During the night, locals drive by to take a gander at the cruise ship, look at lights on the Ohio River, launch a boat, or go night fishing.

As the vehicle that had so thoughtlessly parked nearby got ready to leave its headlights provided some beautiful fill light, better than I could have designed on my own. Another example of an annoyance turning into a happy result. More photos from the same evening. NB11584

After several trips to Iceland, i feel i have now properly seen the Northern lights. A very special experience!

Going back through my archives and came across this. I was initially disappointed in this shot because it was very cloudy and drizzly on this day in such a way that the incredible Millau Viaduct didn't look as impressive as it truly is. It absolutely dwarfs the surrounding Tarn River valley, which is no little feat. Decided I might as well keep up with the recent bridges/viaducts theme and post it for some year end closure. Used a 3 minute exposure with B+W 6-stop ND filter to get sufficient streaking in the clouds. I wish I could have got a better angle on the valley for perspective but my options were limited. Requisite gobsmacking numbers: bridge deck is 240 meters above ground level, length: 2,500 meters (approx. 1.5 miles). The deck is only the 12th highest, but the tallest "mast" is 343 meters, making it the tallest bridge in the world.

Took a long and rather tricky road trip to get here, and I almost got stranded in my little Peugeot rental at one point where I followed GPS instructions and turned down a road in the dark wee hours, that turned out not to be a road. A 3-point turn very nearly landed me in a ditch.

CCJulyVersatile moody tones: atmosphere

At first I struggled to understand this month's challenge of moody tones for Flickr's Compositionally Challenged group. "Atmosphere" was the specific challenge as a type of moody tone. What does "atmosphere" mean? Does that mean open blue sky?!? Spaciousness? Photographing atmospheric star trails in the night sky could be fun. Then I thought, no, it is a figurative atmosphere, a tone. And then I thought, what is that? "Oh," I realized. Any atmosphere. Any mood. Any tone. "Stretch yourself."

Okay, a packed crowd it is!

[Technique: These are building lights, cars passing on Main Street, and street lamps of a small town at night. I have my camera intentionally out of focus and a long exposure so I can pan up as I snap the shot handheld.]

"But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?

It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.

Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,

Who is already sick and pale with grief

That thou, her maid, art far more fair than she."

Happy Valentines Day everyone :)

Traffic Light trails taken on a Bridge over M50 ring road around Dublin at Sandyford, Dublin, Ireland

This was taken towards the West where the Sun g had set.

The Railings on Bridges over the M50 are high. I used my Manfrotto 190 Tripod which extends to a height of around two meters and can reach above the Railings.

This is my first Light Trail, it is looking down on my local Dual Carriageway A27 at Shoreham by Sea.

Evening twilight on Broad Street.

I started the exposure, then Luke and I drove down and back thru the curves, and ended the exposure when we got back to the viewpoint; during which time Patrick/Immortal Thrill-Seeker and Jenna/Little Caper took pictures of their own and watched the cameras. Moon, clouds, and car lights all came together this night, it was great to finally get the night shot I've wanted/hoped for here. And a special thank you to Amancay, whose January 2008 night shot of the same location got me started doing and looking for opportunities for such shots. Enjoy the midnight moonlight, view large on dark gray. N16578&82 - Happy Moonlight Motoring Mondays!
