Circle B Bar Reserve, Lakeland, FL. It was a foggy and overcast morning at the reserve today.

Martinez Regional Shoreline, Martinez, CA. Photo taken from Pickleweed Trail.

Ed & James came down from Nashville to shoot him with me.

We waded into the middle of the swamp/pond to get the best angle. This shot was without the 1.4x because we were too close!

الواق الكبير

The classic Bittern pose. This bird was photographed from the Meare Heath hide at Shapwick Heath on the Somerset Levels. I guess that a lot of the attention this year was taken up with the Great White Egret breeding success, well the Bittern is another success and clearly Natural England , RSPB, SWT and the other wildlife agencies are getting things just right on the Somerset Levels

Fish meal #2. It caught four during the time I was shooting it.

Taken at RSPB Mismere. I spent an hour and a half watching this Bittern getting closer and closer to the Island Mere Hide. It was regularly catching things to eat. My first ever photos of a Bittern.

American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) at Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge

You just never know what you're going to come across during a Saturday morning walk. This was only the third time I have sighted one of our most reclusive of birds.

Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), Great Fen, Cambridgeshire. March 15, 2024.

Re-uploaded without location data. Apologies to everyone who's faved or commented on these previously.

Circle B Ranch gave us one of our funnest days. This guy was hunting for crayfish and gave us a few neat photo opportunities.

American Bittern (1 of 3). Dune Road, 27 January 2013.

Finally spotted the American Bittern which has been sneaking around the marshes at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens for a few weeks. I heard a rustle and there he was, about 20 feet off of the end of the boardwalk. I looked down to tinker with a camera setting and POOF! he was gone.

Taken at Minsmere Suffolk

from the new island hide.

Botaurus stellaris

Sc name: Ixobrychus sinensis

Lucky shot here, the sunlight was beautiful on his body, and he was doing a delicate balance on the frail looking water plant. And he was clever to grab a few stems at one time to stay atop

2 Bitterns in 2 days! Pretty exciting! Both were very cooperative, but then again, they both played it cool with their camouflage as they do, acting like they are a reed...then both snuck away, giving up thinking they were invisible, although they were pretty well invisible! Makes it even sweeter!

American Bittern Fluffing up after dipping in the water to catch food, Kent WA

Crazy pose!

For a rare, not to mentioned shy and well camoflaged bird, this guy almost seemed to be oblivious to me and a half a dozen elated spectators ten feet away for about a half hour!

Only in Florida!

Taken at the Myakka River State Park in Sarasota, FL.

Saw this little guy in the South Pond in Lincoln Park. Thanks to IBET for the alert.
