The incredibly fun wedding of Sara en Kristof

I used to shoot quite a lot of weddings but these days I limit myself to 10 weddings a year. I would be better off shooting a corporate or commercial assignment on those days but I just love shooting fun weddings too much to stop doing it.

For the portraits we went to a nice windmill that was once the home of the hero on the legendary Belgian tv-show "kapitein Zeppos". I love couples who don't mind doing a pretty long steep and windy climb just to make some pics.

A series of images about how I build up a groupshot outdoors at night, combining flash with a long shutterspeed to get enough ambient light in.

To fix the composition I took a third speedlight (with an orange gel) and placed it on the light that was not working. I quickly shot another testshot from the hip (from the place the light was) to check the place and power of the flash. I adjusted it a bit untill it was similar to the light on the other side of the building.

I was asked to give a demonstration about the way I work with off-camera flash on an event for the Belgian Federation of Professional Photographers. I gave a presentation for 20 minutes together with my buddy and wedding photographer Pieter Van Impe. Later that day we did a 45 minute live shoot.

I wanted to show how I improvise with the model and the location, so I didn't prepare anything. It wasn 't easy to look for backgrounds, set up lights, make pics and at the same time explain what I was doing to 60 photographers. So it's not my best work but I hope I gave an idea of the endless possibilities of small flashes.

Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.

I have replaced my backup camera (that was stolen) with a 1Ds mkII. Because I never worked intensively with this camera befor, I took it on holliday to get used to it and play around.

Just a snap from the family holiday in France. As a professional photographer it's tempting to lug around all that gear on holiday but I find it important to step away from photography from time to time and just focus on my family. I only took 400 images in two weeks and mostly just with my small digicam (and a waterproof housing).

Me and Noa in the pool. As you can see, she's not entirely sure that being in the water is fun.

My son Kobe is a real soccer freak. In his first year at a soccer team, it was basically just 10 kids chaotically running for the ball. But now (second year) they really start to play soccer.

It sure is fun to watch them play. I don't bring my camera very often but because last time was so long ago, I took some pictures last Saturday.

Tonight I was one of the few fortunate people who got to play with a beta version of the new Canon EOS 5D mkII

I only held it for like two minutes but that was enough to be really impressed. It feels and handles well and it's amazing how little noise you get with such a megapixel packed sensor at high resolution.

I shot some HD video's at high iso's and they look just amazing. Too bad I'm not allowed to share them yet.

Because this is a beta camera there's no software that can handle the RAW-files, that's why I shot this picture in jpeg. This pictures was shot at iso 3200.

This is how it looks straight out of the camera.

I'm very impressed with this camera, thanks Canon.

Lately I have been busier than a supermodel who sells her body for 1 dollar/hour. There have been lots of exciting assignments, some future plans and lots of time and energy are put in the new house/studio.

Here's a little update on the studio:

This is a view from the first floor towards the ground floor. The walls on the left and right will disappear to create one big open space. It's hard to show you the real size of this place because it goes on under the place I was standing to shoot this pic.

Sven aka Ponette is my best friend and the godfather of my youngest daughter. We don't need to see each other very often to have complete trust and have great fun.

This time we took Sven and his g/f Marijke to the market in Brussels. Going somewhere with Sven is always a bit like watching Crocodile Dundee in New York. And going to the market was like a 5 hour exotic vacation.

Back at our place we relaxed a bit after all that walking on the market.

My little niece is getting big ... and married. She has become a beautiful woman but I still see her as that funny little kid (otherwise I'd start feeling old). We did a quick engagement shoot in my back yard and a couple of shots in the studio.

Now that I have a nice big studio, I might as well learn how to take pictures in it. I find it much more difficult than shooting on location. That's why I'm doing a series of test shoots to try stuff out. The fantastic Kailyka helped me out on this one.

LIGHTING INFO:

I know I move my lights around a lot in function of the mood, the story and the model's features. That's why I figured to keep it rather simple in the studio. This one is made with one Elinchrom Ranger head in a medium Chimera softbox to camera left. To get a touch of light in the background for separation, I aimed a Lumopro LP 120 on very low power to the floor behind the model.

One of the reasons I bought my studio is as an alternative location if the Belgium weather doesn't coöperate. Time to see if I can keep working in my usual style when shooting kids in the studio.

A group of calanetics ethousiasts asked me to shoot some pics at their annual bbq as a surprise for their teacher. I'm afraid I wasn't the surprise she expected ;-)

The master of the house was (except for me) the only male at the party. He wanted a picture of his new BMW bike. His harem gathered around him.

LIGHTING INFO:

I underexposed the background to make it more dramatic. A single Vivitar 285HV to camera left, lights the group.

I put a CTO (orange) gel in front of the flash and set my white balance to tungsten. That setting shifts the whole color spectrum. It makes the sky much more blue and neutralises the orange gel so the subject is neutrally lit. No photoshop, just lightroom.

My son Kobe sometimes doesn't get the attention I'd like to give him. So once in while we take some time to do something fun with jus the guys

Kobe had been talking about fishing, so I asked one of my best friends Sven (aka Ponette) to take us fishing.

We spent the afternoon at a creek but didn't catch anything. But we took enough food for a nice bbq on the beach anyway. Sleeping in a tent on the beach was quite an adventure for Kobe. The three of us really enjoyed it.
