I strongly (convince myself to) believe that professional photographers should take some time to play every now and then. We played around all the time when we where amateurs and that's what made us good enough to go pro anyway. So to become a better pro, I try to allow some time to play in my tight schedule.

A few months ago I got into a conversation between some like minded photographers and we decided to do some kind of fun shoot together. I actually didn't have the time but I went anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I came back with more energy and motivation.

I had my lensbaby for a while but never really got to play with it.

Shooting families isn't always easy. Different characters, looks, clothes and sometimes clashing ego's. None of these problems on this shoot. This was one of those shoots that I realise that I'm so lucky that I can do this for a living.

My son Kobe and his friend Louise told me they were going to get married. So we did a small engagement shoot. Don't take these pictures to serieus. Five minutes in the studio with one light and 2 minutes in Lightroom was all I had before they wanted to play in the garden.

BELGIUM - Vilvoorde

After we finished the 'Running in 2020' pictures, we were joined by pro model Sylvianne. We improvised and had a lot of fun. This picture was shot in front a small tunnel under the highway.

LIGHTING INFO:

The soft main light is provided by the ambient light on this overcast grey day. A Vivitar with a black straw grid was placed behind the model as a hair light.

We did this series of pictures in an old factory near Aalst. I'm not used to shooting strobist-style so this can hopefully get you over your fear to just try it & be amazed by the results you can get using only 1 off-camera flash.

Today I was in Antwerp to pay a visit to Mike Larson who was giving a workshop for Calumet. While Tom, Bert & me where there we got a Profoto 7B pack from Calumet to play around with. We hijacked Mike's model to add at least 1 good looking person to these shots :-)

He is a real chimpmaster, after every shot he checks his screen for inpurities and then adjusts and takes another shot.

I was asked to give a demonstration about the way I work with off-camera flash on an event for the Belgian Federation of Professional Photographers. I gave a presentation for 20 minutes together with my buddy and wedding photographer Pieter Van Impe. Later that day we did a 45 minute live shoot.

I wanted to show how I improvise with the model and the location, so I didn't prepare anything. It wasn 't easy to look for backgrounds, set up lights, make pics and at the same time explain what I was doing to 60 photographers. So it's not my best work but I hope I gave an idea of the endless possibilities of small flashes.

2007 may 5, Zaventem (Belgium), School party

Every year this school (Zavo) organises a big party/show starring all the kids and teachers and staff. This year the theme was 'the wrong party', meaning that they used music, costumes etc. that you should like if you want to be in fashion.

Steenokkerzeel, BELGIUM

Now the new studio is getting pretty close to being finished (at least the top floor), I wanted to test out a bit what kind of picture I can take in the space. So I asked the wonderful model Ine to pose for a couple of hours. Everything was lit with flash, no available light.

The guys from Canon asked me if I could do some workshops at the Canon Eos Discovery Days. It was a bit weird for me to do this in front of such a huge and diverse audience in a really short time but it was big fun and I met tons of great people.

For those who couldn't be there or didn't understand my very special interpretation of the French language, I decided to try to replicate my workshop on my blog. 3 new posts are coming up.

LIGHTING INFO

I guess most people know me from my off-camera flash stuff, but I wanted to share some tricks for down-and-dirty work with the flash ON the camera. Because sometimes that's the only possible solution. You probably won't make masterpieces but you may just as well to try to squeeze the most out of it.

I tried showing some techniques by a series of 3 photographs. This is the first one with the camera in P-mode and letting all those clever Japanese inside do the work.

These engineers make sure that there's enough light on Erika but I don't share their idea of esthetics. It's just an unflattering flat picture. Check out the photoset to see how I tried to make it better.

Now that I have a nice big studio, I might as well learn how to take pictures in it. I find it much more difficult than shooting on location. That's why I'm doing a series of test shoots to try stuff out. The fantastic Kailyka helped me out on this one.

LIGHTING INFO:

I know I move my lights around a lot in function of the mood, the story and the model's features. That's why I figured to keep it rather simple in the studio. This one is made with one Elinchrom Ranger head in a large beautydish right in front and over the model. On the floor (in front of the model) is a silver California Sunbounce Mini reflector to bounce some light from the dish back. A Lumopro LP 120 speedlight (triggered by optical slave) is lying on the floor to light the brick wall.

Lotte got a photoshoot as a present for her birthday. The friends and Lotte's bf, came along. I had a lot of fun shooting them. It was a dull gray fall day, but we managed to get a more sunny feeling in most of the pics.

LIGHTING INFO:

By placing the subject about a meter under a rood, the available soft light became more directional and I used it as a main light. Because the background (a stone wall) was a bit too dark I placed a Vivitar 285HV next to it. It was at camera right, pointing down towards the left bottom corner of the picture. To create a pattern on the wall, I let the light come through some branches. A blue gel was added to create a bit more contrasting colours between subject and background. Triggered with PW's, flash was at 1/16.

I just got myself a Peleng, that's an 8mm russian fisheye lens. It's full manual and a bit awkward to use but I allready saw some stunning shots made with it. This is not the kind of lens that will sit on my camera for a whole wedding but I hope I will be able to create a few original shots with it.

I doesn't happen very often but sometimes it feels like you know someone pretty well without ever meeting each other. Veerle is Belgian but lives with her husband and their adorable daughter in California. I've been reading her blog about their American adventures for ages and Veerle was one of the first readers of my blog.

On their recent visit to our country I finally had the pleasure to meet Veerle, Sven and Nina for a photo session and a nice chat. I really hope I can visit them in the US one day.

TECHNICAL INFO

When shooting babies, it's often best to keep the lighting simple. We used a single Vivitar 285HV in a lastolite softbox to camera right.

Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.

I have replaced my backup camera (that was stolen) with a 1Ds mkII. Because I never worked intensively with this camera befor, I took it on holliday to get used to it and play around.

We were shooting portraits in our mobile studio at a corporate event when we had to take a break because Eddy Wally was performing. Might as well grab a few pictures of this legend.

Eddy Wally aka "the Voice of Europe" has been a phenomenon for many decades in Belgium. He's often seen as a wacko guy who sings corny songs but anyone who can make a crowd go wild after singing one word, deserves respect. I think Eddy is Rock 'n Roll and wanted to shoot him like the rockstar he is.
