations over the years, although not always with the same chess pieces. The locations include Berri Square and the Place Émilie-Gamelin, the starting point of the nightly student protests and marches, which began in April 2012.

Living Chess Game. Queen Elizabeth (Ann Alford) crosses swords with Capt. Grace O'Malley (Robin Flanagan). New York Renaissance Faire - 2006.

Rick's shot. The interior of Henry II's Dover Castle was restored in 2007–2009. I expect everything here is a replica, as it was accessible to the public, but the elaborate ivory and ebony piece designs I'm sure are authentic. There were a few differences from the modern game in moves and board setup (in particular, note that the board could be in either orientation and the queen could be on either color).

Cairdeas (new short film)

This is the final television work the late Mick Lally starred in.

Friendship, a chess game, some things never end. Short drama directed by Kevin Glynn & Rónán Ó Conghaile starring Mick Lally – this drama was written with Mick Lally in mind and was his last television work. The story started as an idea by Frank Reck and a script was written by Kevin Glynn. It deals with two friends, easy in each others company who meet every day to play chess in their local pub played by the late Mick Lally and Eamonn Draper.

These men are still boys in their own minds, continuing a game that repeats every day. They hardly need to speak to each other. They are at ease with their lives. Joe Greaney plays the barman with ease and John O'Dowd plays the priest. The final scene where Mick Lally raises a glass to death is a fitting 'goodbye'.

Whilst still a tender 17 years of age, I was, in a Dickensian way, the recipient of a once-in-a-lifetime good fortune. I was invited by my mother's sister to accompany her family to Oxford, England, for an entire year. In the days leading up to moving to our new English digs, we visited the Canary Islands, Spain, France, Switzerland, and Germany. I am now bringing my slides--representing the fresh eyes of a young American--to the light of flickr, so we all can remember what Europe looked like in 1972. If anyone can identify these photos in particular, I would appreciate it very much. Enjoy!
