Our tour was guided by the son of the owner of the general store/souvenir shop in Mogollon, the only people we encountered in town. There were falling down buildings and open unfenced pits reaching down halfway to hades. We did cautiously enter the mill building for this shot.
Thought this derelict old building was an old warehouse, nope it was an old Police Station. For "52 in 2016" Challenge no. 23: Derelict.
yesterday's drive down highway 247/aka barstow road was to check on some old buildings i've been shooting for many years.
the pink dairy barn in lucerne valley was one. it is really in bad shape. all the back part of the barn has been on the ground for quite a while.
i wanted to shoot inside the little pink building part but a couple of large dogs and music coming from the inside gave me pause.
squatters.
i stayed in the car.
it seems to me if you are going to squat someplace, it behooves you to take care of the place and not haul in more garbage and junk. the goal is to make a place livable, even if you don't own it, right?
i'm just waiting for it to burn to the ground
but whatever, i digress.

This was tough to shoot and process. Although it would have been better to shoot this in the morning, this is one of those unexpected finds I frequently encounter while driving around eastern Kansas. I couldn't shoot this school head on, because the sun would have been directly in the lens, so I had to stand to the side a bit, thereby ensuring some distortion in the school. It was a little tough separating all the tree branches from the sky so that I could add some detail to it, and I decided that keeping the lens flares and shaft of light across the face of the school would add to the image.
