Tonight I was one of the few fortunate people who got to play with a beta version of the new Canon EOS 5D mkII

I only held it for like two minutes but that was enough to be really impressed. It feels and handles well and it's amazing how little noise you get with such a megapixel packed sensor at high resolution.

I shot some HD video's at high iso's and they look just amazing. Too bad I'm not allowed to share them yet.

Because this is a beta camera there's no software that can handle the RAW-files, that's why I shot this picture in jpeg. This pictures was shot at iso 3200.

This is how it looks straight out of the camera.

I'm very impressed with this camera, thanks Canon.

We did this series of pictures in an old factory near Aalst. I'm not used to shooting strobist-style so this can hopefully get you over your fear to just try it & be amazed by the results you can get using only 1 off-camera flash.

The guys from Canon asked me if I could do some workshops at the Canon Eos Discovery Days. It was a bit weird for me to do this in front of such a huge and diverse audience in a really short time but it was big fun and I met tons of great people.

For those who couldn't be there or didn't understand my very special interpretation of the French language, I decided to try to replicate my workshop on my blog. 3 new posts are coming up.

LIGHTING INFO

I guess most people know me from my off-camera flash stuff, but I wanted to share some tricks for down-and-dirty work with the flash ON the camera. Because sometimes that's the only possible solution. You probably won't make masterpieces but you may just as well to try to squeeze the most out of it.

I tried showing some techniques by a series of 3 photographs. I did the first one with the camera in P-mode and letting all those clever Japanese inside do the work. The picture didn't turn out particulary well, so I switched to Manual mode for the second picture. In these kind of situations I always look for light in the background to get more depth and separation between the subject and the background. I lowered the shutterspeed and increased the ISO to let more available light in. The flash does the rest.

The last step was to create an off-camera light source without getting the flash off the camera. Many people know the technique to bounce flash onto the ceiling but never take it a step further while there so much other stuff you can bounce the light on and gain more control over your lighting. I picked somebody with a white-ish shirt/sweater out of the audience to stand on my left side, so I could bounce the flash on his/her clothes. My message is that there's often uncoventional lighting equipment to be found just about anywhere.

Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.

I have replaced my backup camera (that was stolen) with a 1Ds mkII. Because I never worked intensively with this camera befor, I took it on holliday to get used to it and play around.

I've always been the kind of person who likes to do the opposite of what a sain person would do. So what do I do on a very windy, rainy, cold day with low and uninteresting light, yup, I go outside. Model Kaatje was a trooper in that bad weather.

I was seriously considering not doing weddings anymore next year, in fact the decision was made. But some amazing weddings this year made me recall that decision. Bart and Marleen are two fantastic people who trusted my vision and skills completely and are amongst some other couples that pushed me to go on.

Next year I'm going to do a limited amount of weddings and I'm going to do it my way. I'll focus on quality instead of quantity. I won't guarantee to capture every little moment any more but I will guarantee that I'll capture the mood of the day in less but better pictures.

A few years ago I made a video of Ann's 18th birthday party. Ann and her parents went throught some really though times during the last years. To celebrate that everything is going well again they threw another party. Ann and her friens might be handicapped but boy do they know how to party.

I photographed this party to thank those great kids and their supporting families for one of the best parties I've ever been to.

No well paid commercial job or drop dead gorgeous model shoot can compeed with this. This is what really counts.

Sven aka Ponette is my best friend and the godfather of my youngest daughter. We don't need to see each other very often to have complete trust and have great fun.

This time we took Sven and his g/f Marijke to the market in Brussels. Going somewhere with Sven is always a bit like watching Crocodile Dundee in New York. And going to the market was like a 5 hour exotic vacation.

I got my new scanner (the Epson V700) and I did some quick test scans of some Hasselblad negatives to see how it performs against my old crappy scanner. It really blew me away and then I'm sure that with some experience you can certainly get even more out of the scanner.

This is a 100% crop of a negative scanned at 2400 dpi, not bad hey?

Did some postprocessing on it, mostly cleaning up the scan and some minor burning and dodging.

ISO 400, 1/60th, f/4, SB600 at 1/16 power in Ezybox softbox. In hindsight, the softbox was spilling too much light on the background and a snoot (or smaller softbox) might have worked better.

My son Kobe sometimes doesn't get the attention I'd like to give him. So once in while we take some time to do something fun with jus the guys

Kobe had been talking about fishing, so I asked one of my best friends Sven (aka Ponette) to take us fishing.

We spent the afternoon at a creek but didn't catch anything. But we took enough food for a nice bbq on the beach anyway. Sleeping in a tent on the beach was quite an adventure for Kobe. The three of us really enjoyed it.

Waking up on the beach and then taking an early morning walk is just great.

After the Strobist Seminar in Paris we were hungry for more Strobist facts. Bert Stephani, Pieter Van Impe, Didier Jouret and me went on a Strobist trip in Vilvoorde, Belgium.

Without the help of the fantastic models Dirk Hesse and Sylviane Alliet this day wouldn't have been possible!

After a busy week with two workshops it was time for a break. Kobe and Maya are always up for some adventure. Noa stayed with her grandparents while we went for a canoe trip on 'the kleine nete'. Good weather and great fun.

Lighting Info:

The portrait session of this wedding was interupted by the rain, so we sheltered in a hallway of a public building nearby. No need to waste time by waiting for the sun to come out again. So I set up a single SB24 on a lightstand with a small translucent umbrella to camera left. Trigered by pocketwizards.

Oh man, I love my portable lighting gear. It allows me to pull something off in any situation, even a dark hallway.

I strongly (convince myself to) believe that professional photographers should take some time to play every now and then. We played around all the time when we where amateurs and that's what made us good enough to go pro anyway. So to become a better pro, I try to allow some time to play in my tight schedule.

A few months ago I got into a conversation between some like minded photographers and we decided to do some kind of fun shoot together. I actually didn't have the time but I went anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I came back with more energy and motivation.

That 25 EUR plastic Holga camera has a hotshoe so for my second test roll of film I wanted to see if I could trigger my Hensel Expert Pro monolights with it. Seems to work just fine although it might be a bit weird to use top notch Hensel equipment with the extremely low end Holga.
